There was once a 5-year-old little girl. She was a sweet, quirky thing, well-behaved and sensitive,…read moreactive and adventurous. She loved lizards, bugs, horses, and drawing more than anything. Her mom and dad were so excited for this little girl to start school, to see all she'd learn, and to learn all she'd become. However, the hopes and dreams these parents had for their little girl would not come to pass. After a short time in kindergarten, the little girl started getting poor conduct grades for "not paying attention. The school set up the first conference and began to tell the parents how wrong their little girl was. The girl began coming home upset, stressed out, scared to go back, and claiming that her teacher hates her. The parents tried ADHD meds for the child. In 6 months, the little girl was on 4 different medicines. Upon taking the first dose, she was listless, glassy-eyed, and had sobbing episodes. She didn't enjoy the critters and the horses and the drawing. The smiles went away. And she did no better in school. This precious little girl is Emma, and she is mine. In December 2014, we started at ABC Montessori. Their love for children, interest in fostering the individuality of the children, and in the development of the child's brain are immediately evident. The passion they have for the Montessori method is inspiring. They have restored our daughter's motivation and joy for learning. Today, our daughter seeks answers. She explores. She is respectful. And she absolutely loves her school. There, she is a helper, a friend, a great student, loved and praised by her teachers, and extremely well-behaved. She sits down to her work daily and focuses on what needs to be done. She completes book reports and science fair projects. She knows things about culture and history. She reads "chapter books" and she has straight A's!! She laughs and plays and does not want to be picked up at the end of the day. I have my little girl back!! For all of this I am thankful for the Montessori method. But even more so, I am eternally grateful for the careful, thoughtful planning, attention, and intuition of the ABC Montessori staff, and for their concern and care for the whole child. My daughter WILL be successful. In fact, she already is!

He is a very creative child who thrives on stimulation and exploration, something we felt his current daycare was not providing. That's what led us to seek alternative options, and Montessori programs came highly recommended for children like him. Our first experience with Carlisle Montessori was very positive. We were warmly welcomed, and the tour left a great impression. We loved the homelike atmosphere, and the small size of the school gave us the feeling of a "family setting" where children could receive more individualized attention. Our only concern at that time was the small size of the classrooms in relation to the number of students. Despite that, we felt optimistic and moved forward with the enrollment process. We completed the application paperwork and were met with excitement and openness. Then came the enrollment form, where we were asked to disclose any learning, behavioral, or emotional diagnoses. We shared our son's diagnosis and emphasized that it had not resulted in any disruptive behaviors, something confirmed by his current daycare, where he's been for two years without any issues. We simply wanted an environment that could better support and engage him. After sharing this information, we noticed a clear shift in the school's tone. We began receiving phone calls with questions that felt more like attempts to determine whether our child would be a "problem" for their setup. We answered these as honestly as possible and reassured the school that, as his parents, we would not place him in an environment we didn't feel was the right fit. They asked to speak with his current teacher, and we agreed. His teacher reinforced everything we had said, sharing her positive experience and highlighting his strengths. The school then scheduled a 30-minute meet-and-greet, saying it would be the final step before enrollment. However, that visit turned out to be a very negative experience. The feedback we received focused almost entirely on the school's concerns, with no effort made to recognize or discuss our child's strengths. They then requested a second, two-hour observation to reassess whether he would be a "challenge" to their environment. At that point, we decided to withdraw our application. Throughout this process, the tone and messaging consistently emphasized how the school didn't want to enroll a child who might be disruptive, instead of showing curiosity, empathy, or a willingness to understand and support who he is. This left us with a very painful impression that our son's differences were being used as reasons to exclude him, rather than as opportunities to meet a unique child where he is and help him grow. Had they taken the time to really engage with him, it would have been obvious how joyful, social, and curious he is. Sadly, we came away feeling that the school is not equipped, either in tools, staffing, or mindset--to support children with diverse needs. The overall expectation seems to be that every child must adapt to a one-size-fits-all model, which is exactly what we were trying to move away from in the first place. This review is not intended as backlash, but rather as a message to help other families. If you're a parent of a child with diverse learning or developmental needs, we hope this helps you avoid the same disappointment and emotional strain that we experienced.

We started off with our little girl when she was 18 months as we felt this school was a lot better comparatively. That truly has been the case and we started learning around the Montessori concept. The Montessori track is new to both of us and honestly speaking we have got cold feet around it a couple of times during the journey. However, Ms.Gina and the team gave us clarity on how the Montessori program brings the BEST OUT IN CHILDREN and assured us to trust the program. She even showed us examples of students who were then graduating and their educational, behavior levels. We decided to continue with the program and we are now huge fans of the Montessori program! As our little one is now graduating in 2023, we are even continuing our little one's education with a Montessori program into the next level program - Lower Elementary (and maybe more!). Ms. Gina and team are true believers & followers of MONTESSORI principles. The concepts are so clearly taught with real world materials that the foundation is strong, which we all know matters a lot. Apart from teaching the kids around educational concepts (Reading, Writing, Maths etc.), the other aspects are also well taken care of - This includes social interactions, behavior & manners, show and tell, leadership, mentoring and helping others, arts and crafts and everything else! We were planning on homeschooling but I still wanted our kids to start with some school environment experience. Smyrna Montessori School was everything we were looking for. My children get lots of individual attention, are encouraged to explore and learn as much as they want and have had some wonderful friendships develop. There is a strong sense of respect modeled through kindness towards the teachers, classmates, learning materials and the world (cultures, the environment). The teachers love my children like they were their own and are passionate about the Montessori style of learning. Both of my children have gained a lot of confidence and independence since they began there. If I ever have a question I can set up a time to talk with any teacher. I'm always impressed with how aware they are of everything my child deals with on a daily basis, what their strengths are, how much progress they have made in areas of behavior, character and learning. I do wish they extended beyond the Primary program (3-6 years). I don't think there is any problem with illness any different than any other school environment. I don't love that the lead toddler teacher spot has changed hands a few times, but I understand that when a teacher has a baby she will want to take time to be with her new baby. This has been the only reason for teachers leaving that I am aware of. Those teachers have stayed in contact with the school and return for visits when possible. We feel very fortunate to be at Smyrna Montessori School and are so happy it opened at the perfect time for our kids. And as far as safety goes, our children are referred to as precious gifts, children are not allowed out of the classroom unless a teacher or parent is with them and the school and yard are secured during the day. I have no concern for my children's safety at all. Montessori is a different approach to learning than what a lot of people are used to, but for us it has been perfect. Oh, and I LOVE that I get an email and photos every week from each of my kids teachers touching on what the kids are working on and enjoying and some explanation about the Montessori process.
