Minus one star for the decor. May 31st, 2018 was our second visit to John's. We were there a couple of years ago and the only thing I could remember was the delicious (and enormous) crab cake that we waited a very long time to get! But, it was worth the wait and definitely something I was dying to try again this second visit. We came in for our wedding anniversary - it's rare that we get a date night without our kiddos (7 & 4) so we wanted to take advantage. Location: easy to get to, parking is pretty much everywhere. And if you have time, the views are amazing from 6th street when a ferry is coming in. Atmosphere: this was a little disappointing. it's very outdated, very bland. definitely doesn't match the food. the food is so incredible and upscale that the atmosphere throws you off a little - but being that my wife and I were the youngest patrons by 20 years the decor is self-explanatory. Service: the waiter we had was so charming. he looked us in the eye when he spoke, was polite and was checking on us constantly. he talked to us about the food, and the wine. It was only a tad bit disappointing that we stood in the doorway for over 4 minutes before anyone acknowledged us. And we saw 2 servers and a hostess walk by a number of times. Food: the crab cake - once again - did not disappoint. I imagined that it might not live up to my expectations since I had been romanticising it for a couple of years, but it did. it was just as I remembered - fluffy, tasty, delicious. what can I say about the other food items? Cooked, and plated to perfection. I had the special which happened to be King Salmon which was topped with pesto and pine nuts, add in the seasonal veggies and noodles - delicious. My wife had the filet with Roquefort sauce and grilled onions. the filet was PERFECT, cut like butter and that first bite was more of a visceral experience, one that I enjoyed immensely. Desert: the chocolate mousse. I LOVE chocolate mousse. If it shows up on the menu (and creme brulee) I order it. I have to... and I was not disappointed! So good... it was best paired with the fresh strawberry. Love love this place! Wine selection is pretty exhaustive I thought... check this place out! read more

OMG....you must, and I mean must eat the Crab cake. There is no other crab cake like it...the best! The seafood linguine was out of this world. The scallops in it were large and cooked perfectly, filled with Dungeness crab and shrimp (prawns) and a sauce to die for. Oh, and the mushrooms in the seafood linguine were phenomenal...they could sell these as a side and I would be all over it. Its worth saying again, you must try the crab cake. We were pretty disappointed. I read all the great reviews so am going to guess this place had an off night or my expectations are too high or the bad reviews are being removed. It is clean and cute and has a nice menu. Our server was nice enough but it was not very great. The place wasn't packed and there were other servers so I can't imagine he was overwhelmed. The food took 45 minutes to come out and then our steaks weren't done right. For the price point it was pretty underwhelming honestly. The highlight was the blueberry crumble. Lacy and Christine have gone far above and beyond to make us feel as special as the day we got married this past Saturday! They are so loving and caring! They truly made us feel at home and that we were the most important people! Went here on a Wednesday night with my husband for date night. Our waitress was very attentive the entire time. Checked in on yelp and got the free polenta appetizer. That was just ok for us. My husband ordered the filet mignon with the the Roquefort sauce. He said his dish was outstanding. I had the pan seared chicken which I thought was delicious as well. Sat at the bar for Happy Hour. Staff were friendly and attentive. House white ($5) was perfect and looking at the wine list you can tell a lot of thought went into selection. Ordered crab cakes and calamari. Crab cake was fist size and tasty, slightly more fluffy in texture than a regular crabcake, but not much binder. I would definitely order it again. I'm here in Mukilteo on a business trip and was craving a steak. This place was listed as a steak house, but it's more of a bistro. The staff is very friendly and professional. I ordered the NY steak grilled with maitre de butter and mushroom sauce... cooked to perfection (medium as requested). I was surprised that only 4 tables were filled (including me). We tried Johns solely based on location and Yelp reviews. The ambiance was wonderful and we enjoyed, for the most part, our visit. The seafood linguine was average at best, just not real exciting. The strip steak was good, tender and cooked as ordered. The service was attentive enough but got off to a rocky start when the server didn't know how to handle my request for a small house salad instead of potatoes with my steak. She made me feel very uncomfortable as she made a big deal out of simple request. I got my salad and it was fine but it was an issue as she stated "I can get it for you but it's gotta be really small". Geeze... I'm sorry! I certainly don't want you to lose any money giving me some lettuce! Certainly I'm not the 1st person to not want the carbs in the potatoes. read more

RE: Customer Service by one of the owners On 6 October 2016, we had a very nice dining experience at John's Grill for the first time. On a repeat visit the next day, we were directed to a table by the swinging kitchen door in an almost empty dining room around 5:30 PM. Appearing to take our order, the co-owner stated that she had just let a server go. After dinner, my wife had to flag down another server to take our dessert menu. It appeared clear that we were being overlooked or they were too short staffed to accommodate the influx of customers? After a very long wait, I finally got up to find the greeter in order to pay the bill. I had to maneuver near the entrance where additional chairs were being added in the walkway to facilitate a large party at a table almost in front of the entry. I told the greeter that he failed to acknowledge several attempts to flag him down. The owner's wife then brought the bill and I said that we were not happy with the service. She then did an about face and walked away. It appears that she made a decision to "ignore" us without any resolution. The food was expensive but OK and needed seasoning. My wife did not complain even though her overdone filet mignon had the taste of gristle. The slow service combined with a "dismissive attitude" by the owner was unfortunately the high point of this $$$ dining experience. As we exited the restaurant, the owner's wife neither acknowledged nor thanked us for coming again. It was quite surprising that a clear fire path to the exit was partially blocked by the extra seating. I regret that we left a tip at all. I would not consider this establishment again. read more

Delicious, tumbling tastes roll off your tongue and reluctantly down your throat, which makes one despair of the meal ending. Their fish are the best. Salmon, crusted and grilled over a perfect flame and a wine to pair. This restaurant doesn't have a view but for one down the street but the atmosphere was homely and one didn't detract from the meal. The meal was a bit pricey but we'll worth it. Sure, not a lot of places to compare it to as not many places even offer it, but I am overweight and I didn't get that way eating bad food. This family-owned restaurant is just a couple of miles from my home and although I'm not a regular, I've dined here at least 20 times since 2006 as it's good place for a nicer business dinner with a few guests. The distance to where I work and live and convenient parking are big factors. They bill themselves as a steak and seafood restaurant but there are far fewer seafood choices and most of them are shrimp, scallop, or squid. It's too bad because we have so much good seafood here year round. There are occasional seafood specials but in my experience they are almost always shellfish. (If you want fish, go down the hill a couple blocks to Ivar's.) The food at John's Grill is good quality and the chef/owner does a pretty good, consistent job. The meals are straightforward and generally well-prepared. It can be hard to find something light on the menu and butter is heavily used. It's usually delicious but more standard fish items and lighter sides would be nice additions to the menu. The service can be excellent but the other owner Lisa who also serves seems to have frequent bad days and it shows in her service. They have had a lot of turnover through the years and I have had great service there but if Lisa is waiting tables sometimes it can really affect your experience negatively. This is my rationale for 3 stars. Overall, this is a good restaurant. Good quality, fairly expensive but when when everything is working well, you may have a 4-star experience (for Mukilteo). read more

I was looking for a nice restaurant to take my partner for their birthday to get a good steak and found Johns Grill online and figured I'd take the gamble in something new. We were not disappointed! It's a small and intimate restaurant that feels classy but comfortable. They were obviously understaffed but handled it gracefully and it didn't affect the speed or quality of our dishes. We got a salad and fried calamari as appetizers and each got a steak entree. Everything was incredible! The steaks were cooked perfectly, the potatoes and veggies were great and nothing was too oily which I always appreciate! The staff was able to be attentive even tho they were spread thin and the effort didn't go unnoticed. It's a challenging time to go out for a fine dining experience during the holidays/a pandemic and I appreciate the staffs hard work and the incredible food! This is a quaint little restaurant in Mukilteo where I live. It seems like a good place to bring a date. Had the standard utensil set up, dinner fork, salad fork, dinner knife, and soup spoon, and cloth lap napkin. I ordered the 14oz New York Steak topped with caramelized onions and Roquefort dressing. This comes with "potato du'jour and seasonal vegetables". The steak came to me perfectly cooked to my order. It tasted very good, though there were the occasionally chewy bit which was a put off. Steak didn't seem aged at all, though they never claimed that it was, this was a $33 entree, so in my opinion this wasn't a $33 steak. The vegetables were not anything to write home about either, they did seem fresh, and the potatoes seemed like they were missing something, I tend to not like naked potatoes. The only thing on them was salt and pepper. Both were very small portions. There was a salad fork in the setting, so a small simple salad with a home made dressing would have made me feel better about spending $33 on it. For desert I had a "blueberry crisp" with vanilla ice cream. Unfortunately they really fell down here. First off it was nearly $8, secondly there wasn't anything crisp about this, it reminded me of what happens when you reheat a crisp in a microwave. It was rather soggy, and the nuts that were in the topping came out chewy, which made me guess they reheated this in a microwave. Not worth $8. Service was good, I did have to ask the first time for a refill on my ice tea, but after that it was always full. read more

We made a reservation, but an emergency came up and we weren't sure if we could make it at first, so we cancelled it...ended up showing around the same time and although they were busy, they made it their priority to help us get a good seat :) The food was DELICIOUS! My bf and I came here for our anniversary and we got the crab cake to share as an appetizer and it was amazing! crispy on the outside, and filled with real-fresh crab. It was huge too! I got the beef stroganoff for my entree, and it was probably the best stroganoff I've ever had. The meat was SOO incredibly tender and the sauce was too die for. Wow My hubby took me here the day after Valentine's and we were not disappointed! This was our first time here and we will be back! The bread was a fabulous tasty surprise, organic and made fresh in Seattle! Then we started with a cup of soup. My hubby chose the house chowder and I had the daily flavor which was a sweet potato surprise! We've never tasted anything so wonderful. We're told John makes everything from scratch including all his broth bases(you can tell). Then we had their Seafood Linguini which was the first we've seen with a combination of huge prawns, scallops and crab. Truly outstanding and delicious! Dinner was good when we visited John's Grill last night, though overpriced. Our waitress was friendly...UNTIL we discovered that my credit card was inadvertently swapped with another patron's, and we had to return to the restaurant to get the mix-up straightened out. The waitress, (who happens to be John's wife), huffed around and treated us as if she was too busy to address the problem. Her annoyed "apology" made us feel like our presence was a HUGE bother. The manner in which she snapped at two of the other employees while she was "so stressed she could barely breathe" was super uncomfortable to witness. When I asked if I could see the slip to make sure the charges on my card were for the dinner we actually had, she insisted that our meal was charged to the correct card, and that she distinctly remembered that I gave her a $20 tip. I told her I gave her a $22 tip, and she rolled her eyes and stomped to the back to get the original slips. The slips showed that our dinner was charged to my card, but that I had signed the other patron's bill, and he had signed mine. I had left the $22 tip on a charge slip that wasn't mine. She was clearly irritated, stated she'd called and left a message with the other guest, told us she was sorry, and wanted to know what else we wanted her to do? She then blurted out that if I wanted, she could refund me $2 of the tip...What? We left feeling like we'd just gotten a tongue lashing. Keeping in mind that I was in no way rude, angry, or accusatory when I came back to the restaurant, I was in disbelief at how poorly we were treated. Apparently, we had greatly inconvenienced our waitress when she mistakenly gave my credit card to a stranger. Although I appreciate that fact that she called me later that night to let me know she had retrieved my card, was sorry for the mistake, and would gladly deliver it to the hotel where we were staying, the damage was already done. This experience left a terrible taste in our mouths. We will not patronize John's Grill again. read more

The server nearly hit the ceiling. But, one per person is one person. A cool thank you not a shit coupons would have earned another star. Sort of a high end Cheers with good grub and white tablecloths, the kind of place regulars will be remembered, probably by their second visit. Good start to the meal, nice local artisan herb bread and hubby's Tanqueray martini intact with the perfect amount of fine ice chips. My pork medallions succulently swam in a wipe-the-plate clean delicioso vermouth-based demi-glace sauce with artichokes elephant garlic, capers, and artichoke yumminess. The rest of the plate didn't hold a candle to it, but that's ok. Hubby's beef stroganoff was good, not special, suspect if he'd had the signature steak he's be a happier camper as stroganoff is not his usual fare for a reason. Key lime pie... ok but probably not worth the calories. Living Social got made the meal affordable, a little pricey otherwise though that seems par for the course here, still suffering sticker shop compared to Portland area prices. If John's was as close as the slightly higher priced Anthonys, would consider it a reasonable stop for a nicer meal, especially for out of town guests. Nicer interior, doesn't have Anthony's marina view, though a much more intimate, attentive dining experience. read more

Just finished dinner at John's Bistro, and all I can say is Wow! Such a great experience! From the food to the service, well done! This place rivals the the bigger, expensive Seattle restaurants, but with reasonable prices and superior quality! We arrived with a party of four, which had originally been reserved for a party of six. In the blink of an eye they had the table changed and relocated us, per our request, to a table outside. We started with lemon drops and beer; the lemon drops were PERFECT! This was likely due to this homemade sweet and sour - delicious! For appetizers, we had the crab cake (GIANT) and Brussels sprouts...both were AMAZING! Their fresh-baked herb bread was warm and the sea salt butter was the perfect pairing. In our party, two people and the filet and two the seafood fettuccine, both were cooked to perfection. Our conversation dwindled because none of couldn't stop eating! I also had two Long Island ice teas, which were the best I've had in over a decade. The staff was polite, professional, and attentive. The ambience of the restaurant is cozy, inviting, and friendly. Due to horrible weather and snow on the ground, very short staffed, however the service was first rate. The food was just superior. Fantastic food. Great place. If you want dessert, the caramel brownie sundae will blow your socks off. Vegetables are garden fresh, portions are great, and the presentation was excellent.
