We've taken our dogs here for years. Dr Johnson saved our little Jazzys life. Cares very much about them, wouldn't take them anywhere else

Local friends please beware of Colonial Heights Animal Hospital…read more A little history of our relationship with them. We have been going to them for 2 years and have had 5 dogs + a litter of puppies and 3 cats in their care. Our experience was fantastic up until about 6 weeks ago. This review will be regarding our most recent interaction with them and I will be making a follow up review about what we went through with our other French Bulldog and his eye recently. On Tuesday morning I noticed that our French Bulldog was spitting up blood and little bits of something. I asked my husband if he had given them bones and he said yes. He had just picked our steer up from the butcher on Monday and did what we have done many times and treated our Frenchies with a raw beef bone. Our Frenchie stopped spitting up throughout Tuesday and ate both breakfast and dinner perfectly fine. No change in behavior or bowel movements. On Wednesday morning I went to let him out of his crate and noticed that sometime in the night he had spit up a bit more bright red blood. I immediately consulted with his breeder and she recommended I get an X-ray just to be on the safe side. I was reluctant to contact Colonial Heights after what we went through with our other Frenchie and his eye injury but the vet that fixed him up after Colonial Heights botched surgeries is a 35 minute drive from us. So I called Colonial Heights at 0953. I was told to bring him in right away to get an X-ray. So I did. On our way home from dropping him off at 1032 I received a call from their tech stating that he was being combative (completely unlike him) and would need to be sedated to have the X-ray done. Anyone who has Frenchies knows that sedation is a big deal. So after asking what exactly that would entail and how much it would cost ($58) I agreed. It would just be an intramuscular injection that would be quickly reversed once the X-ray was done. I waited and waited with no word. At 1400 I text my husband and asked why I hadn't heard from the vet. He said why don't you give them a call. So I did at 1406. I was told put on hold and then told that the doctor would be giving me a call. Finally at 1450 Dr Trigg called me to inform me that our dog had a very large sharp bone lodged in his stomach that would need to be surgically removed. She didn't believe he would be able to pass it on his own and if he did it would puncture his bowel. BUTTTTTTT THEY COULDN'T DO THE SURGERY until the following day! I would need to take him to the emergency vet. Yes, you read that correctly. DR. TRIGG WAITED APPROXIMATELY 4 HOURS TO CALL ME WITH RESULTS. When I asked why she waited so long to call me she said that they only had two doctors there. Im confused why only having two doctors prevented her from picking up the phone in a timely manner? Why when I called in the morning was I told to bring him right in for an X-ray if there wasn't anyone there to relay the results? I told Dr Trigg I would be on my way to pick up him up. As soon as I hung up I called Ferguson Animal Hospital in Bristol and they said to bring him immediately in. When I arrived to Colonial Heights to pick up our dog I was met with a $346.36 bill. $60 for a medical exam (I never saw a vet) $105.49 for sedation-intramuscular $232.49 for an X-ray (that I didn't get results from for 4 hours) and $8.38 got medical waster disposal fee. (I was given a $60 credit for some points I had (never heard of points and was never told about them and still don't know what they are). I did call while I was waiting for our Frenchie to get out of surgery to tell them that I was told over the phone that the sedation would only be $58. I was asked if I wanted the difference as a credit on my account and I said "Absolutely not! I won't be back." I was refunded part of the difference on my debit card. I got to Ferguson Animal Hospital at 1550 and they had him in surgery by 1600 and out by 1700. All of that to say.. I am so so so thankful that my husband told me to call when I did. Had I waited any longer I would have had to go to our local emergency vet and his surgery would have easily been $7000+. Ferguson Animal Hospital is the real MVP! Special thanks to Dr Hubbard for being willing to take on our Frenchie case at 1600 when their hospital closes at 1730. Dr Hubbard was so straight forward empathetic and understanding. Highly highly recommend.

Recently used Fort Henry Animal Hospital for a growth removal on our Poms lip, They did that…read moresuccessfully and that is where our pleasure ends. Dog developed a cough and progressively got worse. They declined to see her when she was breathing like a freight train, supposedly they were booked up. I stated I was going to seek alternate care elsewhere, which we did . Fort Henry vet called and stated she would be happy to consulate with new vet, when vet called for to inquire for already run test results, she was told Lily was not a patient there. I guess I can look for a refund for all the over a thousand dollars of tests done at a mystical hospital. Ha. New vet has bent over backwards to help Lilly and has alreasdy seen her numerous times. We had never used the new vet before but we certainly will from now on. Not only did Fort Henry animal hospital lose one patint, they have lost 3 . We are a multi dog family. Mt. Carmel is really not that far away (new vet) .

The other came back with all of her medication left when there should not have been any left. One dog smelled like throw up and the other had poop on her neck when I picked them up. While treating one dog for an ear infection, they prescribed medication to be used as double the manufacturer's recommendations and for twice as long. This medication is known to cause deafness when used for prolonged periods according to the package insert. This was not safe to use the way it was prescribed. I was charged for services that were not even provided or requested on my last visit. And they want to do shots and testing every 6 months while most vets do these same tests and shots yearly. Very shady and crooked office. Will never set foot in there again.
