We're back in Berlin for the last day of our vacation and staying at a hotel near the airport, so…read morewe took advantage of the locale and lovely weather to take a two-hour walk around just one segment of the lake (I think it would take an entire day to traverse the entire lakeside walk). This was my ninth visit to Berlin during a period of 36 years and I'd never before explored this part of the city (the very northwest corner). It was a really nice way to end our stay in Germany. There was something very special about the walk and also the surrounding neighborhood (re: the latter, there are lovely houses and a very peaceful/charming ambiance). Often overshadowed by larger, more well-known parks/lakes, Lietzensee is an accessible, charming,…read moreand soothing urban retreat, with a cafe on the north end, a walking/jogging/riding path around the entire lake, several play areas, and plenty of grass for sunbathing. The weeping willows and other trees lining the lake are particularly notable and, in the fall, quite stunning. Close to the ICC S-bahn and the Neuekantstrasse bus stops. If it's cold enough, it's a popular place to ice skate. When it's warmer, the grass in front of the monument on the east side (I forget the name) seems to be the accepted area for topless or "smaller-bottomed" sunbathing.
