Great Lakes National Cemetery - Committal Shelter #1

The Great Lakes National Cemetery (GLNC) in Holly is a grand property that gives tribute to our…read moreloved ones that have served our country in a branch of the military. On this occasion we said goodbye to my cousin's dear father, who served in the Army. This place memorializes military Veteran's self-less service with dignity, honor and the respect that they deserve. Here in Holly, Michigan is just one of the 155 national Veteran Affairs (VA) gravesites available. Burial in a VA national cemetery is open to all members of the armed forces and Veterans who have met active duty service requirements and have been discharged under conditions other than dishonorable. Their spouses, minor children and, under certain conditions, dependent unmarried adult children are also eligible for burial even if they pre-decease the Veteran. As part of our family estate planning, this will be the resting place for my beloved parents when the time comes, which I hope is a long time from now. The bonus for our Veterans, Service Members or Family Members is that they may receive this benefit at absolutely no cost. Yes, NO COST! It is includes the gravesite, a white headstone or grave marker, a burial flag, Presidential Memorial Certificates, opening and closing of the grave, a grave liner and perpetual (ongoing) care of the gravesite. The grounds are beautifully manicured. The rows of aligned white headstones are pristinely maintained and marked. This is truly a sight to behold knowing who these headstones represent. Once you enter the main entrance to the GLNC from Belford Road you drive down the avenue of flags which is literally a pathway of American flags. The administration building is to your left. This area is organized with designated lanes for multiple services to take place on a moving schedule. Your car processional to your committal shelter for the final military honors is timely and proper. The committal shelters are complete with seating for the family with additional standing room. For subsequent GLNC visits, there is a Gravesite Locator kiosk in the lobby of the administration building along with maps to find your loved ones place of burial by typing in their last name. I interacted with half a dozen staff members on this day and they were all very professional and polite, even one extending his condolences. Tip of the day: Please allow extra travel time for construction and highway backups to arrive on time. Google Car Play will give you the heads up for unexpected lane closures and alternate routes. To the buried service members: Thank you for your service!

Not to worry I was told they are getting the equipment replaced. We had family time scheduled from noon to 1pm for moms funeral. Needless to say they dropped the ball in that also. Our Pastor called them a noon to let them know family time had started and still no body. Very poor service.

They do have comfortable couches, clean elegant viewing parlor, drinking fountain with paper cups, decent bathrooms. Unfortunately all the things they dont have add up to quite a lot. This is as bare bones/no frills/bare minimum that you can get. Nobody went out of their way to even ask if we needed anything at any point during the day. The greeter sat on a chair in the hallway with a grumpy face and watched people walk in. It could have been worse, at least nobody was rude to us like i read in the other comments. I cant leave a good review though as i like having all the stuff they dont offer. Could i just get a self serve cup of coffee at least? Come on... never coming back.

They showed us nothing but patience and compassion. We made an appointment to visit and receive information on their services. We were so impressed by them that we decided they were the ones for us when the time came. Never did we imagine that we would need to utilize their services the very next day. With an early morning phone call, the Malburg's guided us through the process to honor our loved one. The Funeral Home itself is quite impressive. It was bright and airy. Seating was arranged to encourage conversation. Side tables were arranged near the seating to display photos. They have a wall to display photos on boards that they provide. As well as a television for slideshows. The overall feeling was homey, which is exactly what we were looking for. The pastor that they recommended was phenomenal. He did a fantastic job helping the mourners to find peace. Our loved one looked amazing, as though the battle she lost had not taken its toll. There is no other I would consider if we ever have the misfortune to need their services again.
