Ate dinner here. The fish dish was the best dish of the evening. Fresh fish and great sauce. Can't remember what the name of the dish was, but... I need to brush up on my German, because they don't really have a menu in English. read more

Then you awake the next morning to a beautiful mist blanketing the surrounding mountains as well as the town. And then later that morning the mist breaks and the sunlight resumes its 'normal' routine. Yeah, that's this place. The breakfast selection is more than ample with yogurt (muesli, nuts, fruit, and other condiments) eggs made to order, juices, breads, spreads, cheeses, assortment of ham and salami, and tea and coffee. The property itself is rustic if not a bit dated, but what it lacks in modern appeal it sufficiently makes up for in breakfast, updated bathrooms and unbeatable ambience. And lastly, the owner is a charming lady who is more than happy to talk or just give advice on the surrounding area. If you're looking for an amazing view and an unbeatable charm, then this is your place. Just make sure you book a few nights and take advantage of this area's natural beauty.

Check-in was swift and friendly. My room is exactly as pictured, large king bed. Plenty of room in the bed and plenty of space in the room. A small area for seating, a desk and cabinet for clothes. There is a travel guide in the room and a hotel welcome in German and English. Let's just say, anything you need is listed - AND MORE. The bathroom is ... A bathroom. With blow dryer! Breakfast is moderately priced but well worth it. The array of selection is broad. 2 words - honey Comb. Try it. Love it. Dream about it. Breakfast dining is indoor and outdoor, with adoringly white tulips on each table. The wait staff knows your face and knows you. I asked for coffee once and the next morning, it magically appeared at my table. She remembered me and my room. Dinner was... heavenly. The specials are indeed special. I ate the vegetarian selection and the vegetables were plentiful and crisp, the süs Devine. My colleague had a steak, perfectly prepared, with a sauce laced onion into a ring, topped with delicate baby corn, and a hefty portion of pommes. I considered dessert before dinner... then I ate. I havent even left yet and am already planning a return. Bring your tennis racquet and prepare to relax!

My colleague and myself ordered entrees which were served with salads, amuse-bouche. They were almost too pretty to eat. These small samplings should have been an inkling to coming attractions, but we didnt take the hint. I ordered a vegetarian pasta, which was divine. The sauce was riddled with pesto and gloriously creamy without being heavy. My colleague's steak was perfectly prepared and toured with baby corn, housed in a sauce wrapped onion ring AND a side of fries. I can't say enough good things!

The Schwarzwald did not cooperate the day we drove through. The entire forest was shrouded in…read moreclouds that reduced our visibility to about a five-yard radius around the car. Because of this, the Mummelsee was only a sign indicating a parking lot that we managed to glimpse on the side of the road. Relieved to get off the road, we decided to stop here for our requisite Black Forest cake. Let me start by saying that this hotel is a very cozy place to relax if stuck in the Black Forest during bad weather. Even though the views were of nothing but white, the restaurant was very comfortable. However, do not eat here if you are in anything resembling a hurry. Lunch for three with dessert managed to eat up two hours of our day. I'm not sure how much of this is cultural and how much is the restaurant, but everyone here moves SLOOOOOWLY. When there is nothing better to do, it's not a big deal, but if we had actually had a day with good weather, I would have been very frustrated. That said, the food was worth stopping for. It is classic German cuisine done well. I was particularly thrilled to get schmalz and dark bread as a starter. Kid was very excited to eat spaetzle with gravy. "It's like noodles!" Husband and I ordered rather blindly, as the server didn't offer us a menu in English (which I saw later that they did have), and our guesses worked out well. It was an altogether pleasant meal topped off with a really outstanding Black Forest cake. If you need a place to stop just to check that particular item off of your tourist list, this is a great place to do it. Another good reason to stop is the excellent store below the restaurant. They have all sorts of Black Forest treats to take with you. We left with a BF ham, a kirchwasser salami, and a bottle of schnapps. Yum. So even if you never actually get to see the view, I would still recommend this as a stop on your Black Forest drive...who knows, the lake actually might be pretty, too!

Atmosphere: the restaurant has a very welcoming appearance. There is ample seating for various size parties. There is even a children's play area near the front of the cafe. The large windows/doors open onto a wonderful view of Mummelsee, though it was far too foggy the day we visited to see much of it. Staff: the waiter was attentive and ensured we had everything we needed. Unfortunately, one of our party received the wrong order, but the situation was resolved. Food: as we only had coffee and cake, I can only comment on that. It was thoroughly delicious. Please be aware that some of the desserts do have liqueur in them, so double check before ordering them as they may not be what you expect. Overall, this is a very nice cafe to stop at if you're traveling through the Black Forest and need a break to stretch your legs.

A nice amenity is the fresh fruit and chocolate in the room. Breakfast is included with the room. The dinner at the restaurant was wonderful- there are numerous choices at a buffet for appetizers, with the remaining four courses served by wait staff. After a starter of a caprese salad, I had courses of a wonderful cold tomato soup, gnocchi, sea bass and homemade ice cream and sorbet with fresh fruit compote. The hotel offers cooking classes with their world class chefs. The classes are excellent but they are conducted in German. If you do not speak German, they will be difficult to follow or enjoy. Even with someone provided to translate, the class, tips and normal comraderary is missing from the experience.
