I had a look around some of the little shops and then the Sainsbury's but then I found Beanfreaks. I did at first think it would be like other health food shops - over priced and a lousy range but this was a surprise. Gluten free products are actually on three different shelves so its worth looking around. There are all sorts of healthy goods here but the gf range is the best I've ever seen. Organ, energie, dietary specials, trufree and tons more, with baking supplies, noodles, pastas, and sweet treats all available. Some times there are deals on - I had to go shopping for some treats to bring back to Edinburgh and would have bought more had it not been for the space restrictions in my luggage. Great little find - wish we had one in Edinburgh but I did check and can order online :)

I was right about the first bit. This is a wonderful little store with a really down-to-earth and funky vibe. From the snazzy and colourful (Caribbean influenced?) frontage to the actual products on display it's clear that a lot of thought has gone into this enterprise. The focus is on organic, fresh and healthy food and drink. Towards the back of the shop the store opens up into a huge back room filled with excellent raw foods, cleaning products, teas and so much more. There's often a good little deal on the go so things really aren't too dear - and the owner's lovely too! A real gem this one.

I have trouble digesting without specific enzymes, causing reflux and discomfort. I couldn't eat without them. With 7 days left on our vacation, I was physically and mentally miserable. I googled natural food stores and Wild Oats popped up. I drove 30 miles to get to it, and they had EVERYTHING I needed, plus sugar-free, dairy-free, coconut cream ice cream alternative. A good place to stock up on supplies, it's a actually fairly well priced despite being organic. And of course having museli every morning is a lot cheaper than a bacon sandwich, so a good place if you're tight on cash. Very popular, it can get overcrowded on Saturdays. They stuff quite a lot into a small space, unexpected finds include toiletries (eco-friendly ones, of course). Scoopaways a great idea and a good place for cheap staples.

A perfect place for the health and ethically conscious, the shop stocks everything from frozen food to sweets and sundries. I'm a particular fan of the gluten free range, as I have a caeliac friend who I often invite to dinner parties. There's so much choice that you can spend ages just browsing round. We also buy a lot of things we can't get locally in our town, and we usually buy some of the lovely fresh snacks to have a picnic by the estuary. In addition to all the food and wine, they sell gifts including local crafts too (I bought some attractive wooden jewellery once) and there's a little cafe as well selling great coffees. It would take me all day to write about everything you can see in this shop so you'll just have to look at the website for the rest! Friendly staff too, always ready for a chat or to help you find what you're looking for. Great for everyone but also vegans, vegetarians and those on gluten-free (and other) diets.

I went in looking for diabetic sugar alternatives, and was pleased to discover that they not only stocked it, but charged the same decent price as Holland & Barretts. There is a wide range of natural and organic cosmetics, shampoos, lotions and the like. They have a great range of sea salt scrubs in a number of enchantingly tempting flavours. This shop is not all fancy and hippy like you might think. Instead it's a sensible and well laid out store that does exactly what it says it does; provides health and beauty products. And a good range at a good price.

The store interior is a bit dated and the carpet could use replacing, but the stock here more than makes up for it. I even found Tom's of Maine deodorant, which I've only seen back home in the States, priced at £3.80 (it's aluminium free, which is apparently better for you. Whether that's true or not remains to be seen). Pro Health also carries a wide range of beauty products, many of them natural and organic (I was pleased to see an extensive selection of items made using tea tree oil), as well as protein supplements, nuts, and vitamins. Pro Health also sell poncy teas like Clipper, which I fail to find at competing stores, so major points for that.
