I called Fred about intermittent leak one tire. I was 45 minutes away; said I could be there next…read moreday. Fred said that would work. He was working on another car when I arrived but would be finished in 20-30mins. Sure enough he got me in the bay in 30 min. Found the a nail that was the problem, fixed it, and had it out of the bay 15min or less. He charged what seemed to be too little but said that was the usual rate. Fred couldn't have been any nicer. I highly recommend taking your auto issues to Fred Swan's Garage in Galeton.

Obviously, not anyone picked up the phone on a Sunday afternoon, except for the Swan's Garage. The incredibly kind Mr. Fred Swan who happened to be at the shop, initially offered to come and take a look at my car the next morning, and when he found out that I have AAA membership so he instructed me to have the car towed to his shop right away. First thing Monday morning he ran a diagnostic and determined that my car need a new starter but he does not carry starters for a foreign car. He then called around to see if other shops carry the part before he called me, explained the situation, and suggested several options for me. In addition, he helped to call the closest dealership, provided me with contact information to local towing companies. When I finally arrived at his garage, I found that his lot was full of cars waiting for repairs. I was deeply moved by his genuine kind-heartedness to assist a traveler from another state, understanding the urgency of my situation, gave me priority as I needed to leave PA as soon as I could to catch a flight. All the work he did for me, he did not take advantage of my situation and would not charge a dime. He is a true Good Samaritan!

Anyway, I explained to them several times that I was looking at trade in value and that I had a couple of offers from carmax and nerdwallet. The lady I spoke to said that they usually (key word) do better than them. I figured, what the heck, they are only an hour away, why not. Now, I was brutally honest about rating my truck, actual mileage, scratches, as well as the accessories. Well, they lowballed me by $3000.00 and made it sound like they were being very generous and magnanimous about the whole deal. I told him he was low and thanked him for his time. He was a bit taken aback about that. Asked me if I wanted his estimate, said I could keep it or even throw it in his face if I wanted to. Okay, I did kinda chuckle over that. Obviously, he has done this before with limited success. As I left, he tried to engage and explain his position, I just smiled and left. The lady I originally spoke to sent me a half-hearted apology email that made me chuckle, too. Update: I sold my truck to Driveway.com for $25,150. Blaise Alexander offered to go as high as $22,000 (after telling me it was only worth $21,000 and change). Even though I was only asking for trade-in value, I was prepared to take $24,000 when I went there. Lucky for me, they low balled me. I guess I owe them a thank you.
