I don't know what I would have done without him. He was extraordinarily competent and professional but also really nice and relatable. I know he actually truly cared about helping me. He went out of his way to use every resource he had and made sure I didn't ruin my life over such a dumb decision. Basically, the way that I sold the controlled substances to the undercover was extremely sketchy and most people told me that there was no way around a felony. Mr. Goldman was very honest with me throughout the process. In order to avoid jail time or a felony, I thought I might have to enter an intensive year-long drug rehab program. I cried every day thinking about that reality. It would have required many hours a day, every day, in rehab for a year with addicts when I'm not one at all. I didn't know how I would have time for work, how to tell my loved ones, how taxing it would be for my soul. Mr. Goldman managed to work out a deal with the DA by working some magic only a grade A lawyer could achieve. I ended up just getting a misdemeanor and having to do community service. One of them did not acknowledge that I broke up with her so she surprise visits me in my Apt 2am on a Thursday using a key that I should have insisted on taking back. She sticks her head in my room and doesn't notice I'm with a new girlfriend. She takes a quick shower and walks back into my room completely naked. When she realizes I'm not alone she starts screaming "you fcuking Ahole" repeatedly. I grab her and take her to the living room where she dramatically flips over and demolishes a heavy glass coffee table. The adrenalin rush of catching me in bed with another woman had given her the strength of 10 men. She proceeded to attempt to rip my head off. Luckily since I do work out I was able to pry her off long enough to call 911. The police came within minutes and escorted her out with a powerful look of injustice in her face. She get's home, calls the police and files an assault charge against me. As with what is now standard ever since the OJ Simpson trial - I was called in for questioning a week later and spent a mandatory night in jail. Sal was then recommended as a criminal attorney by a mutual friend. He represented me to the judge and got the incident expunged from my record. Like it never happened. I was charged in Queens Criminal Court with eight felonies and a misdemeanor, the top charge being Burglary, a Class B Felony. My minimum prison sentence upon conviction was five years. The total grand prize for such allegations, which included Forgery, Grand Larceny of hundreds of thousands of dollars, and Assault upon on a senior citizen was a combined total of about 25 years. I interviewed several attorneys before meeting Sal, and they all promised that their best settlement looked like anywhere from six to 12 months, one hundred thousand dollars of restitution, and a permanent felony record. During my consultation with Sal he made it very clear to me that all he wanted was the truth. His theory is credibility: a prosecutor can't present a strong case if the complaining witness is a liar and the defense can't expect a dismissal upon the same. Facing 9 felony counts in an alleged domestic violence case versus his Ex-wife in the middle of the…read more"Me Too" movement, with a prosecutor who was trying to "make her career" on this case, my fiancé was facing potentially half a lifetime of incarceration. The "deal" the DA was offering was close to 10 years. We were referred to Jay by an attorney who said Jay was worth his weight in gold. That was an understatement. Jay's sense of what was plausible led him to discover innumerable false statements made by my fiancé's Ex several years prior. His superior knowledge of police protocol allowed him to eviscerate nearly all of law enforcement testimony, using it to his advantage and disclosing potential collusion. Jay's unparalleled knowledge of medical matters (+ the use of medical experts) enabled him to counter the allegations of violence. And his superior knowledge of the legal process allowed him to use the rules to my fiancé's advantage, in ways that few attorneys could. During the trial, Jay's background and abilities earned him the immediate respect of the court, the judge and, especially, the jury, who seemed to look forward to his times to speak almost like avid music fan at their favorite concert. I believe it's rare for the defense attorney to have far more credibility than the actual prosecutor, but Jay earned that respect each day of the trial. Perhaps what impressed me most about Jay aside from his skills was his diligence. The volume of material ended up being 3x what any of us anticipated, to the point where it was onerous. While Jay wasn't happy about it, after having made a deal with us, he never asked for more money even though he well deserved to. In the final three weeks especially, when things got intense and the trial was underway, Jay worked day and night, preparing for each days' opposing witness and for those he brought, discovering more and more inconsistencies in the complainant's story and the alleged facts raised by the prosecution. At the end of the day, my fiancé was found not guilty of all the violent felony charges and was convicted of only minor charges. It was a "slap on the wrist" vs. what he could have faced. Jay Goldberg (along with our own conviction in his innocence) wouldn't let that fate stand, despite odds which seemed insurmountable. And we will always be grateful to him.
