Johan Cruyff ArenA is the main and national stadium of The Netherlands, located in Amsterdam, it was previously called the Amsterdam Arena, up until earlier this year before being officially renamed at the start of the 2018-19 season in memory of legendary Dutch footballer Johan Cruyff, who scored 190 goals in 240 games for Ajax in 9 years (in his first spell at the club), Ajax, of course, are the Amsterdam club who play here, alongside The Netherlands National Football Team who play some fixtures here.
Due to my love of football, I'm delighted to make this place my 2000th Yelp review, it isn't the first time I've used this milestone, however, with Hull City's KCOM Stadium marking my 1200th review and Leicester City's King Power Stadium marking my 1800th, and possibly even more, but it's always nice to mark the milestone with a special, cool business and a positive review, especially one like 2000!
Back to my review - the Arena remains quite a new stadium, being built in the early 1990's, before opening and hosting its first Ajax match in 1996, since then it has become an amazing place, especially for Ajax fans with regular club tours in English and Dutch, reasonably priced, I personally paid 12.50 euros and ended up getting a tour guide on my own, the tour guide was really friendly and took me to everything I wanted to see, he was excellent and a true asset, when someone thinks of a stadium, they think of the players that work there, but the tour guide was great and one of the unsung heroes of the stadium which sees the likes of Kasper Dolberg and Matthias De Light play every fortnight.
The stadium also is quite impressive in how it uses rail seating, it blends in the rail seating to avoid it looking ugly as it sometimes does, and of course, the seats do come down in case a fan decides to sit, which is required by UEFA restrictions, which Ajax have to follow as they are regularly in UEFA competitions (Champions League, Europa League etc)
The stadium is quite easy to get to, with Arena Boulevard nearby, where there is a train station where you can get into central Amsterdam (Zuid and Central) via train or metro quite quickly, and there's also multiple budget hotels nearby (such as Hampton by Hilton) and a Starbucks, most of these places I presume get really busy on a match day - I only visited during my week in Amsterdam on a regular day, being unable to get tickets for a match due to an issue with them not being available for foreign fans or sold-out - I never saw tickets go on sale in the first place despite the club telling me they would and regularly checking their website so this is an issue.
The whole ticketing system here, even when you get to the Arena to book the tour is confusing, to say the least, and the staff seemed a little angry at me for a while for asking basic questions - such as when my tour guide would be there and where the toilets were.
The retractable roof design also is really cool and impressive, and only something I have seen once before - at Cardiff's Principality Stadium, but the design here is something of art, it is a lot nicer.
I even saw former Manchester United and Ajax goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar during my tour, who despite spending a lot of his career playing for a rival team, as I'm a Manchester City fan, still seemed like a nice guy when I saw him during my tour.
The whole setup of the stadium, with it being the largest in the country, being in the capital of The Netherlands and including a royal box and multiple other cool features, overall being an impressive stadium makes it feels like a national stadium, despite the national team sometimes playing away in cities around the country such as Rotterdam, I can't help but feel a larger capacity would also reflect this, with the Arena actually smaller than a number of stadiums in England, and just short of 40,0000 capacity smaller than our national stadium, the previously mentioned Wembley.
Overall, this is a really cool stadium and it also differs from other stadiums through the use of rail seating (which is currently banned in England)
and the fact the stadium tour is better than average (this means something from someone who has been on quite a lot at multiple stadiums, times and countries!)
I'm going to award the Amsterdam Arena, now called Johan Cruijff ArenA a strong four-star rating as it is a really cool stadium with a great stadium tour, but perhaps to improve, making tickets for events and stadium tours easier and more understandable, and perhaps expanding the capacity to reflect the great stadium it is, to make it better compare to more stadiums worldwide which are often regarding to as more iconic such as Wembley Stadium and Camp Nou. read more
