I delivered my first child with Hoff two years ago and I still reflect on how he made everything smooth sailing. I reacted in all sorts of weird ways to the medications while I was going through my labor (30 hours); he was basically paged by the hospital staff consistently throughout the time and he was monitoring me throughout. I swear the man doesn't sleep. He checked on me at 11pm at night and then came in for my delivery 9am the next day.. during the time that his private practice is open across the street. Hoff delivers over 90 percent of his own babies--this is what made me choose him. I moved out of the Redwood City area and went to a new doctor which actually made me feel even more inclined to recommend Hoff. First off, I am the type of person who doesn't like to know all the details of procedures. Hoff comes with confidence and tells you all the important stuff and not the stuff that makes your stress level spike. He clearly knows how to handle anxious mothers or women coming in for post-baby procedures. I really like his nurse practitioner Andrea as well. Dr. Hoff, You were my OBGYN for 30 years. You delivered 3 of my babies. My connection with you was strong and I trusted you, Your bedside manner has always been good, not a worrier, which came to haunt me. It has taken me 5 months to write this after my surgery, my total hysterectomy and tumor removal. I have had time to think deeply about this and all that I went through. You were wrong in not presenting the idea for me to see a specialist in "fibroid" pain, which is not what I lived with for many years of my life. The pain I endured should not have happened. I came you see you at least 10+ times for my lower left pain in my abdomen, countless messages which I have in writing and with no resolution, you just sent me off to see if I had a hernia or something in my colon. DR. BRENNAN SCOTT at PAMF was just the worst. He was actually mean to me when I told him I had pain, he did not believe me and said it was constipation from pain pills, which I no longer have to take. Sometimes you have to think outside of the box. In my situation you did NOT. I did not feel heard. My messages on the portal were not heard. I no longer trusted in myself. I thought my pain was just something I had to live with for the rest of my life. I finally went to the hospital as I couldn't take the pain anymore. I had a 8.5 tumor growing in my lower left side. The size of a 16 week pregnancy. If I would have had that tumor taken out early when it was a 4.4 cm tumor (not fibroid which you thought it was) , before the cells became aggressive with a mitotic count of 10+, I wouldn't be in this situation. I would not be worrying that this may come back. Why not just send me to a "fibroid" specialist? One push of your button to get me there. Sometimes things are not what you think they are. Send me to a specialist. They would know that a fibroid does not cause all the pain I was in. Now I will have to have CT of my abdomen and chest for the rest of my life in the event it metastasizes. The pain I endured for all those years were not made up pain. I didn't believe in myself anymore. It engulfed my life. It kept me up night after night in extreme pain, nausea, sweats and chills. I cannot even put into words how amazing and how thankful I am for all the excellent care my baby and I received from Dr. JD Hoff, the nurses, and MFM Dr's at PAMF. I had a very challenging pregnancy, and everyone was very encouraging. After a picture perfect pregnancy early on, I began developing complications and required frequent monitoring in the last trimester If it wasn't for Dr. J.D. Hoff and his expertise I don't know if my healthy child would be here now. Dr. Hoff is a funny, compassionate doctor, extremely knowledgeable with years of experience. I highly recommend him and his staff. He deserves five stars, but do be aware that like any OBGYN he sometimes runs late for appointments. I have been going to Dr. Hoff since 1986. He is a wonderful and exemplary doctor. He now takes care of my daughter and has delivered her three children into this world. He is patient, kind and will take his time to explain things to you. Sure sometimes you have to wait for Dr. Hoff, but he does deliver babies and they do not have a time schedule. I went to see this doctor on my first pregnancy. His concept of peoples time is not even considered. He was always running late. Even when you are his first patient for the day. He kept me waiting 45 mins! And when it was time to get examined, that is a story in itself. No bedside manner. He would tell me every time I visited him that he had no faith in this pregnancy, I was probably going to have a miscarriage. I always felt so discourage leaving his office. When I finally had the miscarriage, he basically told me that he told me so and that he didn't have any doubt that I would lose this baby. Can you imagine this being your first pregnancy and the doctor examining you in the most intimate of areas is tell you all this. I will never see this doctor again. His staff is amazing though. I ADORE Dr JD Hoff. Yes, the office is old but the decor isn't what kept me going for 8 yrs (2 pregnancies during 6 of those years). I went for him and his staff. Granted, there were many times I had to wait to see the doctor; there was even one time that I was in the exam room when they told me he wasn't going to make it due to an emergency delivery. Yes, I was not thrilled but after reflecting on it I realized that was to be expected -- I would certainly want him to drop everything and come help me when it was my turn to deliver so why shouldn't the other patients expect the same? That's the beauty (and price) of going to a solo practitioner. Your see *your doctor* at visits and *your doctor* delivers your baby - not whoever happens to be on call within the group practice. There was a slight change in office dynamics when they became part of PAMF but I think they did a great job with the transition. Nothing changed as far as Dr. Hoff was concerned; he was always patient with all of my lists of questions, never made me feel stupid and definitely never made me feel rushed or like I was wasting his time. He is a very knowledgeable, thorough and trustworthy doctor. The only reason I don't see him anymore is because I moved out of the area, otherwise I'd still be seeing him! read more

After hearing positive things from a friend, I made an appointment with Dr. Hoff. Six years, a Myomectomy and 2 c sections later, I continue to recommend Dr Hoff to anybody. He is the best! Surgeries are scary and it is important for me to know that someone competent is doing it. I'm lucky to have him. This review is long overdue and I could probably write several pages speaking to Dr. John Hoff's pure awesomeness as a reputable OB/GYN! Let's rewind back about 4 years when I started looking for a new OB/GYN. In the past, I was a sworn "only female Docs" type person, especially when it came to a Physician giving me any sort of a physical. However, a good friend (also colleague) of mine recommended Dr. J. Hoff to me. Quick side note: Dr. John Hoff comes from a family of Doctors; therefore, it's imperative to mention his first name or else, you may end-up meeting with one of his brothers - another OB/GYN in the same office or a Dentist in the same city. Not that it would be a bad thing except if you thought you were going for your annual and next thing you know, your teeth are being examined; or worse, the opposite. Ha ha. Anyhow, my first response to this referral was, "Oh no, I only meet with female OB/GYNs." Nevertheless, I started to ask around and learned that other colleagues of mine were Dr. John Hoff's patients; as well as friends who lived in the area (Belmont, San Carlos, and RWC). In addition, people were sharing their moving stories with me re: Dr. J. Hoff so I finally decided to have an initial meeting with him whereby I brought a list of questions. I met with him. He answered my questions. And it was a done deal. Dr. J. Hoff was officially my new OB/GYN. Why did I leave my previous OB/GYN, you ask? Well, for one, my Doctor never seemed to have enough time during our appointments. She was always in a rush and if I asked more than a couple questions during our scheduled time-slot, it felt like an inconvenience. Plus, her bedside manner left much to be desired and you know, we just didn't seem to have that Physician-Patient chemistry. It was time for me to move on...and glad I did! Dr. J. Hoff is the antithesis of my previous OB/GYN! Fast forward to almost 9 months ago when my husband and I were eagerly anticipating the arrival of our precious baby boy. We had since moved to another city prior to becoming pregnant and despite the rave reviews I received re: a nearby hospital and its physicians, I could not leave Dr. J. Hoff. My husband participated in my prenatal appointments and fell in love with Dr. J. Hoff just as much as I had, if not more. No joke! My hubby can be quite the skeptic so I don't take his approval of Dr. J. Hoff lightly. Dr. J. Hoff was very supportive of my birth plan and although I had already decided to stay flexible and open during the actual birthing process, I was not prepared for what would follow shortly thereafter. Approximately 16 hours after our son was delivered, I was separated from our baby for almost an entire week. Not separated as in he stayed in one room and I in another room within the same hospital but separated as in he was emergency ambulanced to another hospital with a Level 3 NICU while I had to stay at the current hospital. You can only imagine the fear and overwhelming sadness I felt during the first week of his life as more than anything, I just wanted to be close to & bond with our new bundle of joy. I couldn't hold him or see him. If it weren't for my husband going back and forth from both hospitals, bringing me pictures and videos of our little muffin, that week could have been tougher than it already was. I won't bore you with all of the details but thankfully, there was a very happy ending to our story. Our son couldn't be any healthier and happier! =) Dr. J. Hoff, the medical staff, and all of the nurses were AMAZING throughout that entire experience! I cannot thank them enough and I doubt my basket of cookies did justice. Due to our move, I had intended to find an OB/GYN closer to our new home (following our son's birth) but after yet another incredible experience with Dr. John Hoff and his team, I would be foolish to change OB/GYNs. Dr John David Hoff is one of the true assets to our community and Sequoia Hospital. He is extremely bright and has a good deal of respect for the natural labor process. He is one of a small handful of doctors I have seen come in at the bedside and SIT DOWN with his patients to talk and educate them about their options. He can be intense at times, but behind those handsome bushy eyebrows and mustache is a doctor cut of the old cloth- wise, informed and one you can trust whether it a private question about something to do with your body or health, or an emergency situation where you require a reliable strong leader with sound direction and clarity. read more

If you are looking for a knowledgable and patient OB who spends a lot of time with you then this is the guy you want. I have been with him since the delivery of my kids many years ago. You might wait for the appointment but when was the last time your doctor sat and answered all your questions and concerns without rushing you out the door or looking at his watch? It is worth a little wait for me. BTW the pee in the cup is indeed for glucose and protein levels since they are signs of pregnancy induced ilnesses. I had gestational diebetes and this is how it was caught. I recently had to consider a surgical procedure that just made me unreasonably anxious. Dr. Hoff spent the time to reassure and give me options. He even offered to stay with me during the induction of anesthesia which had also spooked me. Very kind. I really couldn't care less about office furniture and chatty staff. If I need surgery, it's all about knowledge, skill and compassion. This is an update. I know of a handful of my doctor's patients who have written good Yelp reviews and we all have the problem that they disappear. Not sure what is going on. This will probably disappear as well. I am disappointed in the Yelp process. It does not seem fair. read more

I have been a patient with Hoff Medical Group for several years and have never been comfortable in their offices. They have now joined the Palo Alto Medical Foundation and their offices are now getting remodeled, unfortunately poorly. The new reception counter is completely open to the waiting area, amplifying all sound. Before it was just high volume commercial radio blasting overhead, now I have to listen to the staff chatting and gossiping, as well as other people's procedure scheduling, blood smear results, etc. full volume. There's very little closure or sensitivity to what should be private. I have always been disappointed in the staff and administration of this group. Last year I was told I would be called to schedule a non-emergency procedure (which I wasn't eager to have done anyway) and nobody called. So I let it slide. This year, my doctor would still like me to have the procedure, and the staff finally called *after* booking a timeslot for me in the hospital department, without checking with me first about the time. It seems like they're either mindless or arrogant. If it weren't for the fact that I like my actual doctor, I would have changed groups long ago. But now with these "improvements" which are not actually making anything better.... I may finally change. I'm dismayed by providers who treat patients like cattle or conveniences for THEM, instead of placing patients first. read more

I found Dr. J.D. Hoff in 1992 when I was finally pregnant (with my only child, a daughter), and my old gynecologist had retired. He is the best doctor I have ever had! Kind, easy-going, expert, open-minded to new ideas and complementary care.... And the best thing is he never rushes you -- he doesn't even get up to leave the room until you say you don't have any more questions. I wish all doctors could train with him! Yes, sometimes you may have to wait awhile, as he gives everyone the time they need (and sometimes has to go deliver a baby! as that's what he does) but I think this is fine, and I plan on it when I go, and catch up on some reading! read more

Dr. Hoff has been my doctor for over 27 years and his dad before that. I normally do not write reviews but I have to this time because he is so compassionate and cares so much for his patients. He has the best bedside manner from the very beginning when he delivered my daughter many years ago and continues after all these years. Dr. Hoff is a phenomenal OBGYN. I transferred to him early in my second trimester as I had some serious concerns with my previous doctor. Several of my friends went to J. D. Hoff and raved about him. I now understand why. Dr. Hoff is thorough, professional, patient and overall extremely knowledgeable and competent. He delivered my son via c-section and everything went beautifully. My scar is "perfect" (as perfect as a scar can be!). In addition, Dr. Hoff helped me make sound objective decisions about long-term choices whereas my previous OB was quick to say yes without providing objective insight into long-term thinking/possible challenges. The only downside about Dr. Hoff that I can share is that he runs chronically late. For one appointment my husband and I waited nearly an hour and later learned he left the office (to go to the hospital across the street I believe). That said, on average I'd say he was about 30 minutes late. The upside of this is he pretty much delivers all of his own babies so you don't have to worry about having a doctor you've never met in the delivery room. In fact, his brother, Dr. Gary Hoff assisted Dr. J D Hoff for my c-section. Dr. Gary Hoff has rave reviews as well and I felt very confident overall with my experience. It was hard for me to get pregnant and I finally got pregnant via IVF. I chose JD Hoff as my obstetrician, and It was a HUGE mistake. When I was almost full term, I felt sick on a Friday and went to see Hoff. He slapped on a heart monitor, heard a heartbeat, told me I had a virus, and to get some rest. He did not take a blood test or do an Ultrasound. On Monday I stayed home from work because I still did not feel well. I then noticed my baby, Evan was not moving. I went back to see Hoff. The nurse came in with the heart monitor and could not find a heartbeat. Dr. Hoff was summoned, no heartbeat. Evan was dead. I was told to go to Sequoia Hospital for a confirmation ultrasound in three hours. Good thing I knew the Cardiologists at Sequoia and they got me right in for an ultrasound and did not make me wait three hours. The ultrasound showed Evan was dead. Hoff induced labor and I delivered a stillborn child. Hoff commented that the placenta was full of infection (a blood test on Friday with a dose of antibiotics may have led to a different outcome and a living son) Interestingly, Hoff had the placenta destroyed immediately. We asked for an autopsy of Evan for cause of death and they needed the placenta and did not have it. Further, the County Medical Examiner came to investigate the death and mentioned she was JD Hoff's patient and how much she loved him. The Hoff's have it all tied up. read more
