I don't know why this guy has so many great reviews. I've been to this guy three times already not including the one time I had to go back when he forgot to adjust the length of my shirt. Each time I went to him he seems to be in any hurry and will cut corners when measuring my clothes. I brought in five shirts that all needed the arm lengths shortened. He marked one shirt and I asked him don't you need to measure each shirt? He said no he can do it based off one and still seemed to be in a hurry even though I was paying about $15 per shirt. I went back, and as usual he didn't seem to like it when I insisted on trying on all the things before I left, after trying on three of the shirts I listen to him and left...He forgot one of the shirts and I had to go back. He did my suits and multiple pants and all of them came back different lengths...odd. When asked his opinion on how short/long to have something he gives "zero" input. I've been to way better people who are nice, make suggestions, and don't rush customers. read more

I'm in the Navy reserves and I've trusted John the tailor for all my dress uniform alterations and have never been let down. I tell him precisely how each rating badge, hash mark and rocker are to go on the uniform and he listens and gets it done correctly. If you're in a rush, he'll take care of it ASAP too (for a fee of course). I wouldn't trust anyone outside of 32nd street in San Diego with my uniforms except John the Tailor. Is this the same John the tailor that has been here for years? I used to come here years ago to have all of my pants hemmed. It's been a long time so I don't remember what John looked like. He always did quality work. Came here last week to have new Levis boot cut jeans hemmed, and the work was nothing but shoddy. The hem work was all puckered and goofy looking, sticking out on the sides. When I tried to explain that this did not look good, I never even got to finish before he was saying, "I don't do nothing. I just hem. I don't do blah....blah...blah." Then a woman walked in and he proceeded to ignore me and focus his attention on her. I should have just walked out at that point (I was wearing the jeans) and not paid. But, I plopped my $10 on the counter anyway. I didn't want him chasing me outside with a sewing needle or something. He also used dark blue thread instead of the yellow that would match the rest of the stitching. I gave one star, but he's not even deserving of that. I will see if another tailor can fix it. I know there are other good ones around. Crappy work, John. read more

John The Tailor is great at what he does. I have been coming here for a while to get everything done- suits, pants, suspender buttons, whatever you need he can get it done right. I trust him now to the point where I don't even need to try on the clothes when I go to pick them up. Great local, family owned spot. Just go in, put on the article(s) you're getting tailored in one of their two dressing rooms, tell John what you want, he will mark them appropriately, tell him when you need them done by, give him your name/number on the ticket, then come back and pick up your clothes, and you're good to go. Nothing turns me off from a business faster than rudeness and not letting your customer tell you what they need. I've been to John the Tailor on 3 other occasions over the past 2 years and have been fine with the basic work (usually take the hem on pants or maxi dresses up-nothing difficult or fancy). Today I went in with a new pair of Nike workout pants with a torn flat seam at the crotch to be resewn and a maxi dress with an attached slip which sits WAAAAY too low and shows too much boobage. I was trying to tell him to just sew up the slip's spaghetti straps so it doesn't rest so low. He had me put the dress on and then kept telling me it is not easy to do. I mentioned, as an example and approximation, to have the slip sit about 1/2" below the front neck line of the dress but it didn't need to be exact-just so my boobs don't show. But he kept insisting it is hard to make it 1/2" and he can't guarantee it. I did NOT need it to be exact and was trying to tell him that, but he kept talking over me as I tried to explain and shaking his head saying that I'm asking for something that would be hard. O-K?! I thought tailors do this sort of thing, and if he seriously stopped talking to let me what I needed he'd realize it was not a difficult job. Anyway, so after 5 minutes of going back and forth with him to try to explain what I needed. I asked him can he or can't he do it and he repeated that he can't guarantee it, so I just got fed up and grabbed my stuff and went to another tailor called Giacomo on Whittier Blvd which was 2 minutes away. I will write Giacomo a 5-Star review right after this, because the owner/tailor, a soft-spoken older gentleman, listened to me and got right to measuring the dress straps and marking where he needs to cut and resew. I was in and out of Giacomo in 5 minutes and will be picking up my dress and pants in 7 days. No arguing back and forth about the job and its level of difficulty. I am glad that he has a cult following of good reviews and probably didn't need my business, hence his rude attitude, but I will NEVER come back to John the Tailor again because this one bad experience was enough to drive me away and to never recommend him to anyone I know. I will recommend Giacomo Tailoring on Whittier Blvd to all my friends. read more

Miracle worker. I ordered my prom dress online with specific measurements and they still messed up by making the bust two measurements too small! I went to two different alteration places before going to John and I was desperate because buying a new dress and returning it would be out of the question, though he was a little skeptical and bluntly told me he wasn't sure and it'd be difficult, but he told me he'd check again and let me know. All in all, he told me he could do it. I brought my dress in on a saturday and my prom is exactly a week after and he told me to call on wednesday to check, but it'd most likely be done by thursday. Tuesday afternoon he called me and told me it was finished and the dress fits like a glove! It's like he re-made it to fit my body exactly! Though it was a little bit of a drive from where I live, it was definitely worth it. This man is amazing, he literally did what several people said they couldn't do and for a fair price. I am glad I found John the Tailor on Yelp. I had a couple suits I had bought at JC Penney's that were still in great shape, but the pants were now too large. I tried on a pair for John and he spent about 10-15 seconds making a few chalk marks. He said he would do his best, but my pants had quite a bit of material that needed to be taken out of the rear end. When I picked them up a week later I was amazed at how well they fit. John was basically able to custom fit the slacks to me. I only wish they weren't my suit pants as they fit better than any pair I own. I will definitely return to have anything else I need altered in the future. I also recommended my grand dad go see John to have his slacks tailored as well.
