Weird experience. Stopped in to get dinner to try this place. It was a quiet atmosphere, maybe 1-2 other tables at a time seated out of maybe 15, everything was clean. We ordered the shrimp and cheese rolls, those were great, and then ordered our food. I got the beef massaman curry add chicken, my wife got the chicken pad Thai and added mixed vegetables. Our food came SUPER fast, like we shared the 3 shrimp rolls and our food was there. My wife said her food was bland, and I thought my food was very bland. The curry was flavorful, but thin, and the meats and veggies in the curry had been cooked (boiled maybe?) separately without any seasoning or flavor and dumped into the bowl and had the curry poured on top. The large chunks of potato didn't have nearly enough time to marinate, the beef tasted like nothing and was cooked in a way I couldn't clearly identify, and the chicken was too. After 10 minutes of eating, the food quality improved a lot. It had time to actually cook together in my bowl, and basically cooked properly 10 minutes after they served it to me. When I mentioned this to our server, I was told two things. 'The boos is cooking, and he's not very good. Also, we rush things out to keep up with our pace for carry out orders. We do almost all take out orders, we dont really have people dine in much. I would never order curry in, I would always get it to go, it is much better' What a wild thing to say. Might get to go from here, but if you don't care about people's dine in experience, then just close the dine in portion? Very confused. It's honestly disappointing because if we had ordered to go and it had cooked in the containers on the way home it probably would have been like a 7/10 or better. read more

Whenever we are up in this area, we try to make sure we visit Kanlaya. Despite it being a bit of a drive, we've also made special trips just to eat here. Everything about this restaurant is fantastic! It is unassuming from both the inside and outside, but the service, selection and food are all fantastic. With the number of visits we've made, I've tried a lot of different menu items. Some of my favorites are the shrimp cheese (shrimp and cream cheese in a wonton paper). I'm not sure if it is even remotely authentic, but I love the flavor combination and the crunch. My kids love the fried banana and their chicken satay is always perfection. Favorite entrees are the pineapple fried rice, pad thai and larb. All are large portions and packed with flavor. They always get the spice level right, too. I love this restaurant! Just wish it was a little closer so I could enjoy it more often. read more

Tom yum soup was good. The right amount of kafir lime. Also had panang curry which was less sweet than other ones I have had but still good. Heat scale is 0-4. Glad I got a 2. I like spicy but not so much you can't taste it. Friends had Thai basil which looked very good. Might try that next time. Thai iced tea with lime was very good, very sweet. Something different. It was a busy Friday evening. Our waitress, I didn't get her name, but she's a freshman at Duquesne. She was great. She was friendly and helpful, and despite being the only one waiting tables and checking out to go orders, she did a fantastic job. This was our 1st visit here and will not be our last. They have a ton of food options and appreciate there are pictures next to the name. The portions are large and are great for leftovers! I got the pad thai and it was alright. It was not saucy, which made it lack flavor. Personally, I think the thicker noodle dishes were better. I also got the thai tea and it was tasty. Less creamy and more milky, but worth the try! The place is clean and our server during lunch has been amazing! I have only gone in larger crowds, but I assume the food comes out even faster. I would recommend coming at least once, but I think there are some other options that would suffice. read more

I got takeout from here and unfortunately found the food to be rather disappointing. I ordered a wonton soup, pad see ew, and crab fried rice. The wonton soup did not taste like wonton soup at all. It had carrots and celery in it which I've never seen in a wonton soup before. The wontons themselves were tiny and not authentic at all. The pad see ew also suffered the same issue of not being authentic. Instead of Chinese broccoli, they made it with regular broccoli. Also, the noodles were much thinner than the wide flat noodles that pad see ew is supposed to be made with. The least bad thing I guess was the crab fried rice. The flavor was decent, but I couldn't find any actual crab meat in the rice. read more

I've had Thai food from many different places all over the country, but none of those other restaurants have flavor like Kanlaya does. If you are passing exit 38 or 39 on the PA Turnpike, do yourself a favor and take the five minute detour to Kanlaya, you won't regret it. If you like spicy food but actually want to enjoy it, get your spice level at a 2 or 3. My only complaint is that they never take the tails off of their shrimp. read more

We found ourselves in McCandles one afternoon, and we decided to check out Kanlaya after hearing their food is fantastic. We can during their lunch hour, so they didn't have their full menu, but their lunch options we awesome! We started with chicken spring rolls and Tum yum soups! The Tum yum had an awesome flavor to it, and was spiced perfectly (I got a level 4). The spring rolls were nice a crispy, and were the perfect thing to snack on before the main course. I got the Thai basil with chicken, which was served with a nice side of rice! It was a little oily, which I'm not sure is normal or not, but the flavor was delicious and tasted wonderful. My girlfriends mom got the pad see ew with chicken (drunken noodles) and she liked it as well! It wasn't the best Thai food we have had (or our favorite in the city), but this was a great spot for a quick lunch! read more

I'm giving a five star, because it really is very good, and I live in the New Castle PA Youngstown OH area. So this place is one I stop at whenever I'm down in that area, like near McNight rd in Pittsburgh, pick up a couple dishes for the wife and myself. I usually get the chicken larb. Always get the chicken pad Thai extra peanuts for wife. Spice level 3 of 5 is a barely warm heat. Really, it is pretty Americanized, but, is really close to Thai. I was in the Air Force. When I joined back in 1981, lot of my friends had Thai wives. So I know what good Thai is supposed to taste like. And this place is pretty darn close. Wish I had some pix of the food. The food is excellent in pleasant but not pretentious surroundings. The servers are very helpful and we have run them ragged getting us this and that throughout our meal. The Thai iced tea even earns a free refill! Don't miss the shrimp in a blanket, fried spring rolls, and fresh rolls. Their Tom kha and Tom yum soups are excellent. We repeatedly order vegetable drunken noodles (my favorite), the very similar pad see ew, larb, tamarind curry shrimp, and red curry shrimp. Did I mention that they cook the shrimp perfectly! I did not, however, care for their chicken wings. We haven't ordered their pad Thai because we are stuck on (=addicted to) the other dishes! I think we did have it a couple years ago, and it was excellent. But after discovering drunken noodles and larb and tamarind curry, we were launched into orbit! My husband and I ordered takeout from here on our way home from a hike at Hartwood Acres. This place has been on my radar for quite sometime but we just had not made it to this area to try it. We had the perfect opportunity over the weekend! I ordered the Pad Khing Sod as my entree and my husband and I shared the Tom Yum with chicken. My dish had a good ratio of chicken to vegetables and a nice amount of heat (I ordered a 2 out of 4). My favorite part of the dish was there were long thin pieces of ginger throughout the dish that added a pop of flavor with every bite. The rice was nice and fluffy and separated nicely when the sauce from the dish was added to it. The price for this meal was very reasonable for the amount of food I received in the dish. The soup was nothing like I've had before! There were mushrooms, chicken, fresh basil and fresh cilantro within the broth. I was not a huge fan of the mushrooms but everything else was delicious! There was so much depth to the spices along with the fresh herbs and a nice heat to it as well. Again, the price was very reasonable for the amount we received. I was pleased with my food and the price so I would not hesitate to return here and try another dish on their menu after another day at the park. read more

I called in an order on a Saturday evening. The food was ready when I arrived. The Tom Kha soup was delicious, perfectly balanced with lemongrass and coconut. I also ordered Pad Thai with tofu. I'll preface this review by stating that, for Pittsburgh Thai food, Kanlaya was pretty good. Since it was my first time trying their food, I opted for Pad Thai chicken. The portion was more than enough for one sitting. Kanlaya's Pad Thai does not have red bean curd or a whole lot of scallions, so it's basically noodles, egg, bean sprouts, and your protein. The dish contained crushed peanuts and the spiciness level--the restaurant does it on a scale on 1-4--was on point, as I ordered a 2 and my meal was definitely medium spicy. This restaurant is a little hidden gem in Allison park! I ordered some takeout chicken pad Thai and crispy veggie rolls and both were very delicious! I picked up on Saturday evening so it was definitely a little busy and they seems to be short staffed so I did end up waiting a little bit longer than the time they gave me to get my takeout order. But overall, worth the wait! They appear to be BYOB from the people I saw entering the restaurant. Portions were decent sizes and everything leaving the kitchen looked delicious! Really close to my house, so this is a go to spot for us. We've tried all the noodle dishes and fried rices all excellent. The crispy wontons are dynamite, fresh rolls are above average here, Tom Yum is spicy and sour and really good. The larb is excellent and one of my favorites, maybe with Calamansi juice, it's nice and tart. They seem to use a fermented whole chili product to add spice which is really delicious. The staff for carry out is very friendly and prompt. Restaurant is clean and quiet, but we always get carry out. My only gripe is no Nam Tok on the menu, you guys would kill that dish! read more

We have been looking forward to Kanlaya re-opening for dine-in because it's too long of a drive to get take-out home hot. Pre-pandemic, it was one of our faves and would have earned 4 or 5 stars. The good: the food! The food! It is the best Thai I've had since moving to Pittsburgh. Pad Thai, drunken noodles, all the curries. Just delicious. 5 stars for food! The bad: the service was just fine previously. Now, take-out has clearly taken precedence and if you dine in, prepare to wait and wait and wait ... and to have different members of your party eat at very different times. Also, and this feels strange to say, but the dining room has always had a "hushed library" feel to it. I can't put my finger on why, but both our group and other tables, every time we have gone, has conversed at barely whisper volume. I ended up ordering the crab rangoon and jungle curry. My wife and I also split the tom yum soup. I ordered my food at spice level 3 out of 4. It was not as spicy as I was hoping and the jungle curry was alright. My favorite part of the meal was the tom yum soup and crab rangoon. Tom yum soup was excellent and a nice combination of spicy and tangy. The crab rangoon was tasty and had a nice crunchy shell. I would come back here to try something else for an entree. I have driven past Kanlaya Thai Kitchen many times, and after my friend who lives in Hampton recommended the restaurant, I decided to try it out. Upon entering the restaurant, I saw that it was spacious and clean. An employee courteously greeted me, and I picked up a hard-copy menu to browse their appetizers, soups, entrees, sides, desserts, and beverages. This restaurant offers the typical curries, rices, noodles, and specialities, but I felt excited to taste them. I ordered a few items. The employee told me that my food would be ready for pickup in 20 minutes, and it was ready exactly on time. Here are my ratings for the individual foods: Crab rangoon - 4.5 stars - This fried wonton is filled with cream cheese, imitation crab, and scallions and is served with sweet-and-sour sauce on the side. The wontons were perfectly crispy, and I appreciated that the chef included imitation crab meat, because many other restaurants do not use meat at all. Green curry - 4.5 stars - I ordered my green curry with a spiciness level of 2/4 and with chicken. The chef used the right amount of curry to be a medium spiciness as I had requested. Other ingredients, of course, included coconut milk, bell peppers, eggplants, bamboo shoots, and basil. The curry was served with white rice on the side, and the rice was cooked perfectly. Unfortunately, because the curry was such a generous size, I ran out of rice, so I will have to cook more rice in my kitchen at home. Fried banana - 4.5 stars - Bananas were wrapped in spring roll skins and coconut skins and then fried. They were served with honey on the side. The chef packed several of them into my container, so the portions were generous. The spring roll skins were perfectly crunchy, and the bananas and honey were so sweet. Fried rice - 4.5 stars - I was not expecting to receive a large container of fried rice, but it was included in my takeout bag. The rice was cooked well, and it included chicken, eggs, peas, carrots, onions, and scallions. My husband ate this fried rice and enjoyed it. The total price including tax was $27. We were blessed to get an authentic Thai restaurant in our town! We have eaten at this fine establishment a dozen times and taken out a tasty meal much more than that. The food is custom made so you can have as little or as much spice as you want. I'm a diabetic, so it's possible to get some of the dishes made without sugar!!
