I had heard good things about Kat Khao since they opened a year ago. Reviews and photos looked good, and I was surprised to see full availability on a Friday night. We came as a group of 5 and were seated at an oval table in the back of the restaurant. It seemed like there was only one server for the entire restaurant. The service was extremely slow. We ordered the stuffed chicken wings, scallop crudo, crab garlic noodles, waygu sando, and unshaken beef. The food was very good. Loved the crudo, chicken wing, waygu sando, fried eggplant... everything was delicious, The service was a shame. Not only was it very slow, but the server was so nonchalant and didn't seem to care we were waiting around forever with no attention. We probably won't be back. I hope they solve the service issues because the kitchen is working hard.

Tried the wagyu pho and the garlic crab pasta and both dishes were really good!! I like the vibes and the food here. The only weird thing is that they didn't have any diet coke... so I had to order a cocktail since it's byob. Other than that, I really enjoyed the food and will definitely be back to try more dishes. I have never heard of Vietnamese Japanese fusion but you know that it kinda works

Overall: A // 5 stars Went back for a round two this time ordering pick up from Uber Eats, which I found to be just as good without a quality tax for takeout. The team clearly has mastery of their entire menu with intentional flavor profiles that truly elevate classic Vietnamese favorites. The price is well worth this rare trait to find. (Crab Garlic Noodles: A) - Love the garlic-heavy flavor profile that brings a classic comfort elevated by naturally sweet crab. (Spring Rolls: A+) - Free on Uber Eats with a minimum purchase, I was really impressed by the mastery of this snack. It's colorful, bright, and vibrant with understanding of the ingredients -- using carrot ribbons for a light crunch, avocado for some buttery comfort, and green mango for a subtle sweetness and crunch. Well, well, well. Look who rolled into downtown Jersey City with glammed up Southeast Asian-Japanese fusion fare. What is this, Manhattan? But for serious, Kat Khao would not be out of place as the newest trendy dinner spot in Soho or Lower East Side or even Tribeca. It delivers on all counts, right down to the Manhattan price points. But who's watching dollars when lemongrass is involved? - Beef Tataki: Juicy and zesty with yuzu, herbs, peanuts, and chili peppers - Hokkaido Scallop Crudo: Very tasty with creamy coconut milk-based sauce - Chicken Banh Mi Sando: The Hokkaido milk bread is a nice twist - Chilean Sea Bass Chả Cá: A bit bland. I'd skip - Unshaken Beef: Not bad, but not as juicy as traditional Loc Lac - Crab Garlic Noodle: Creamy and tasty - Chicken Katsu Noodle Salad: Just okay. If you're torn on a noodle dish, don't get this one In sum, more hits than misses. Pricers are higher than your corner pho spot, but the dishes are more creative too. Plus, date night ambience. For drinky drinks, try the Hanoi Gimlet for zesty non-alcohol or the Hojicha Sunrise for an earthy tea flavor.

A very modern take on Vietnamese - Japanese food. My friends and I came for restaurant week and had a good time. A reservation is highly recommended. Our appetizers looked great and tasted fantastic. The pho had a bunch of meat in it but it came out kinda cold. My friends got the crab garlic noodles and felt like it was a bit too salty. The dessert was mid. The matcha flan was okay and the tiramisu was dry. The service was a bit slow with only two servers for all the tables. I'd definitely come back when they get their liquor license because the mocktails they did have looked great.

Tried out this place during restaurant week over the summer for the first time and was genuinely impressed. Haven't been to a place that checked all the boxes in a while - flavorful, presented nicely, compact menu but still good variety, and affordable price points. Food was amazing. Katsu sandwich was amazing, great flavor in the chicken and toppings and a pretty big portion to share. Pho is good, comforting bowl of hot soup can't really go wrong. Crab pasta was overflowing with crab. Service was always quick and friendly, water cup was never empty! The restaurant has a chill vibe, a little industrial with the concrete but decorated nicely. There's a few tables, you can make a reservation but we've always been able to get a table for 2 with minimal wait.

They have like no choices on there menu. Everything we got was mediocre. Very overpriced place and no alcohol. Service was just alright. The place is very dark so its hard to see the ambience

Such a surprise to find such flavors in Jersey City! The chicken katsu noodle salad came with purple sweet potato noodles and the chewiness goes really well with the chicken cutlet, veggies and spices. The crispy eggplant is one of my favorites, it's sooo crispy! We weren't super impressed with the pho and sandos but they were delicious anyways. It's definitely more of a casual and cozy vibe that's great for a weekday comfort dinner. Service is great. The restaurant doesn't serve alcohol but we enjoyed all the mocktails just as much! Everything was above expectation and we'll definitely come back.

Kat Khao has been on my list for a while and so happy I stopped by on a Friday evening! My friend and I decided to share smaller plates over a bigger entree to have a bigger variety. We started with the Beef Tataki and the Scallop Crudo. The Beef Tataki was great, a little heavy on the onion but nothing extraordinary. The Hokkaido Scallop Crudo was a little fishy, probably not the freshest, but can be concealed with a heap of the zesty coconut milk-based sauce. We then had the Filet Mignon Bahn Mi Sando and Teba Gyoza Stuffed Wings - The Sando was a fun fusion of japanese meat sando with pickled vietnamese veggies. The stuffed wings were a nice treat, think a crispy savory chicken wing married a spring roll. All in all, would love to come back to try the other dishes. No cocktails, but maybe this is something they are working on as they do have a giant bar.

Steak tataki was phenomenal! Scallop crudo was fine so if you're in between the two take the steak tataki. The beef was very tender and had excellent flavor. The scallops were fine but needed some acidity and the scallops were not as fresh as they could be I'd say. The waygu pho did not have very good broth flavor or spice -- no anise, cinnamon, bay leaf etc. The meat was VERY good. They clearly use premium cuts of meats here and it shows. It definitely carried the dish. The noodles were great, springy and al dente, did not fall apart. We also got the garlic crab noodles. Noodles cooked well, flavor pretty good but overly salted. DEFINITELY get the matcha flan it was amazing and so unique! Staff was very attentive and extremely polite. Cute modern interior with low lights and not too noisy. If they made some really small modifications to some of the food this place will top notch. Would definitely come back and I hope it does well.

This was our first time here and it blew me away! This is some of the highest quality food in Jersey city, so tasty and such a creative combination of flavors. The unshaken beef was perfectly seasoned and so so so tender as was the potato. I felt like I was at a high end steakhouse. The scallop crudo was also amazing, so fresh and the flavor of the coconut milk sauce complemented the scallop perfectly. My partner got the garlic crab noodle dish and also loved it, and the flavors were great. Don't sleep on this place! This will be our new spot to bring friends from the city or out of town. Next time we may also try the pho and their gyoza stuffed chicken wings.

I've taken a lot of friends here over the course of 10 years, and without fail, every one of them has walked out mindblown--and why wouldn't they?! The wait times have gotten better over the years (probably because people are waiting for the restaurant next door), but the food and drinks here are still top-notch. Staff is always great, and they all work so efficiently. I am generally a fan of izakayas, but there are very few that offer plates that are designed to be shareable, and this is one of the reasons the food here is so enjoyable in a small group setting. I am obviously biased and think they can do no wrong, but some of my staples that have stood the test of time: Kimchi cream udon, avocado tofu salad, salmon sashimi tacos, and the kani cream croquettes. I was so excited when they opened an outpost in Flushing years ago, but sadly it shuttered during COVID. It is definitely small and there is always going to be a wait, so don't be those people who come in with a huge group during prime time because they like to move (getting customers in and out) very fast.

We walked into a cozy, intimate space that felt more like a traditional Japanese noodle shop than a large restaurant, with a warm, understated energy that kept the attention on the food. The dining room was modest and inviting, with a layout that accommodated a steady flow of customers, and the focus was clearly on the quality of the noodles and the care that went into each bowl. The udon was the highlight of the meal. The noodles had a thick, chewy texture that showed the difference between freshly made udon and typical packaged noodles, and the broth was flavorful without feeling too heavy, with a savory depth that paired well with the noodles. We ordered a few different bowls and found the shrimp tempura udon standing out, with the tender shrimp, crispy tempura coating, and rich broth coming together in a way that felt complete. The restaurant also offers different styles of udon, including hot and cold options, which gave us good variety depending on what we were looking for. Beyond the udon, Raku has a selection of additional dishes that complement the meal. The menu keeps the focus on Japanese comfort food, and the smaller dishes made it easy to add something extra without taking away from the main bowl. We appreciated that the restaurant does not overcomplicate the food and instead focuses on getting the fundamentals right. The dining experience is more relaxed and intimate, though the space is limited and can get busy during peak hours. Reservations are helpful, especially during popular dining times, and seating can feel a little tight because of the smaller layout. Despite the size, the atmosphere works well for enjoying a slower meal centered around a warm bowl of udon. The staff moved through the room with a quiet efficiency, and the pacing of the meal kept the experience smooth and unhurried. Overall, Raku is a great spot for anyone looking for high-quality udon in NYC. The handmade noodles, flavorful broths, and simple approach to Japanese comfort food make it stand out. It is the type of restaurant we would return to when craving a satisfying bowl of noodles rather than a more casual ramen-style meal.

We walked into a casual, no-frills space that felt similar to a classic tonkatsu restaurant in Japan, with a straightforward layout and a menu that stays focused on different cuts of pork, chicken katsu, fried seafood, and Japanese curry. The dining room had a practical, unpretentious energy with a steady flow of customers coming in for a comforting meal, and the open kitchen gave us a view of the frying process that added to the anticipation. The tonkatsu is the clear standout. We ordered a few options and found the breading light, crisp, and fried without feeling heavy or greasy, while the meat stayed tender and juicy inside. The Berkshire pork was a popular choice, with a richer flavor and extra tenderness compared to a standard pork cutlet, and the texture of the breading held up well against the sauce. Every meal came as a teishoku set with rice, miso soup, shredded cabbage, and pickles, making it feel like a complete and satisfying meal. The cabbage provided a refreshing contrast to the fried food, and the house tonkatsu sauce paired well with the crispy coating without overpowering the pork. The katsu curry was another excellent option, with the rich Japanese curry adding another layer of flavor while still letting the crisp texture of the cutlet stand out. Fried shrimp, oysters when in season, and other appetizers like takoyaki and agedashi tofu rounded out the menu, though the pork katsu remained the main reason to visit. The restaurant is consistently busy during lunch and dinner, so it was common to wait for a table during peak hours. Service was efficient once we were seated, and the food came out fairly quickly despite the crowds. Portion sizes were generous, making the prices feel reasonable considering the quality and amount of food. The staff moved through the room with a practiced rhythm, and the pacing of the meal kept the experience smooth without feeling rushed. Overall, Katsu-Hama is one of the strongest tonkatsu restaurants in New York City. The consistently crispy cutlets, quality ingredients, and traditional Japanese set meals make it an easy recommendation for anyone looking for authentic tonkatsu without unnecessary extras.
