This place knocks my socks off every time. Here's why. Bahn-mi: Of course they are excellent - i have yet to find another place with the variety Joju offers. I love the option to add a fried egg to any sandwich (cooked to your liking too!). Fries: It should be a sin to not go for one of the loaded fries. Both the bahn-mi fries and kimchi fries are incredible. Super spicy and super addictive. Chicken wings: I know. You would not expect the quality of wings from a bahn-mi shop to be so freaking awesome but they got it. Each wing is a substantial size, and the perfect balance of a crispy exterior and a juicy and succulent meat inside. Can't beat the price either. Drinks: wash everything down with some Vietnamese ice coffee and your life is complete. OR SO I THOUGHT until I tried the FROZEN Vietnamese ice coffee! Damn Joju. As soon as I walked in, I took a big wiff of the pickled carrots-seasoned meat air and knew that I was not going to escape from this place without ordering a sandwich. First thoughts: The chicken was fall-of-the-bone tender and well seasoned. I had a huge appreciation for this. I never had a chicken sandwich, under 6 dollars that didn't taste like blubber, salt and bread. The chiller was something else. I'm a juice fiend and the Strawberry JoJu Chiller hit the spot on all levels on a day that was about 100 degrees. The bitterness of the green tea balanced the sweetness of the strawberry and the mango stars was a nice treat when it appeared in my mouth (sorry, that's what she said). I took off a star because I didn't like the way my sandwich was prepared. They jammed the pickled veggies into the sandwich, pushing the chicken into the far crevices of the bread so when I took a bite, it was mostly veggie with a little bit of chicken. Came on a Friday afternoon for their food with friends. It's a small restaurant but their food is packed with flavor. There is a tight seating area and colorful menus all over the walls. The service was quick and friendly. It didn't take long for my order to arrive. For the food, I had the #4 (beef bulgogi) and I tried #2 (lemongrass chicken) and #6 (kakuni pork belly). All three were full of their own flavor. Each bite had me wanting more. I personally like the beef bulgogi a lot. It was very juicy. To me it was comfort food. You get the sourness from the pickles vegetables, the salty, umami flavor from the beef bulgogi, and the fresh crunchiness from the cilantro and toasted bread. None of the flavors overpowered the other. It was a well put sandwich with flavors that balanced out well. I also tried the banh mi fries. It was interesting dish as I've never had pickled vegetables with cheese. The bottom layer are these golden crispy fries. Then it's drizzled with cheese and placed on top is the pickled carrots along with some freshly chopped cilantro and jalapenos. At the very top (if you like) is a runny egg. It's like a deconstructed banh mi sandwhich on a plate. You mix all of that together and you get a piece of heaven. For my drink, I had their mango lychee mojito. My goodness.. it was literally stimulating my senses. It was in bright yellow with a lemon and some basil leaves in it. Just looking at it makes you more awake. After reading a splendor of reviews from satisfied consumers, I figured I would go out of my way to try this place out. The result? Disappointed and cheated. Coming from TX, I've built a pretty good palette when it comes to vietnamese food. The banh mi, the pho, the dumplings, etc. you name it. So here's why I was left unimpressed: Pork Belly Banh Mi - an overwhelming amount of fat versus meat in the sandwich; although the baguette was perfectly crispy, the contents of the sandwich overshadowed its flaky goodness. Vegetables were alright. Loaded Joju Fries - topped with banh mi toppings and a fried egg; fries were very nice and crispy but the issue was that it was flavorless. Yes, the toppings and special sauce were there to add flavor but it wasn't enough to help make up for the tastelessness of the fries. If you get it, share it. It's a good $6 for an order. Vietnamese iced coffee - biggest letdown. It was so watered down! The flavor of the coffee barely came thru. I threw it away after a couple of sips. I would also recommend getting a fried egg in your banh mi, it's free if you check in on Yelp and Foursquare. The runny egg yolk just makes it that more indulgent. So I used to love coming here everytime I am in the city, but my last visit here was by far disappointing. The food was so salty, I ordered the beef bulgogi sandwich and it felt like the beef was a bunch of salt. Furthermore, the person who was taking my order was so so rude. She acted as if I didn't deserve to be served, and when I asked for a water cup, she didn't even respond and just proceeded to get the water for me in a manner that resembles a little child fussing about doing something that they didn't want to do. It is unfortunate that I won't be returning, because there are a lot more places to eat in this city where I am not treated with such an attitude. JOJU I've been wanting to try for a while now and finally got the chance to! I think it's one of the best Banh Mi places in NY. I got the lemon grass chicken and it was off the hook delicious and bursting with colorful flavors! My friend got a regular with a runny egg - messy but delicious! If you check in you get a free egg with your sandwich and I definitely recommend it! We also tried the kimchi fries (real yummy!) and also the fried wings (would not recommend). There's a few different types of Banh Mi on the menu and I know i'll be back for more. I can guarantee you this is a place that people love to come back to and that's definitely why I'm giving it 5 stars. It's a small but brightly lit place - I wouldn't recommend going with a large group - but the service is great and the food is absolutely delectable. JoJu ingeniously reinvented the Banh Mi in so many different ways. They incorporated the traditional Vietnamese Banh Mi with flavors that people are familiar with but in a sandwich. The Bulgogi Bomb Me is filled with Korean bulgogi, kimchi, pickled daikon radish and carrots, fried egg, jalapenos, spicy mayo in between a toasted french baguette. The flavors are absolutely amazing. Just add a little Sriracha and your belly will be thanking you. The Kakuni Pork Belly is also another one of my favorites. The pork belly is slowly braised so it becomes soft and tender. The end result is a melt in your mouth, fatty piece of pork that is to die for. The Lemongrass Chicken is also good but it is definitely not as flavorful as the Bulgogi or Kakuni. Being asian one would think that I've tried all kinds of asian foods. I can surely attest that I haven't and this was my first attempt at a Bahn Mi. I went with a skilled artisan (my cousin) and my significant other who is not of the asian persuasion and rather a nubie to foods in general. We ordered a chicken bahn mi and a pork roll bahn mi and some spring rolls and a summer roll. The summer roll wasnt bad. The spring roll wasnt bad either. The chicken bahn mi is better than the pork roll bahn mi. My skilled artisan cousin claims the pork roll bahn mi is better than the chicken but despite my asian-ness I have difficulty with the pork roll texture since its almost spam and/or deli ham wrapped into one. Nearly all the customers are asian except for those non asian folks that are accompanied by asian customers. Even the police officers who came in for lunch were asian. Great prices and happy there's a viet sandwich place in Queens! !! I especially love their caramel pork sandwich. It doesn't taste like caramel like candy. I was less thrilled with the pork belly sandwich. The pork itself was nice and super tender, I just didn't think they did much to flavor it. I'd also skip the wings with the garlic soy glaze. I once had this killer bahn mi in Houston inside of what can only be one of the biggest Vietnamese supermarkets in the US. I've yet to taste a bahn mi as good as that in NY but I get excited whenever I hear of a good bahn mi place. Based on the high ratings I decided to give JoJu a try. On the upside, they've done a good job on the bread. Crunchy and flaky on the outside and soft on the inside. They also pre-cut them in half and pack each individually in a bag making it easier to share. Came here with my wife and ordered: #1 Classic - She said good flavors but the headcheese & ham were cut too thick for her liking. He said yum. #3 BBQ Pork - She said the pork was mealy and the flavors didn't mesh as well compared to the #1. He said yum. Soy Garlic Glazed Crispy Chicken Wings - She said too much breading and a tad on the salty side. He said yum. 3 stars from her and 4 from me. The food is great as well, as the balance between the meat in the sandwiches and the daikon and herbs help cut through the fat and salt. However, do not expect an authentic experience when ordering the regular bahn mi. Although the sandwiches are good, they are definitely different and feels more americanized than I would prefer. I had the "green eggs and ham" which was the Vietnamese ham, TWO eggs and green sauce. They were nice and made mine not too spicy. The only thing is that I should have had the eggs cooked "runny". I asked for medium thinking it was going to be like over-easy but it was pretty much fully cooked. Joju is one of my all time favorite places to get banh mi from. I normally go for the bbq pork one but all of the other options, like their bulgogi banh mi, are really good. I highly recommend trying their kimchi fries as well! The price is decent and you'll definitely be satisfied with your meal. The only downside to this location is that it's a tad bit small. If you like sandwiches in general and is currently near the Elmhurst area? Come here! The vietnamese sandwiches are decently priced and turnaround time is quick. I have been here a few times already and tried different banh mis and they are all good. My favorite sandwich so far is the lemongrass chicken sandwich. They use chicken thighs so it's juicy and complimentary to the lightly pickled carrots. On top of having good filling ingredients, the bread is also crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, a requirement of any good vietnamese sandwich.
