I decided to check out a different market in the Glendale/Burbank area. There are not a whole lot of choices in the area. Jons Market on Glenoaks is more of an international grocery store with a big focus on Armenian and European products. They have a great variety of produce, nuts, bread, and specialty items you don't see in standard markets. Prices are definitely on the higher side though, especially for meat. Worth visiting if you're looking for harder to find item. There is also a hot section with yummy looking ready to serve food. Be ready to bust open your piggy bank and spend a lot more here on some items. read more

Underrated Supermarket. JONS (not VONS) has a nice selection of Eastern European, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean products/groceries. Fine selection of imported deli meats, cheeses, and specialty items. They have a huge selection of spices and a large variety of dried products: nuts, dried fruits, whole grain buckwheat, rice, legumes, flours for baking/cooking. The frozen section has filo, puff pastry, pizza dough, samosas, pelmeni; imported and artisan ice-creams. The list goes on! Good value on imported spirits, beer, and wine. Jons is great for "adult beverage" runs! $17 bucks for Grey Goose Vodka! The produce section could be better; it's not great. However, their Persian cucumbers and Dashti tomatoes are a top seller at any Jons location. Their meat department is not bad. Great price on pork, chicken, lamb. Their beef selection is decent. The meat department guy is friendly and happy to assist. The only thing I don't like about JONS are that domestic American products are marked up higher priced than your local national chain supermarkets. A lot of changes in this store since last time I have been here. They added Market Grill like other Jons which is perfect to grab a quick lunch after shopping. They had a variety of pastries in bakery department. They have huge selection of international items which you can't find in other stores. The down side of this store is that most of the American products are expensive in store. This is for the grill part of Jons that makes fresh flatbread--I believe it's called Sangak bread based on a previous post. The sign says they are open until 6pm. I went there 5:45p and the Hispanic girl told me "no more," as she was wrapping some freshly baked Sangak for no one since I was the only one there. 10 seconds later another customer comes and she denied him too. Elderly shopper aware!! Please speak with your elderly parents who shop at John's and make sure they do not get scammed or get over charged for reusable bags. My elderly father was charged for 222 reusable bags totaling $44.40!!!! When he was given 2 for his groceries. When he tried to show his receipt to the MANAGER to ask that his total wasn't right they looked at it. Underlined a few things and said no you are clear everything is correct YET THEY FAILED TO UNDERLINE THE 222 bags used for 15 items. When speaking with the manager, he said it's the shoppers responsibility, not ours to catch things like this. I just had the rudest cashier experience. I went to self check out at 7:10am. There another lady doing self check out and we the "wait for assistance" light and message went off for both of us twice. The lady next to me asked the only cashier who also happened to be the only employee at the front for help. The cashier was very snappy and told the lady to go check out at the regular register but the lady had already rang up all her stuff she just needed to pay. So the cashier fixed her self checkout. Mine gave the alert after the first item out of the 3. The cashier fixed mine before going back to her register. After I rang up the 3rd item it gave the "wait for assistance" message and light. I went to the register to tell her I got an error and she rudely said "what do want me to do. I can't help you I'm here at the register." She did have a customer, which I understand. So I asked "okay who can I ask" (since there was no one around she then said "idk what you want to do" then she picked up the intercom phone for help. And she hung it up with an attitude. The store is great. This review is about their hot food serving area called Market Grill. No professionalism or customer service at all. Very rude and entitled. Have been here a few times and not once have I received a satisfactory service. And don't ask for anything extra because they will charge. The Market Grill at the Jons on Sepulveda has much better service. They give extra Sangak when you order their food and don't charge if you ask for extra dressing. The Market Grill does not have a separate page so this is for them & not Jons. Our family has been purchasing sangak from that market for years now. Every time we ask for extra sesame seeds & pay the extra fee knowing we have to wait longer as it is customized with no problem at all. I was first in line today & approached the counter to let them know of the customization as always so they can bake it at their convenience. I didn't mind waiting & shopping while they baked the bread. The bread guy told me to go back & wait in line not letting me speak so I did. When the miserable Persian dude called me over to pay I asked him for extra sesame seeds & he got mad that I hadn't told them earlier. I explained to him what had happened & he said he doesn't care & I need to just buy a regular one & go about my business. Holding myself as to not be disrespectful I calmly mentioned I don't mind waiting & he agreed to sell me two breads with extra sesame seeds. He could have just left it there but nope he went on to talk about how customers like me are the ones that make him want to explode + quit (mind you he is one of the owners) & they are tired + calling my communication with him "animalistic". I let it go & went to buy a couple of items from Jons. In the meantime I asked for the manager of the store & explained what had happened which he politely apologized for & mentioned that I am one of many who complains about them but his hands are tied as they are a separate entity. The miserable Persian seller was staring at us with a long line in front of him throughout my conversation with the manager. After my conversation I went to pick up the bread which was ready instead he takes money out of the register, hands it to me & tells me to have a nice day + another disgusting word in Farsi which I can not repeat as it is extremely inappropriate. Love shopping at this Jons when in the area. It's one of the nicer ones and carries a lot of international items. The store is big and clean. I like the deli department which carries variety of hams, salami, turkey and many cheese options to chose from. They have imported olives with affordable prices. Sicilian green olives is a must at every trip to Jons. Lots of imported items from Armenia as well. Their produce department is always full of reasonably priced items. The prices on canned, prepackaged foods are on a higher side but you can always get those someplace else. This location also has Mediterranean food station. They sell kebabs and more. read more

Jon's Market Grill was a great idea. A few weeks ago, I tried the kebab for lunch. They serve one spicy grilled kebab on rice with salad, grilled tomato & green pepper. I think of it as the ethnic version of gluten-free burger lunch. Today, I opted for the Hawaiian chicken skewer which came with a rice choice & vegetable choice. I hearted dill rice with creamed spinach. The serving was plentiful. You can always get just the skewer(s) versus a full meal. Jon's had dolmas; meat and vegan. Also, they make semolina dessert. You can always go for a gyro or shawarma pita. The choices are enough. The Market Grill appeared to be Armenian mixed with Mediterranean. They have a traditional deli counter that's pure American for roasted chicken, deli meats, cold salads and cheeses. Jon's carries groceries like normal. You can get everything there... This store doesn't care about health and safety at all. Today I went to Jon's to try to buy fresh sangak bread (Persian bread). I saw the bakers cleaning the oven where they were baking the bread using a dirty broom and scrubbing with some type of white liquid chemical. As the bakers were done with the broom they placed the broom on the bare floor where they are stepping with their dirty shoes. I asked the manager of the department what kind of chemical they are using to clean the oven he told me, " I don't know, some type of chemical safe for human." How can I trust the person who is to be supervising the bakery department when he cannot even tell me the name of the cleaning chemicals they are using. I like going to this store because of fresh vegetables and fruits. I also like buying meat here because of their good quality. I'd been here so many times but never had any interaction with the employees. I'm that typical customer who just grab, pay and go. Today wasn't one of those days. I usually avoid using public restrooms and never used one here. However, I probably drank too much coffee that I felt I needed to use one today. By now we know that you don't go to Jons for their excellent customer service, but what bothered me was that an older lady, with an obvious wrist issue asked, very kindly, for the cashier to help her with putting in heavy mandarins in a bag and all the cashier (Elizabeth) did was give her a dirty look and throw in the produce, leaving most of it out, I had to help her with the rest! she looked like she was ready to murder anyone who spoke with her...Treatment like that, especially towards the elderly is unacceptable! probably our last visit there! read more
