I know it's still odd to review a cemetery, but irrespective of what I do for a living - cemeteries are, more often than not, fascinating and beautiful (aesthetically) places to visit, and Kangarilla is no exception. Nestled deep in the hills near Clarendon, the drive there alone is awesome.
Kangarilla Cemetery is built on a long slope affording some wonderful views over the valley. It's surrounded by gum trees, which in turn have their fair share of wildlife. It was opened in 1875, with the first burial being that of John Hart in the same year. Before this, there were various small cemeteries attached to churches in both Kangarilla and Clarendon.
There are surprisingly over 1200 burial sites in this small cemetery, including ashes internments, and I've been privileged to perform a few of those in my role as a Celebrant.
Throughout South Australia, you'll find some amazing small cemeteries, each attached to a small town or homestead, and they're all worth a visit if you're passing. I use these as an excuse to rest if I'm on a long drive into the country or outback. The amount of local history that can be learned from these wonderful places is quite staggering - but of course only if you're into that sort of thing. I am - so will keep posting those that I find are 'Yelp-worthy'! read more
