    Pad Thai

When you first walk in, you kinda notice that it is not your typical restaurant. On the wall on the left is the menu ( great choices of dishes and you can select your spice level from 1-5 ).. There is no waitress or hostess per se.. it's kinda like fast food service but with freshly high quality food. Once you placed your order , find a table and have a seat . It does not take long to get your food.. it's fast and hot. We had a starter of calamari ( lightly breaded and perfectly cooked ) and chicken satay ( kinda dry but it was tasty ). My friend ordered the soup ( Tom Kha ) and I ordered the Pad Thai. We were just finishing our appetizers when the entrees arrived.. it was piping hot. We had to let it sit for a few minutes to cool down. The serving size for the soup was perfect.. my pad thai dish could have been a bit more loaded. Dont get me wrong.. the food was absolutely delicious. This was our second visit . so they are definitely doing something right. It is kinda odd though that each time we have gone, we were the only ones in there.. but we did see a few SKIP THE DISHES drivers come in for orders. The place is super clean and the owners are always smiling and greeting you with a smile.

When you open the door to this cosy mom and pop Thai place, you're greeted by the inviting aroma of sweet nutty rice cooking. Order and pay at the counter, then find your own table. Staff are pleasant, attentive, and generous with the smiles. I tried the Pad Sweet Basil for a main, and veggie spring rolls for an appetizer. The spring rolls were tasty--crispy, cabbagey, and served piping hot. The stir fry was also on point--strong on the basil with fresh veggies. Note that rice is conveniently included with the main (as opposed to an extra charge). A fellow diner's pad thai was also fantastic, not the overly sweet ketchup-heavy version of the dish that can sometimes pop up in other restaurants. I appreciated the no fuss, no muss nature of the dining experience. Tasty food served in a clean, unpretentious environment.

Tucked away past the hustle and bustle of Whyte Ave, Kaengthai Bistro is worth the walk east, just past the Strathcona tracks. The decor and menu is straightforward and simple, but the food more than makes up for it. It's a bit of a mix between a take out and sit down restaurant. You order at the counter (menus plastered on the wall with pictures!) but the waitress/owner will bring out a pot of tea and your dishes so pick a table/booth to sit at while you wait. The sign outside advertised a few of their dishes. Their prices are pretty reasonable, ranging from $5.95 to $12.95 for a dish. I was actually impressed by the presentation of their dishes - clean, minimalist look but with an attention to detail you don't normally see in Thai eateries. - Tom kha with shrimp ($7.95) - spicy and sour coconut soup with mushrooms, tomatoes, galangal, lemongrass, lime leaves, cilantro and dry chilies. Fresh, lacking spice but you really get the sour element in this tom kha. A nice alternative to the typical tom yum soup you always seem to see. - Pad kea mao with chicken ($10.95) - rice noodles fried with fresh peppers, bamboo shoots, baby corn, onion, bell peppers, lime leaves, Kra Chai and basil leaves. This one is level 2 on the spice chart and it actually had a good kick to it. My friend was drinking, no more like guzzling water down. Tasty but there could have been more noodles. - Pad num prik pow with pork ($10.95) - stir fried sweet chili paste with mushroom, bell peppers, baby corn, carrots and onion. Comes with a bowl of steamed jasmine rice. The chili paste sauce was sweet, everything tasted fresh and the rice was nice and fluffy. Here's a tip: make sure you tell them what spice level you want (from 1 (mild) to 5 (welcome to Thailand)). I will have to try level 5 next time, just for research purposes. Quaint, homey little Thai place. Why not check it out if you're in the area? Even easier if you're there to play some board games at The Hex Cafe. Just pop across the street to Kaenthai Bistro to get some good eats.

I quite like this place. Really small, maybe fits about 16 people, clean decor but I probably wouldn't bring someone here on a first date...not much for ambiance. You order first from the menu on the wall (there's a few extras there that aren't on the takeout menu), choosing your protein (chicken, pork, beef, tofu, or shrimp), and then pay and sit down. Kind of like Famoso's. Don't forget to specify the spice level otherwise the default is mild. There are 5 levels and the third, 'hot', was good for me though inconsistently applied - in my noodles it was perfect, spicy on the edge of too much (I have reasonably good tolerance for spice), but the second time in a takeout stirfry, it was more like level 2. Really amazing prices so it's a great take-out option. Everything I've tried is good but not great - it is not as good as places like Viphalay or Sukhothai but those places are also a lot more expensive. The curries and stir-fries come with jasmine rice; don't think there is a coconut rice option. Had the tom kha dine-in and take out and it was delicious, fragrant from the lemongrass and creamy coconut milk, with a good amount of veggies and aromatics. However it seems like you don't get as much when ordering it as takeout. The pad kea meo noodles were excellent - lots and lots of veggies like carrots, bamboo shoots, baby corn, and meat. My friend's #16, pad kra thiam prik thai, which was supposed to be a stir fry with black pepper and cilantro, was completed devoid of the latter, and there was barely any of the former. She said it was good but it just wasn't what she was expecting. Pad thai (take out) was on the dry side. The chicken they use is white meat and also a bit dried out both times. I'm a big fan of the pork - it went especially well in #12 pad cashew nut. Dine-in service was weird in that two of us got our meals (in a slightly longer-than-average wait) and the third had to wait another 10 minutes or so.

Wow - I've now been to Kaengthai Bistro three times, and every single time, I am impressed. The panang curry is so delicious. I would highly recommend it. Both types of soup are also amazing! The prices are extremely reasonable, and service is fantastic! Please go and try this place if you love Thai! Yummy!

Excellent food! I'm Chinese from China. Even though I haven't been to Thailand to get a taste of truly authentic Thai food, this place stands out among so many westernized Asian restaurants. Ordered the coconut spicy soup and chicken pad Thai. Both tastes great! Have to go to the counter yourself and place your order and pay in advance. Then you can sit down and wait for food to be brought to your table. The spice ranking is interesting! Ordered "close to Thailand" spiciness and it really gives you the spicy that you would get in Asia! Be prepared to sweat and blow your nose :) The price is fair but I'd give 5 stars if prices could be more economical.

Finally an authentic tasting Thai place in Edmonton. They have a great variety of dishes including noodles curry and soup and all dishes are very good. I had green curry, pad Thai and another curry. The prices are very sensible and service is outstanding. The owner is a super nice person and kind. The interior is nice but nothing special but the food is more than worth it. I will be back time and time again because no other place comes close.

Very authentic flavors, very well priced. Name your level of spicy. This place is a gem!

Tom Kha soup is my favorite! This was good!

Great food and an extremely nice family who run the restaurant. Wasn't impressed with the spring rolls though, I've had better.

The build your own noodle bowl has many options for a reasonable price of $16.25. There are also set noodle bowls which offer good options if one can't decide what to build. In addition to noodle bowls, there's congee and clay pot rice. I ordered the marinated chicken and preserved sausage as it had been years since I last ate it. It arrived with a bowl of tasty soup. There was plentiful chicken and sausage and lots of rice. There was also bok choy on top. The food was very tasty. We also order the tofu to share. The service was attentive and good. It has crispy rice at the bottom, which was a great texture and flavour along with large pieces of Basa fish covered in a delicious Szechuan chilli. It was not overly spicy. We also did a customizable soup with the Laksa broth, thin pieces of lamb, enoki mushrooms, and greens. Everything was fresh and delicious. I would definitely recommend the Laksa broth. It had a creamy coconut milk flavour along with a mildly spicy, savoury broth and a curry base. Service was wonderful. The ladies seemed very proud of the dishes and spent time explaining how to eat each dish and what the unique ingredients were. Big smiles all around when they found out it was our first time there. They were excited to suggest certain things and explain how the build your own soup worked. The only thing that could be improved on were the appetizers, we had the deep fried calamari and chicken wings, but they were not authentically Hong Kong style. They were a little bit crispy and seemed like frozen calamari. The chicken wings had been deep fried but had no seasoning except for salt and they were over salted. We would definitely return for the clay hot pot, the customizable soups, and ready-made soup broth. Also, we are planning to try the various congee's next time too!

I found the noodles too al dente for me. Beef was very fatty. I tried the "dry noodle" chicken. 6/10. Only green onions and hardly any mushroom as a vegetable (I gave the green onion to boyfriend). Chicken was fine. Noodles were super fresh. Sauce was really only the chicken's grease which was tasty but just greasy. Felt like eating just one big bowl of greasy noodles. Overall the noodles are definitely fresh, but texture was lacking.

They offer somewhat authentic (Yunan-styled) rice noodles with really good soup, such as pork bone soup rice noodles. The highlight for me is the unlimited refills on the noodles. Their bubble tea is also quite interesting and worth trying. Overall, I'd give them 8.3/10

Dagu Rice Noodle is a noodle soup restaurant chain that was founded in 2010 in Shanghai, China…read more Today they have locations all over China, in the USA, and in Canada. One of these locations can be found right here in Downtown Edmonton. In all honestly, the concept of this restaurant was a little bit over my head. I'm very familiar with noodle soups such as ramen and pho but this rice noodle soup was a whole new experience for me. I credit the Edmonton Food Faves We Crave 2022 list for naming Dagu as their Favourite Soup, which put this new-to-me restaurant experience on my radar. I visited on a Saturday evening and I had made a reservation in advance because I wasn't sure how busy they tend to get. It turned out that the reservation probably wasn't necessary, however the restaurant was consistently bustling with customers. The location itself is right on Jasper Ave, right in the heart of the city. From the outside the restaurant doesn't look like much but once inside, you are met with a large open space and towering ceilings. The room is bright and airy and I especially loved the unique mural artwork on the walls. Light planks of wood encase really cool drawings of the noodle making process and on another wall you'll see huge full-colour images of the soups that they serve. The dining room feels fresh and modern, yet approachable. Our server was friendly and happy to answer any of our questions (of which I thought I had many, but the experience turned out to be less scary than I thought). There is an entire menu page (two sides) dedicated to the drinks alone, most of them being bubble tea. And there are dozens of choices; from fruit tea, milk tea, cheese drinks, coconut drinks, yogurt drinks, panna cotta drinks, something called Yakult, fresh milk drinks, smoothies & frappes, Oreo drinks, mochi drinks, coffee, plus alcoholic beverages. It's A LOT. I liked the use of emojis on the menu to help with some guidance. I tried to stay close to what I already enjoy and decided to look within the Milk Tea section. The Hokkaido Milk Tea ($6.99) seemed like a solid option and I also added Tapioca ($0.99). There are plenty of other add-ons that you can do but I felt that having the tapioca was the most important component. At first the server said that they were all out of tapioca. But then she said that they were making more and that it would take 10-20 minutes. I was happy to wait. It didn't seem to take too long and soon enough I had a bubble tea in hand. I enjoyed the drink a lot - what's not to like? The milk tea reminded me of the stuff that you get in cans from vending machines on the streets of Japan and the tapioca (worth the wait!) was sweet and delicious. At this point there are tons of bubble tea shops in the city and I wouldn't say that this one stood out above the rest. However, I did enjoy that it was a part of our overall dining experience. Bubble tea is just fun. The appetizer section of the menu is also very extensive and I could certainly imagine the social aspect of ordering a whole bunch of different dishes and sharing with a group. I had heard good things about the Salty Crispy Chicken ($8.99 for regular) and looked forward to trying it. Many of the appetizers come in regular or large sizes, which is useful if you are scaling up or down depending on the size of your group. The morsels of extra crispy chicken were easy to eat and addictively salty. My only issue is that the pieces were very small. There was no point where I had a nice juicy bite of chicken, only crunchy small bits. The flavour was good but I would have been happier with a bit more substance. I would probably try the spicy quail eggs next time! The main event is the rice noodle soups. Served very hot, with unlimited noodle refills, and made with no MSG, I was ready to try a whole new thing! My first thought was about vermicelli noodles, which are also made from rice. However, the noodles at Dagu are not the same at all. Vermicelli are often flat and are usually very thin. These rice noodles are a lot thicker, more like a Shanghai noodle, which makes sense because that's where this restaurant is from. In a soup however, this noodle becomes pretty soft and slippery, kind of like the noodles in a classic bowl of chicken noodle soup. There are lots of choices and I had to go for the Crossing Bridge Rice Noodle Soup because I'd heard the most about it. A style of soup from Yunnan province, this dish is named for its deconstructed nature. I picked the Sour & Spicy with Beef Slices (Ham, fish tofu, ground pork, quail egg, crab stick, lettuce, bamboo, black fungus, corn, and sour cabbage - $14.99) and I added Shrimp ($2.99). The first part to arrive was all of the toppings plus a bowl of noodles. The "deconstructed" concept felt like a lot of fun and turned the meal into a whole activity. I liked the idea of being able to customize your dish to your exact preferences. The beef slices, bright red in colour with some nice marbling, looked v
