Philadelphia Roll
Audrey I.

For the price, I really can't complain about Katsumi Sushi. I paid $10.75 for a Philadelphia roll (salmon, avocado, and cream cheese) which is a steal considering it's location and fare. Typically, I see Phillie rolls go for 13 and above in Berkeley, so it's a nice change of pace to see something below that price caliber. Do note that their Phillie roll has a scant amount of salmon accompanied by huge globs of cream cheese, so I imagine this is how they keep their rolls so affordable. From what I could tell by the meager portion of salmon, the quality of the raw fish is actually pretty fresh-not overly fishy or slimy. The rolls are pretty decent, though don't expect a generous portion of raw fish with your rolls. The quality's just a notch above Safeway sushi which is by no means a compliment. But, again, you're not coming to this restaurant for its outstanding merit or luxury. This is made known by the lack of interior decor with its only decoration being its humble sign outside the establishment. Katsumi Sushi is truly a no-frills sushi establishment that does cheap sushi. granted, it does it quite well.

Bento Box Special
Austin H.

Needed a quick meal that would fill me up so decided to try the Bento Box special from Katsumi Sushi. Ordered over Snackpass and everything was ready within 5 minutes, which was convenient and quite surprising considering the amount of things they include. The Bento Box Special comes with rice, salad, miso soup, 4 california roll pieces, chicken teriyaki, and 4 gyozas. The teriyaki chicken, was a little on the smaller side in terms of portion but still grilled well and maintained their juices. The california rolls were not really special and weren't super great in quality. Gyozas were fried to perfection and were quite good. If you want a fast meal that will fill you up, definitely get the Bento Box Special. The quality isn't anything out of this world but the meal gets the job done. Will come back to try some of their sushi rolls. Hopefully they are really good.

Inside Seating Area

Solid spot for nearby students in the Berkeley area. I love Katsumi for their affordable options, as well as being able to go to them late in the night as they are open fairly late compared to nearby restaurants. While the food itself may not necessarily be the most traditional Japanese food, nor of any Nobu-esque quality, you get what you pay for, and a great value at that. For about $10-12 I can get a full bento box that leaves me full and satisfied. Their poke is also solid, and priced at a great point. Most of all, Katsumi punches well above their weight in terms of hospitality and service, and I have never been let down on this end from them. Highly recommend if you are looking for a casual bite of Japanese comfort food near the UC Berkeley campus area.

This place is the comfort food place of all comfort food places. Whenever I'm feeling sad or need a pick-me-up, I know that Katsumi will never disappoint. I always order either the California Roll or the Crunch California (fried CR with unagi sauce) and it's always delicious. It comes with ginger and wasabi, and the uncle working there is so nice. He's always friendly, smiles, and had the food out in a heartbeat. While you can't eat inside (it's in Asian Ghetto), there's ample space outside. If you go to Berkeley and haven't been here you have to becuase it's by far the BEST sushi spot at Berkeley :)

Small portion but the food was okay. There are so many better places around so I don't recommend this place.

Baked Scallop Sushi and Raider's Sushi

First time at this place. We did not plan to eat sushi but since a lot places did not offer dine-in, we decided to try this place. We ordered 3 sushi rolls, salmon teriyaki and udon. The wait time was not long and most important, all the sushi we ordered were so delicious. The owner and staffs are friendly. I will come back to try other sushi.

Oregon Roll
Audrey S.

Ordered on Snackpass ahead of time and about 10-15 mins later my sushi was ready for pick up. It was just what I wanted and needed to fill me up so yeah I'd come back again and grab take out here! I got the Oregon roll, which was simple but fantastic.!

Honestly the food here is very mediocre, but if you ever need quantity, this is the place to get it. I ordered the bento box special, which is less than $8 before tax. The quantity of food you get for that amount of money in Berkeley is amazing. It's not just a lunch special, you can get it for dinner too! It comes with rice, chicken teriyaki, 4 California roll pieces, salad, gyoza, miso soup, and an orange slice. Everything tasted pretty standard, but the miso soup was one of the worst I've ever had-- very bland. Taste wise, I'd give this place a 3, but having this amazing bento box deal bumps it up to a 4. The food comes out pretty quick too, if you're ever in need of a fast meal.

Salmon hand roll and Lion King roll.
Katherine B.

Great sushi spot! Their Lion King roll and Spicy Salmon Hand Roll were fantastic. The salmon was fresh and the Lion King had the right combination of sweetness and savory taste. I'd only ordered for pick-up, but the service was good anyway. Can seem pricy at first glance but very worth how filling and tasty their rolls are; probably my favorite sushi place near the Berkeley campus.

The restaurant was packed and seating is pretty limited, so I'd highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time. The atmosphere is lively and energetic with casual Japanese eatery vibes, and service was friendly throughout the meal. Everything felt creative, rich in flavor, and very texture-focused. Here are the highlights: * Ankimo Mousse (monkfish liver) with sweet potato chips - Made with truffle paste, capers, and chives. Absolutely delicious. The mousse was rich and savory but surprisingly fluffy in texture -- honestly a savory girl's dream. The sweet potato chips added just enough sweetness and a snap to balance the richness of the liver. 9/10 * Bluefin Tuna & Tsubugai Sashimi Nuta - Bluefin tuna, sea snail, broccolini, and fresh wakame tossed in a sweet Kyoto yuzu miso vinaigrette. Kind of like a sashimi-seaweed salad. I really liked the vinaigrette and especially the texture of the sea snail. I'm not sure all the ingredients fully came together cohesively, but it was still enjoyable overall. 7.5/10 * Yuba (house-made tofu skin with ikura and uni) - Served as single bites on spoons. SO good. You can really taste the difference between house-made tofu skin and store-bought. It's much more delicate, creamy, and tender, with a mild soybean flavor that balanced the richness of the uni and salmon roe beautifully. The textures in this bite were incredible. 9.5/10 * Iberico Pork Jowl Skewer with miso marinade - I honestly prefer pork jowl over pork belly. The fat and meat are more integrated instead of layered, so every bite is tender, juicy, and flavorful with just the right amount of chew. So good. 9/10 * Clam & Cilantro Ramen - I've never had a ramen broth quite like this. It was slightly creamy and deeply flavored from the clams, and the cilantro added a lot of depth and freshness. The noodles had a great texture too -- chewy and bouncy. Everything worked together perfectly. 9/10 * Uni Carbonara Pasta - Pasta with parmesan, uni, and ikura. They do not skimp on the uni or roe here. Super creamy and rich with bursts of saltiness from the ikura. The texture was great, but I honestly wished it had just a tiny bit more salt to really make all the flavors pop. It was almost there for me. 7.5/10 * Desserts - We tried two desserts, including the sweet potato brûlée. Both were delicious. One had a silky panna cotta-like texture, while the sweet potato brûlée was creamy, lightly sweet, and had the perfect crackly sugar top. 9/10 Overall, such a fun meal with a lot of unique dishes and flavor combinations. There are still so many things on the menu I want to try next time. I'll definitely be back.

The standouts were the corn tempura, the sushi and the beef okonomiyaki. The skewers were good but not great; I felt the pork belly was a tad salty, and some of the pieces of the beef were slightly overcooked + chewy. The black cod was flaky but I wish it was marinated a bit more with the miso for stronger flavor. I wish I did not order the spring roll or the foil wrapped salmon. The spring roll was soggy bc the filling inside was so damp and lacked seasoning & flavor. The salmon was very dry, but the mushrooms were flavorful and juicy. Definitely recommend reservations or be ready to wait at least 45 minutes. The inside is quite small, tables as well, so be ready to sit pretty close to your neighboring patrons. Very lively atmosphere that can get loud, but could also be fun!

Highly recommend the iyasare kakiage tempura, wish it had some less sweet potatoes and more of the other ingredients, but overall it was savory and very sweet from the sweet potatoes. I enjoyed the kara-age curry rice which is a japanese style fried chicken thighs in a tokyo style curry sauce, a small salad, and koshihikari rice. They gave sooooo much kara-age chicken and it was quite filling. Good dish to share with others. Lastly, we had to try the iyasare mentaiko pasta which is a spicy cod ros, spaghetti, ikura, shiso, and kaiware. It's quite heavy and creamy, but definitely worth trying if you like the ingredients!

The food itself was solid, with the best dishes being the Chef's Recommended tuna tartare and branzino. The rolls were fine, nothing out of the ordinary. While the dishes were enjoyable, the price was on the more expensive side. For the quality of the food ultimately it's difficult to say that it's entirely worth it. For a dinner for two, you're looking northward of $150 and while that's fairly common in the Bay, you can find better restaurants at that price point.

We were given the option of sitting at a table or at the bar, but we chose to sit at a table. I ordered the Deluxe Spicy Tori Paitan which is their chicken option. The spice level was good, however besides the name, there was no other spice indicator for this menu item. The only item that had spice indicators was their spiciest option which had 3 flame symbols next to it. The spice was good and didn't mask the flavor of the ramen. The waitress came around a lot to refill water as needed. The restaurant is small, but the food is really good. I'd love to try their tonkotsu options next time. Parking is a bit difficult to get, especially in downtown Berkeley. You may have to find street parking a block or two down depending on the time you come to eat.

Rich, deeply garlicky broth that was bold and delicious. * Signature smoked toripaitan ramen - flavorful without being overly heavy (which I prefer).
