The course? It's beautiful. Ocean views, solid layout, decent greens. No complaints there. But let's not pretend it's worth what they're charging. The Royal is overpriced. The Kai--par 70--same story. You're paying premium prices for a product that doesn't match it. And the bigger issue? The people. Inside staff--especially the older guy with glasses--complete super dick . Outside staff? Disengaged. Zero energy. Zero effort. Like they're doing you a favor just by being there. Only bright spots were the starter and the guy in the shack--everyone else looked like they checked out a long time ago. And that's the theme: they don't care. Cart service ran out of cups... came back later... still out of cups. That's not a mistake--that's a system that doesn't prioritize the customer. Look, it's Maui. The place sells itself. They know it. And because of that, they don't feel pressure to deliver anything beyond the basics. If you want real value? Go play the municipal course on the other side of the island--the one locals compare to Pebble Beach. Or better yet, play the Dunes. That's where the experience actually matches the expectation. Aloha! We played Royal Ka'anapali on October 20, 2025 @ 1100 hours. I'll get to WHY later into my review but if I only had 1 word to make this review, sadly, it would be "DISAPPOINTING." So, we were supposed to play Kapalua, but as (bad) luck had it, they were closed for 90 days due to drought. I've watched Kapalua on TV for 25+ years so we were really stoked to finally play it but it just wasn't meant to be So, we settled on Ka'anapali, which we presumed would be at least a great backup plan since they've hosted Senior PGA events and Skins Games in the past. On to the review: the staff was okay. They weren't "friendly," but they weren't cold or rude either- they were just there. Contrarily, we played Wailea CC Emerald Course a couple days earlier and they all were very friendly, very outgoing and they truly seemed grateful that we were playing their course. None of that @ Ka'anapali. I played collegiate golf on scholarship so we played the Blue Tees which measures at roughly 6,700+ yards. The course was in "decent" shape and that's all. Wailea a couple days prior was in terrific shape. The analogy I'd use would be that Wailea's condition was an MLB ballclub and Ka'anapali's was a Triple A club. On to the BAD: it was slow, slow, slowwwwww. Wow was it slow. And we never once encountered a Marshall at least trying to move along play. By the end , it truly was torturous to wait on every, single shot- ugh! We didn't come across a beverage cart until midway through the 16th hole, which at that time was approaching 5 hours out on the course. Because we were so close to finally finishing, no thank-you, I'll pass a $12 water now, but a candy bar and Gatorade would've been greatly appreciated about 7 or 8 holes and 2 hours earlier. And finally, the biggest drawback to Ka'anapali: the price. We paid $276 per player and with only 1 hole that's kinda, sorta along the ocean, the very average condition of the course and the maddeningly slow play, $276 is an absolute rip-off. I'm sorry, but it is. Wailea was $72 bucks cheaper ($204, same time of day) and superior in every, measurable way. I'll close the review by saying this: there's nothing wrong with Royal Ka'anapali.... IF it were a $100 greens fee. To me and my group, every dollar after about $100 bucks is a dollar that Ka'anapali is stealing from you for what the course is and what it offers. Cheers and Mahalo! read more

On almost all accounts this course can be (and should be much better). Not sure who owns this course but appears that they do not care one bit about their product. Course itself is like a municipal course - no craftsmanship or pride of work in taking care of greens, bunkers, fairways, water availability, having a towel for your cart, etc.. It's sad as this course has so much potential. Yes you're in Maui and they got you - perhaps that's the reason for the subpar conditions and lackadaisical care and effort. We have played these courses many times over the years and it's the same every time. Silly us for paying the fees and playing - but - no more. It's worth the drive to play elsewhere. The Royal course is well kept and players were kept at a fair pace. You can tell Kai is less nice because there's a lot of crabgrass patches on the greens, which can affect your putting game. It's convenient to have wet towels provided in your cart to clean your clubs. They were also forgiving if you accidentally dropped it on the course. I played in a threesome for both the Royal and Kai courses and we were constantly pushed by twosomes and single players, so keep that in mind if you're playing in a group. read more

You can see chickens from the very first hole. Kai course layout is good, but the greens are not very well maintained. It's very accessible since it's close to the hotel, and you can also see houses with ocean views along the way. Next time, I plan to try a different course. read more

Pulled up and bag drop was there and just took our bags. Lots of room for improvement. We have been to places like Paiute GC in Las Vegas and the bag drop makes you feel like you are a pro. A good morning and welcome to the GC is better than what we got. Not to be harsh, just comparing for the review. Hence 4star too instead of 5. Layout of the course is great. Elevation changes etc. Holes are undulated. Pro shop attendants were nice and attentive. Sherry and Elaine were great. Golf carts are newish. Electric. With GPS. The pins were not updated in the gps. I have been to cheaper courses that had this done properly. So not sure what happened there. So that added to the 4star rating as well. Driving range is good for all clubs. But they make you walk over there. About 100 yards. Then you get a small basket of about 25 balls. It is complimentary and enough to warm up. Plus there were extra from other golfers where they didn't hit all of the balls. There were about 8 mats if I remember correctly. We did not wait at all to hit. Starter was good. Golf course condition was amazing considering two huge storms just came through. Cannot believe they got this place cleaned up that quickly. We only were cart path only on 3 holes. And those holes looked fine. Probably too soft. Cooler on the cart was filled with ice and two complimentary bottled waters. So the bag drop redeem themselves a little. We appreciated it. There is a drink cart. And she came around at least twice in our round. So that is great. There are no direction signs on a couple holes. Like going to 16, there is a message, but we did not know which side of the street. I think hole 6 was the other one. There are ball cleaners/trash cans, and water stations. That was great. Did not see any ground under repair anywhere on the course. There were however more than a few sand traps that had mud in the bottom of the trap. Not the whole trap, just a 8-10' circle sometimes. We just moved the ball. So some traps need grooming. Others were groomed so they are obviously working it. I think thats it. This place is a 5 star GC. Just had a couple storms. read more

What a fun and beautiful course to play while in Maui on vacation! This was my first time golfing in Maui so we rented clubs which were pretty nice. When we parked and walked up, they were already working on setting up our golf cart and bags. The pro shop is perfect for any friends and family souvenirs if they like golf stuff. I grabbed one of the Travis Mathew's Course shirt for my bf and grabbed a couple golf towels for myself and friends. The driving range is small but gets the job done. The course is very wide but a good challenge for sure. You can't beat the views on nearly every hole. We did the super twilight option and played at 3 and finished around 6ish, so you can definitely play quick if you'd like. The nice part is the Roy's restaurant is right next to the pro shop so we naturally had dinner right after we finished the 18th hole. This is definitely a fun course to add to your list. read more

This review is for Footgolf. I'm not a golfer at all but when we learned they had a 9 hole course where you could kick soccer balls around we couldn't pass it up. You can reserve times between 4-6pm and it's only $15/person plus $5 each if you need a ball and $30 for a golf cart that fits two people. We checked in and then stocked up on drinks at Roy's where they had a variety of canned beer and seltzer for $6/can and you need to get at least one snack item because of the local alcohol laws to take it on the golf course. There were four of us, so we set off on the golf course with two people in each golf cart. The start of the holes are marked with orange balls in the ground and the actual holes are marked with flags and sized accordingly for a soccer ball. They ranged from par 3-5 and were challenging and fun throughout the nine holes. Some of them required more distance while others needed accuracy to get better placement for the next shot. The only downside our group had was that we wished we could wear more athletic clothes versus golf attire so it would be more comfortable to run around and kick the ball. We had three girls in our group and while our skorts and polos were cute we would have loved to wear workout gear. It also got REALLY hot so on top of beers, bring water and sunscreen and stay hydrated. We were all coated in sweat by mid game. We still had so much fun though. Would absolutely do this again!! read more

I played the Royal Course at Kaanapali, Thursday Sept 26th 2024. Overall, I was very disappointed in the course management. The greens, which plugged about 2-3 weeks ago were not updated with sand and rolled to level them out. They seemed to have plugged them, then let them grow out naturally. So very slow and bumpy as you putted. Most of the tee-offs were mixed with dirt and some grass. Spent alot of times hitting off a grass and dirt mix. Also, this is a No Alcohol serving on the course. So the cart girl only had non-alcoholic drinks and chips. No hot dogs or any other hot snacks. So you'll have to BYOB. There was some notable experiences. The fairways we great and the rough is challenging due to its short and denseness. Your ball would sink down in the rough and make you work to dig it out. The employees were very nice and friendly too. For the non-resident, the money spent is better off playing any of the Wailea Courses. Which are in alot better shape, even after they plugged their greens a week earlier. Hopefully this helps you decide your decision playing here. read more

I took my dad to play the Royal Ka'anapali Course and we enjoyed every minute of it. It was our third round on Maui. We previously played the Plantation Course at Kapalua (https://bit.ly/3p5mbHS) and the Gold Course at Wailea (https://bit.ly/32aL785). I rate all three experiences five stars. As a visitor from the mainland, I have yet to encounter a golf course on Maui that I did not love. Golf in Maui is truly golf in paradise. The weather, environment, and views are simply and consistently incredible. If I were to split hairs, yes, Kapalua Plantation is the best of the bunch. It's also the most expensive. I think Wailea Gold also beats Ka'anapali Royal. However, ultimately, you can't go wrong with any of these courses. They're all outstanding, in my opinion. Like other resorts and clubs, Ka'anapali Golf Courses consist of two 18-hole courses: the Royal Ka'anapali Course and the Ka'anapali Kai Course. These are located on the west side of the island, just north of Lahaina. These courses are close to, but do not directly border, the coast, with the exception of holes 4 and 5 on the Royal Course. In comparison to Kapalua Plantation and Wailea Gold, the terrain is less hilly and thus, less scenic, but don't get me wrong, both courses still have amazing views of the Pacific Ocean and the islands of Lanai and Molokai in the distance. The further you go inland, the higher the elevation, and the terrain in Ka'anapali is still plenty hilly. Holes on both courses straddle either side of Honoapi'ilani Highway (Hawaii Route 30). In fact, what drew me to this course was the westward view from the highway, looking at Royal Nos. 4 and 5. It was so beautiful, I had to get us a tee time. On this last trip to Maui, we stayed at Marriott's Maui Ocean Club, which is right next door to the course. The room my wife and I had had a view that overlooked Kai No. 17. I booked our round through the club's concierge. Concierge gave me a couple helpful rate sheets to compare current prices for golf on Maui: 1. Standard rates and packages at Ka'anapali Golf Courses: https://bit.ly/3IZk8gr 2. Rates at all courses on Maui, including rental, ride-only, and junior fees: https://bit.ly/3yQbPPz Ka'anapali isn't cheap, but it also isn't priced like a bucket-list course like Kapalua. We played the after-1pm twilight rate of $149 per person. We also rented clubs at $35 per set. The rental clubs were Titleist. Putters were Scotty Cameron. Unlike Kapalua, which charges $69 per set (after 1pm), Ka'anapali's sets did not include balls. Kapalua's rental set included two sleeves of balls. Understandable, given the price difference. I purchased a box (4 sleeves) of TaylorMade Distance+ balls for $30 inside the pro shop. The balls had the Ka'anapali logo on them, so that was cool. A good excuse to get logo balls. Between my dad and me, we only lost 5 balls of the dozen. A success, in my opinion! I disagree with some of the advice Marriott's concierge gave me when I arranged our tee time on the Royal Course. They said both courses have equally great views. I disagree. I think the Royal Course has better views than the Kai Course. The Royal Course has more views of the ocean. They also said Royal was more difficult than Kai, but the scorecards say differently. From the tips, the Royal Course measures 6,700 yards with a 73.7/129 rating/slope. From the tips, the Kai Course is shorter at 6,388 yards and has a 71.6 rating, but its slope is 136. The majority of us are bogey (or worse) golfers. The higher the slope, the more difficult the course is for bogey golfers. Prolific course architect Robert Trent Jones Sr designed the Royal Course. It opened in 1962. The Royal Course hosted the Wendy's Champions Skins Game from 2008 through 2011. Many legends competed in it, such as Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Ben Crenshaw, and Greg Norman. The 9th season of Golf Channel's Big Break - Big Break Ka'anapali (2008) - took place here. Along with the aforementioned Royal 4th and 5th holes, the 10th hole has a great downhill view of the ocean and Lanai. It's stunning. With the Royal Course, you start and end at the clubhouse. The middle of the round, holes 7-15, take you into the foothills of the West Maui Mountains. The hole marker for 15 says rainbows "can be seen from almost anywhere on the course." And it's the truth. We saw bright, vivid rainbows, including a double rainbow while on 13. As far as course conditions, they were great; comparable to Wailea Gold, maybe a touch less. Kapalua Plantation was on another level, near Tour-quality. On-course restrooms are located before No. 7 and after No. 15. Food and beverage, including the F&B cart, were from Roy's. Roy's is the high-end Hawaiian restaurant chain with Maui's only location on-site at the golf course clubhouse. My hot dog and Powerade were good. The clubhouse was a bit dated, especially the men's locker room. Carts were E-Z-GO with GPS. The staff was great, especially Jack at the bag drop. read more

Played the Kai course last week, they gave us a discounted rate of $120 bucks due to "5" of the greens that had moss growing and rough patches. There were some great views that made the experience somewhat better but 17 of the 18 greens were just completely unplayable, you had to use a sledgehammer to get the ball close to the hole. read more

The place is not cheap, but compared to other Maui courses, it's a freakin' bargain. My son is a hacker, but playing with him is priceless. I didn't want to blow a mortgage payment by playing Kapalua (oh my god....those are amazing courses up there) so we hit up the Kai course at Kaanapali with the other father and son in our travel party. Good location, right off the main highway. It makes for a convenient yet unremarkable setting. You get some good ocean views but not exactly on the beach. There are two courses here and about 15 of the 18 holes on Kai are on the land side of the highway. You can still see the ocean on most holes. The staff is very kind and accommodating. Rental clubs are plentiful and about $70 per set. Cheaper for multiple rounds. They are good quality clubs but, man, they have a lot of mileage on them. It's about $50 to ship from home so do the math yourself based on the number of rounds you are playing and if those rounds are at the same course. The course was in great shape. No bare spots since there's plenty of rain. The greens were soft in the early morning but quickly firmed up. Not a super challenging course, a bit of water and some lovely views. read more

This is for Kannapali Royal Pros: This is my first trip to Hawaii. We are members of a Nashville country where my husband plays almost weekly, and I am a relatively new golfer. We rented clubs since we were only playing one day. My husband thought they were ok; he, of course, wished that he had his clubs. For me they were fantastic! They were so much nicer and heavier than my starter clubs! The cart attendant was extremely polite, professional, and helpful. The course itself was beautiful and enjoyable! We enjoyed the cart staff and the course very much! Negatives: One thing only to speak of is the lady in the pro shop. I truly wish I had her name to share. From the first 5 minutes into walking into the shop and then calling at the turnabout if they had a halfway or beverage cart, SHE WAS RUDE! Maybe she was having a rough day; I doubt it, but maybe. I wouldn't even give this course one star. Terrible experience - first of all, the front desk lady was SO rude and talking to like us like we were dumb. You each have to have your own set of clubs. Oh and the fees? Outrageous. Beautiful views & course but terrible people with disgusting attitudes. They wouldn't let our 3 year old ride with us as well! Royal course is a pretty straightforward golf course with some amazing views. The greens and fairways are in great condition. When I played, two of the holes had temp tee boxes which no one cared to mention before the round and no discount was offered. One tee box for what was a par four was literally in the rough and now a 135yd par 3. I was in the first group out and two of the bunkers my group hit into were a complete mess and had not been raked. The clubhouse and the restaurant are really dated and in need of some love. The only thing that seems to be updated are the prices. All in all, you're paying for the views and a course that is in good shape but nothing super interesting. read more

Was in Ka'anapali for a vacation with my Ohana this past week and we decided to play the Royal course this trip. It was in fantastic shape which was a great treat!! Got to meet Karl and he is top notch and doing a great job keeping this gem in great shape. The greens were perfect, bunkers nice with sand and the fairways were in great shape too. I have been playing the courses here for two weeks. Both the Royal and Kai courses are in good shape. The views from the longer Royal course are great and the greens were fast. The Kai course is shorter but still has challenges. None the less, this is still resort golf so high handicap players will enjoy and low handicappers can be challenged by bunkers surrounding smaller greens. Be careful during April as courses in Hawaii get punched. Courses will open but the greens will need time. Remember to ask. The staff is friendly and kind but the little things from a higher priced club are missing to make the experience better for golfers; When the courses are being aerated, the package deals are not worth purchasing. Allowing for better deals on seeded courses should come into play; Kaanapali does not store clubs even for multi-round players, golfers need to schlep their clubs each day; Water must be purchased rather than provided for free; No tees or ball markers were out by the starter.
