I had 2 complicated births and if it weren't for Dr. Zhou, I could not imagine the outcome! The first birth with my daughter, my cervix was swollen and very hard for me to push, she didn't rush me into C-section, instead she coached me to try many positions and eventually I pushed my daughter out. The second birth with my son, I was induced (due to my complication with my first birth) and my baby was having heart rate deceleration, she immediately proceeded with Emergency C section after confirmed with me (she said she can still try other options), I chose to do the c section and my son was all well! I have seen drs in the CPMC group initially, the major difference is since Dr Zhou is private she sees me through all my pregnancy and will also be the doctor to deliver my baby. Dr Zhou is super professional and compassionate! My first delivery was with another OB and it was a nightmare, I was in active contraction for 35 hrs in the El Camino hospital and 9.5cm dilation(for some reason, even the Epi didn't work on me), but finally got to emergency C section, after I was released from the hospital, I got wound infection and took long time to recover. I was so traumatized that prevented me from having another baby for over 6 years. Until I met Dr Zhou, she understood my worries and concerns easily. She read my medical history carefully and assured me that she wouldn't let me suffer both delivery pains again, and explained her plans in detail patiently. I had tears in my eyes to be really heard and being taken care of physically and emotionally. Under her direction, I got confidence back to try on VBAC even with pregnancy diabetes. During the last couple weeks of pregnancy, she evaluated me again and we both agreed on scheduled C section due to my complications. She calls me day and night to check on me when I had false contractions. She makes wise decisions on when to go to hospital and when to wait at home. She is the one to operate the surgery and partnered with another great OB Dr Xie. She is so professional with the surgery I recovered very well and so quick amazingly. I had no infections, no shaking, even not much pain after the surgery. The wound looks beautiful. I couldn't imagine the whole process can be so easy on me this time and it healed my ptsd on delivery. I can't be more grateful with Dr Zhou. I saw Dr Zhou for outside monitoring. She doesn't have up to date ultrasound machine. Her machine images are not clear. She wasn't thorough & she rushed through the scan. She said normally you don't see much on day 4 of your cycle. She was dismissive. So she was planning to report nothing was found on either ovary back to my doctor. I asked her to go back in to view my right ovary. I asked for images and the report. I'm glad I did because we possibly saw a decent size follicle. she said her machine is not that new and perhaps I should go to a different place since I have a difficult body/case. gaslighting!!! Oh I plan on it. I felt deceived and like she was blaming me for the outcome. First of all, she's clearly not set up for baseline ultrasound exams. From the technology to her knowledge of what to look for during the scan. Her front desk personal wouldn't walk me back to the room for the scan before I paid. Also, no refunds! I found it to be strange. Because normally a service is provided and then payment is requested/accepted. Now, I think if I would've seen the ultrasound machine before I would have turned around and not proceeded. I'm telling my experience so no one else has to go through it. **Update** this place is FRAUD!!! they charged my credit card for the service and billed my insurance. Before, I went in for the visit the receptionist said (confirmed with billing) they don't take my insurance and I would have to pay out of pocket for the service. I checked my insurance and they paid in full for the visit (no copay and patient responsibility $0). I will report them to my insurance and my credit card for fraud. RUN far away!!!!! read more

If you want to be an animal waiting to be slaughtered , doctor Joy is your choice , she has little regard of your physical well-being & I fear her medical decision are profit making driven. 1)Treatment / surgery decision are made on a fly . doctor Joy advised the most invasive treatment plan without considering patient 's recovery & welfare. She suggested surgery ( removal of fibroids) immediately without walking through or explaining my MRI & ultra sound result . Not even explaining / discussing what have been found in the MRI / ultrasound . No explaining what result to expect in the surgery or post surgery, what are the potential risks , not even a proper medical name or procedure is given .Basically it is a simple " you have to do it , decide now , and next time I see u at the operation room" She also came up treatment plan in a fly , first suggested doing fibroid removal, then ivf later . Then after 30 seconds she said maybe it is better to do ivf first , then surgery ! If you change your order in McDonald that fast is ok, but this is 2 surgeries we are talking about ! 2) I have to proactively asked for a prescription order to treat myself . When found out my TSH is high, she did not suggest any remedy, I asked for medication , then she follow my suggestion to prescribe. Doctor Joy did not explain the TSH medication have to be taken with empty stomach , this job has become the duty of my next Obygn ! 3) in office ultra sound equipment is not up to date , she ends up referring me to do an extra ultra sound in hospital ( which cost way more ) . Other Obygn 's office 's ultra sound equipment is sufficient , this is first time ever I see any Obygn without basic equipment . 4) she order unnecessary expansive procedure MRI , which my other 2 Obygn deemed useless . Wasted my time & money , and Dr Joy did not even discuss single bits of the MRI result with me . At the end, I have to bring my results to another great Obygn ( Dr Lillian Swiersz in Freyja Clinic ) , who patiently and respectively discuss my MRI result and whether the surgery is 100% necessary. Having Dr. Zhou as my obgyn was a total nightmare. During the 8 months of care, I couldn't feel she cared about her patients. Every time I had to wait at least 40 minutes to see her, and she's done with me within 5 minutes. She never explains what exams she's sending me to get and what the results mean. She said my baby was big so I was very scared for the delivery and I asked her how big my baby was. She always went like it's impossible to know (her office is old so there is no equipment to check). I even offered to pay out of pocket for a scan and go to other place to check baby's weight but she refuesd to order one for me. What's worse was she/ her office didn't check my insurance. Throughout the 8 months period never once did she mention anything about the hospital she's going to deliver my baby at or walk me through the process. At 39 weeks I found out online that I could pre-register to the hospital myself. So I did and got a call from the hospital saying they don't take my insurance! I freaked out and recalled that Dr. Zhou sent me to that hospital at 20 weeks to get ultrasound and I got turned away due to insurance coverage issue. At that time I told Dr. Zhou's office about this and they weren't even aware that I couldn't give birth in "THE ONLY" hospital that Dr. Zhou was affiliated with! The WORST was Dr. Zhou didn't seem to care too much about my situation- I am 39 weeks pregnant and there is no hospital I can go to to deliver my baby! All she did was giving me the name of another doctor who can go to my hospital and having me call him to make an appointment BY MYSELF. She knew the doctor and wouldn't even step out of her way to call him and make sure her patient could receive care when the baby could literally come out at any second. However she did give me another option if I couldn't find another doctor that would take me- she proposed that I just show up at the ER of the hospital she's affiliated with when I go into labor. She asked me to lie to the ER people telling them I happened to be in the neighborhood that's why I couldn't use my own insurance and go to my hospital. She also said to make sure that I show up there when the contractions are very bad so I won't get turned away. Dr. Zhou said that's the only way she could deliver my baby, and she seemed pretty sure my insurance would cover for this kind of emergency. We rejected this option because it was a shady move and we didn't feel safe about it. Also we didn't want to be liable for any costs by doing something like this. After 100x calls I did find a doctor that would take me at 39 weeks. And when I went into labor I found out I had to get Tdap shot and COVID test before giving birth- not surprisingly I was never told by Dr. Zhou. I delivered my baby with help from a million times better obgyn who checked my baby's weight at my first/ only visit in his office who also explained with care about the entire process. The new doctor spent/talked with us for about 70 minutes, more than what Dr. Zhou spent with us the entire 8 months! Oh and did I mention that ever since that day we went to Dr. Zhou's office to let her know the insurance situation, she disappeared on us? Never called once to see if we had found another care and if the baby was delivered/ doing okay- as if I never saw her. Dr. Zhou didn't care for us in any way and didn't take the time to be thorough and transparent with the pregnancy. I guess people only go to her because she speaks Chinese but wtf cares if she doesn't care for you or the baby. Avoid like the plague! read more

If there were a zero star, that would have been my choice. Worst OBGYN doctor, or worst doctor I have seen, period. When I told her that my baby had neonatal lupus, she acted as if she has never heard of such a disease. I couldn't believe the questions she asked me! Also when she got my pap smear back, she told me "something is out of range", but when all things considered, she did not believe I have anything to worry about. When I asked to see the results myself, she said "it is all medical stuff, you would not understand it". I have never been treated this way. First impression is always key...My first appointment with them, I was seen one hour late! The receptionist kept apologizing for the doctor about delay. When I finally saw doctor, she did not explain why she saw me so late or apologize. The doctor did pap smear, went though my med history and saw that I'm on blood pressure meds, metformin, and proceeded lecture me like I'm a diabetic. I am pre-diabetic, and she made recommendations about how to cut out my meds by fixing my diet only. I thought this was odd because she's not an Endocrinologist who I am already seeing, but made recommendations anyway. I asked her for referral to a mammogram, that was the whole point of my visit. Next year, she said I won't need to come in for yearly pap smear, but only to come in for HPV. I thought to myself...could this have been done same time as pap smear if she saw me on time, instead of an hour late? Also after I put my clothes back on and getting ready to leave, she decides to check my breathing with stethoscope. Her routine check-up and seeing me as a 'new patient' was a little off kilter, and I left office feeling baffled. read more

I decided to switch doctor because I wanted an OBGYN that are more caring about the patients situation and not intentionally try to raise questionable exam concerns without the thorough investigation, and just like many other reviewers here, she gets her answers BY THE BOOK but doesn't take into account getting to know her patients. Saying my blood work is out of range, so very possible I might get this or get that or I might not be able to keep the baby (can u believe that? Dr. Zhou is the right OBGYN for me. She and I agree on a lot of medical philosophies, and she's been very supportive of all my decisions. That being said, I can see why she isn't for everyone. She has a certain style that might not always be right for you - she's practical, thorough, big believer of to-do lists, and no nonsense. So if you want a warm, friendly, chatty doctor, she may not be your choice. Beneath the academics, she really is an amazing and caring doctor - no one else quite understood the anxiety and panic attacks that I have been suffering through this pregnancy, and she was the only one who really got where I was coming from. I saw several psychiatrists and psychologist/therapists, and none of them pinpointed the source of my anxiety like she could. She took time to talk to me about it, discussing several things for us to try, and explaining the scientific rationale behind the options. Dr. Joy Zhou is book smart. She believes everything in medical text is correct including the BMI chart. I'm 4'10 and weigh 138. The BMI chart will say I would be obese, but I'm a runner and I lift weights. Dr. Joy Zhou said I was too overweight to conceived. She put me on metformin to lose weight, but didn't take it because Metformin is for diabetes, which I do not have. Also, I wax my private areas and when Dr. Zhou saw my vagina for the first time she made comments like she has never seen a shaved vagina before. She asked if it hurt. A week or two after seeing Dr. Joy Zhou and not losing any weight, I got pregnant. It just shows that the doctor diagnosed my issues without doing any blood work shows that she just gets her answers in text books. I did not give her a 1 star because she did take her time with my husband and I and we were not rushed out of her office. But this is the last time I'm going to have my husband refer me to a OBGYN. Dr Zhou has supported me through a pregnancy and recovery recently. I cannot ask for a better doctor to trust myself and my baby with. A lot of scary things can happen during pregnancy, and making the right decisions saves lives. Dr Zhou is also very good with her hands - it's hard to avoid stitches when it comes to having a baby. I also feel she really cared about us and always wanted the best for us. I fully trust all her decisions but she also really listened and respected my preferences. Dr. Zhou was part of a medical office of women OB-Gyn's. Being that was part of a group of doctors, I only saw her a few times during my first pregnancy. When it came time to deliver my son, she was the doctor on duty. My son was 5 weeks early, and it was my first time having a baby, so everything was very scary. Dr. Zhou was great - made me feel as at ease as could be and after his birth, she was very thorough in making sure I was taken care of. She followed up with me the next day and day after that and was also the doctor who circumcised my baby. One of the NICU nurses mentioned that she does the best job in circumcisions! When I got pregnant again, it was a no-brainer to select Dr. Zhou as my primary OB-GYN. She was with me every step of the way from the very beginning, even when she had to call to give me the bad news that at 8 weeks pregnant, I had the early signs of Gestational Diabetes. This pregnancy was much more difficult than the first, starting with the treatment for GD. She explained that while it wasn't conclusive, it would be better in the long run to be treated as if I did have GD and make a lifestyle change that would only benefit me in the long run as well. The rest of the pregnancy progressed as normal as it could be with the GD, and then at 31 weeks, I went to see her for a routine visit. I told her that I suspected I was leaking pee that morning, so she thought she should just test for rupturing just in case. As it turned out, I did rupture and had to be admitted to the hospital that afternoon. What made it worse is that I thought I would get to deliver at the new Mills hospital, but because of my high risk situation, I had to go to CPMC. Dr. Zhou was VERY supportive every step of the way, taking the time to write a handwritten note explaining the circumstances that I was to take with me to Admissions at CPMC. They said they had never seen any doctor ever do such a thing before. She even walked me to my car when I left her office that day, and followed up with me during my very scary stay at CPMC. Thankfully, my 2nd son was born 8 weeks early but very healthy, and healthy to this day. When it was time to schedule my annual exam this year, I was surprised to find out that Dr. Zhou had left the practice I had met her at. The question was - stay where I was comfortable, or follow the doctor who played such an integral part in the pregnancies of both of my kids? I know it's not a deal breaker but it is an annoyance - she did move to one of my least favorite office buildings in the area (all our doctors are in 1720 El Camino), but I didn't let that minor inconvenience stop me. It was a no-brainer to follow her to her new practice. I completely agree with Rachel's review - Dr. Zhou makes you feel like you are her only patient. She takes the time to sit and talk with you about your situation and makes sure to answer any questions you may have. She also remembers things about you - which shows that she takes the time to care about each of her patients as individuals and not just patients. My husband and I cannot describe enough how grateful that we are for Dr. Zhou! We had our first baby on Nov 23 and the C Section surgery was operated smoothly and beautifully by Dr. Zhou. In fact, I can get up by myself and walk around the next day of the surgery. It is like a magic! I first went to Dr. Zhou's office in April when I just found I was pregnant. I did a lot homework on internet before I finally chose Dr. Zhou as my OB. I had a terrible experience with Kaiser last year and had a miscarriage. I decided to be more responsible for myself and the baby this time. It proves that I made a correct decision by finding Dr. Zhou. Dr. Zhou is the best OBG doctor that I have ever met. With her experience, knowledge, and skills, she has helped me overcome all of the difficulties and complicated conditions that occurred in my pregnancy. I developed gestational diabetes during the pregnancy and my uterus and cervix are unusually located, comparing to many other pregnant women. All of these conditions have made the delivery and the surgery a big challenge to my OB. On top of these implications, during the visit of the 37th week, Dr. Zhou found that the baby was in transverse lie, which is in conflict with the result of the ultrasound that I had done at the 36th week. To ensure that my situation has comprehensive and accurate diagnosis, Dr. Zhou sent me to a different medical center for another ultrasound that simply confirmed that her judgement is absolutely correct. Dr. Zhou then made a sound plan for the surgery and communicated the entire procedure with me in great details. The day that I was sent to the surgery room, I saw the big smile on Dr. Zhou's face and felt the warmth of her hug. I knew that both our baby and me are in the trusted hand and we would be good and safe. As expected, everything went well although it was a very challenging surgery. Every time that I am looking at our baby's face, I feel we are blessed to have Dr. Zhou as our doctor and friend of our family. She is definitely the best of the best OBG doctors in the Bay Area. On the Thanksgiving day, we just cannot thank her enough for her sincerity, professionalism, and care during my pregnancy and delivery. I just got out of my very first visit. Her admin team is warm, friendly, and helpful, the office has easy parking and it was easy to get to. Most of all I am impress with Dr. Joy herself. She is easy going but detailed in her explanations. she has great bedside manners and was patient and answered all my questions with respect and care. She made me feel like I am going to be taken cared of instead of treating me like I am "just another patient." Dr. Joy Zhou is great. I came to her twice while in California on training for my job. I was able to get in with short notice (emergency appointment fee of $85 the first time) + copay. I came back 9 days later and the appointment was free, not even charged a copay. She made me feel very comfortable about the topics we discussed...she is so sweet and cute and extremely extremely comforting. I cant stress the word "comforting" enough. It's so hard to find a good gynecologist, you women know what I'm talking about, but this was a really good experience for me, she was thorough and very fast, and as painless as an appt like this can be. I was definitely not looking forward to this appt, but next time around, I won't be so anxious about it. She also listened well and made me feel at ease. Dr Zhou is the best! She really cares for her patients from beginning to end of pregnancy. She takes the time to explain everything in detail and answer questions at each appointment. But the best part is that Dr Zhou sees you for each appointment and has a very high probability of delivering your baby when the time comes. Absolutely wonderful! She is very nice, patient and knowledgeable! I delivered my baby 2 months ago (naturally delivery) and today I had postpartum visit, everything is fine. During the pregnancy, Dr Joy takes good care of me and baby with her knowledge and experience, I remember my placenta was showing as not normal according to a test, she looked at the result and told me it's fine, and it turned out fine.I don't even think it twice. (not like other physicians may told you the bad news and you would freak out... it's bad to freak out especially during the pregnancy). Excellent OBGYN I've ever met. I am so lucky to have her to help me deliver my two babies. I came from mainland,China. When I first got pregnant in 2011 ,my husband and I were living in Mountain View. Since it was our first baby, we were very nervous about everything. We looked everywhere trying to find a good OB doctor. We went to a very old OB doctor, but she doesn't speak Mandarin.Finally we found Dr.zhou. We were in love with her and her assistant immediately .They speak fluent Chinese and English and the most important thing was Dr. zhou was so tender and considerable. She answered every question we had and gave us accurate instructions.My first son was 3.5 Kg when he was born and very healthy. This year we moved to Fremont and were expecting our second baby in August .It is very far from our new place to Dr. zhou's office, so we tried again to find another OB doctor in Fremont. But the reality was so disappointing. We went to a young OB doctor in Fremont,who speaks Chinese, but we found she was so unprofessional. Finally we decided to go back to Dr. zhou and despite the long distance. We wanted our baby to be safe and healthy. My second pregnancy was so smooth with Dr. zhou's helping. Dr. Joy Zhou was my OB for my 2nd pregnancy, and I am very grateful and extremely happy that I had Dr. Zhou deliver my 2nd baby last December (2015). I went with a different OB for my first pregnancy, and had traumatic experiences through labor. My postpartum recovery was so long and painful. When I found out that I was pregnant with my 2nd child 9 months after my first baby was born, I was very nervous and vowed to find an OB that is caring, knowledgable, skillful, and above all, trust-worthy.
