I usually studied classical music, but D'Arcy works in different styles, so I also studied improvisation with her. She's always been flexible about my repertoire and she's really responsive to my needs. After I took D'Arcy's Musical Composition workshop, I was able to notate my own music and developed a deeper understanding and appreciation of piano literature. Because D'Arcy is a composer, she provides a very unique perspective in her teaching. Since studying with D'Arcy, I've gone on to play jazz, pop, blues and latin music. The strong musical background that D'Arcy provided me has helped me to go on to play professionally with various groups. I highly recommend taking Piano Lessons with D'Arcy! 5 stars!

D'Arcy's infectious enthusiasm for music and piano literature inspired my daughter, Ananda. D'Arcy…read morealways made sure that Ananda loved the music they played, giving her complete freedom to choose her repertoire. She played through many pieces for Ananda each time she was about to start a new piece, offering them to her like an international buffet. Ananda received a thorough training in theory, piano technique, music history, analysis, and piano literature in her lessons. During her high school years, Ananda took two piano lessons a week. High school students often stop taking piano lessons due to their increased workload, but she was able to meet Ananda's unique learning style and keep her inspired. Ananda studied with D'Arcy for six years, and continues to play on her own at college. As a parent and professional educational coach, I would highly recommend D'Arcy's piano lessons.

Watching her work with two kids six years apart has been the best possible demonstration of how good she is. With our older son, she came in and diagnosed in a single evaluation lesson what years of previous instruction had missed -- hand position, posture, his whole physical relationship to the instrument, and the fact that he had never been taught how to bring the character of a piece out. She was direct about it without being discouraging, and she had a plan before we left the room. That plan was thoughtful: Level 1 for technique to rebuild his foundation, but Level 3 for sight reading and Level 4 for theory, because she had correctly read where his actual strengths were. Six months in, he plays differently. There is real musicality now -- phrasing, dynamics, actual emotion -- where before there were just correct notes. The clearest sign it is working: he sits down and plays on his own at home, without being asked. With our six-year-old she is a completely different teacher, and that is the point. Shorter lessons, a pace suited to a beginner, and enormous patience. She meets each child exactly where they are and somehow gets both of them genuinely committed to the work. She is kind, warm, and understanding -- with the kids and with us as parents. She is also rigorous, and I mean that as the highest compliment. Every lesson comes with written assignments and specific instructions. She is clear that real progress takes five days a week of practice and says so up front rather than letting families drift. She steered us to a local music shop rather than letting us order poor-quality used books online, and made copies herself so our son wouldn't lose a week waiting on a shipment. She has been genuinely flexible with scheduling when life gets complicated. Our older son is now preparing for his Certificate of Merit evaluation -- something that was not remotely on the table before he started with her. If you are looking for a teacher who will build your child into a musician rather than just move them through books, at any age, Cristina is the one.

I returned to piano in my 40s after playing as a child, and one of the things I've loved most about learning from Rachel is the incredible range and flexibility she brings to teaching. Our lessons can follow wherever my curiosity happens to lead--jazz improvisation, classical technique, sight reading, nerding out on music theory, or taking on an ambitious piece that might take us months to learn. She is equally at home with all of it, and somehow always finds music and exercises that feel perfectly matched to what I'm interested in at the time. Rachel has created an environment where playing music is something I get to do, rather than something I'm supposed to do. I have a demanding job and young kids, so there are stretches when I practice a lot and stretches when my lesson is the only hour I spend at the piano all week. There is never guilt or judgment. We simply sit down, make music, and somehow always have a wonderful and productive lesson. Over the years, Rachel has made music a joyful and lasting part of my life.

Taking lessons with her again has been such a gift. Rachel is an absolutely incredible teacher. I have taken lessons with her both in person and remotely and they are equally excellent. She has an amazing ear and can instantly hear exactly where you are getting tripped up even over video. Her ability to pinpoint issues and explain them clearly makes learning feel approachable and motivating rather than intimidating. Beyond her technical skill, Rachel is just the best human. She truly cares about her students as people and always takes time to check in and connect. She encourages you to explore whatever styles of music you are passionate about. With her I played everything from classical to show tunes to jazz and I even took a brief detour into folk guitar. Her openness and enthusiasm make lessons fun personal and creatively fulfilling. She is also wonderful with kids and I genuinely cannot wait until my son is old enough to start lessons with her too. If you are thinking about taking lessons with Rachel do not hesitate. You will not regret it.

She only recommended Dr Umida after hearing one of her students performed. I think that says a lot about Dr Umida when the word comes from another piano teacher. We have been with Dr Umida since 3 years ago, and I see tremendous result in my sons' piano learning. Dr Umida is probably the most patient and encouraging teacher I have ever seen. She never showed the slightest frustration in any lesson, even when my sons did not put in enough effort at practice occasionally. She always encouraged them and helped them to come back on track. She also showed them different techniques of improving the songs. I am really impressed by how she can make the songs so much better with her unique way of teaching. Both my kids had won several competitions in the past few years and they enjoyed this piano journey very much. My older son has completed all the CM levels and no longer with Dr Umida since a few months ago. But I hear him plays his favorite songs almost every week at home.
