A couple of years ago I celebrated my 30th birthday here and it was a totally fabulous night. I re-visited about a month ago for a casual dinner with friends. I have no idea how I first discovered this pub. I'm guessing one of my friends told me about it - and booking it for my 30th was simple and straightforward. Inside it's a very traditional looking pub which has had a bit of a renovation so it's quite classy, and outside there's a beer garden as well as a covered area which is what we used for my birthday. It was just perfect and made for a really fun night. When we visited recently, we enjoyed some drinks in the beer garden before moving inside for dinner. The menu is gastropub style and there's some really interesting sounded dishes on the menu but I went for the token chicken parma as it had been so long since I'd had one. While I wouldn't say it was the best parma I've ever had it was pretty damn good. Overall, this is a lovely little pub off the chaotic Chapel St which is well worth a visit if you're looking for a quiet catch up with friends.

All of a sudden walking past houses, you hear the chatter of the crowd in the beer garden before you lay eyes on the Flying Duck. I arrived at 7pm on a Saturday night and the place was packed, and pumping. There is a front bar, and a large outdoor beer garden. We were in a small function room for my friends birthday, which was quite intimate but a good size. I ate a quick bite for dinner, which was the fish and chips- a nice meal and I didn't have to wait too long on a busy night. Definitely will be heading back for another night at the Duck.

I do think I like it MORE than Bistro Gitan. From the outside, you could be forgiven for thinking this was a pub, rather than an elevated casual french restaurant. Inside it's really nice and right off the bat the waiters and staff were friendly and greeted everyone warmly. We sat at a table right near the open kitchen, and it was fun to watch the chefs preparing the food. Practically everything we ordered was delicious. I had the Tuna Crudo which was soooo good, and the Duck for main (which was the only negative of the night) with the Gratin Dauphinois and for dessert (yes, three courses since the food was so good), the Bomb Alaska, which was a special of the day. The negative for the duck was that the two of us that ordered it, found it to be very gristly, fatty and hard to chew. I just couldn't face another bite. But the entree, the rest of the main and the dessert were incredible, and the service was fantastic. Food came out all together in one hit (something I love about a good restaurant), and they didn't clear the plates until everyone at the table had finished (also top service) and they knew who ordered which dish when it came out. Prices are a teeny on the high side, but I guess most places are these days. I would DEFINITELY come back here again. Parking is easy, nice ambience, great food and I highly recommend it!

Service was quick and friendly. I ordered the swordfish tacos. They were okay, though the breading definitely outweighed the amount of fish. The fries were hot but on the skinny side. One concern I had was seeing used water bottles being brought back to the bar from tables. The bartender did not empty or wash them before refilling, just added more water (tap). This seemed like a potential health-code issue and made me a bit uneasy. Overall, a decent spot with friendly service, but the handling of the water bottles is something I hope they address.

A cute corner pub with lots of street parking in the area. Casual & good vibes; could easily just hang for a couple of hours. Decent list of BEERS on tap. INTERNATIONAL VISITORS will opt for NOBLE BOY. The KANGAROO was served as fillets with a BERNAISE sauce with fries & a salad. Great portion size & the roo was so tender. It reminded me of lamb but not as gamey. The fries were also amazing! Light, crispy, & not too greasy. I ate every single one. CHICKEN PARMA is also a popular dish here & some say it's the best in Melbourne! You have the option of HAM or smoked kangaroo as a topping. Comforting & hearty dish, you can't go wrong. We also go one of the SPECIALS: PORK RACK. Pork was well-cooked & the POTATO TART was unique.

It's actually a stone's throw from the river and there's a great park just down the end of the street -- though I dare say said construction zone will have ruined that. The pub is a cracker of a building, all green and dilapidated and grimy looking. Inside is a warren of little rooms and spots to rest your weary legs. There's an ace garden area out the back. All the furniture, and the decor in general, is falling apart at the seams and at times I wonder whether the pub may be on its last legs. I popped down for lunch the other day to find it closed in the middle of the arvo, which sent a shock wave through my body. It is the kind of place that will open, or not, depending on extraneous circumstances. The food here is standard pub fodder, the beer is cod and the staff are friendly as hell. But it's the character and one-of-a-kind-ness of this place that keeps me interested. There are fewer and fewer of these un-renovated old girls in Melbourne and very few in this part of town. It's got a long history... I'd be sad to see it go.

On a hot night they would be everywhere out the front drinking pints and looking too cool for school. Signs proclaimed happy hours! $16 steak night! I wasn't convinced I'd fit in with the hipsters (am I in denial?) but the $16 steak on Tuesday night sure did sound like an appealing way to test the waters. We arrived a little after 6pm and it was pretty dead. There was 4 or 5 others in the bar and not a single soul outside. Was it too early? Was it not sunny enough? Had the hipsters moved on to the new hot spot in town? We ordered steaks ($16 for a 300gm porterhouse with chips and salad) and an extra portion of salad to make us feel better for clogging our arteries with the chips. A pint for him and a glass of Shiraz for me. The steaks themselves were okay. The flavour was good but they were cooked a little over than our requested medium-rare. The chips were super crunchy (twice fried?) and the portion of salad we ordered was, well, a bit strange. The cider dressing it was served with tasted suspiciouly like melted butter and congealed a bit on the raddichio leaves. Maybe it was supposed to do that, who knows? Dinner for two at around $60 is pretty decent if you ask me. For a resonably priced Tuesday night meal in a quieter environment then the Marquis of Lorne isn't a bad option
