We've had Joe and Richard do a couple chairs for us. And they've done 2 couches and several chairs for my mom. Price is very reasonable and the work is excellent. Quick turn times also. I first heard about this business through one of my students, whose relative owns or owned the business. The first two times I had things to upholster, I shopped around and found Joe's to be the most economical. This is a small, family-owned business. It is run out of a garage, and it is nothing much to look at. I have always taken my things to them, and the intake process has gone smoothly. They can be hard to reach sometimes, but their work is very good. On one job, I had a couple of craftsman chairs with ottomans, and a paisley fabric with a very prominent pattern and a white background. They did a great job on centering the design on each piece, and kept the white fabric spotless. On another job, I took in a curbside throwaway loveseat that folded out to a twin bed. They did a great job in restoring it and recommended a beautiful cottage-y yellow floral fabric that did wonders for it. The best job they did for me was in reupholstering a 1920s armchair with a complicated back. It is curved, with channel fill, piping, and partial wooden pierced arms. They covered it with a chenille fabric, it looks great, and has held up well for several years. If you are patient and kind, you should try out this small business. read more

I would strongly advise against using Joe's Upholstery. To make this review concise enough that it hopefully gets read: -- We organized a time for them to come pick up my sectional. -- They brought one man and one youth to pick up a huge sectional. -- Tried to get it out of my house and were not able to just the two of them. -- Put two deep gashes and multiple scratches in my hardwood floor and scraped up my wall. I had to tell them to stop because they were damaging the floor. -- Told me they would return the following day with two other men. -- Did not show the following day or return calls and texts. -- Spent the next two weeks ignoring my calls and text messages. The two times the woman that answers the main line answered the phone she promised to have Richard (who I had been working with) return my calls and he did not. -- My husband went to their location and spoke with Joe himself and was again reassured they would have Richard return our calls and got nothing. -- We reached out again to discuss the damages to our home, and radio silence. We now have damaged hardwood floor, damaged wall, a sectional that now has a broken connector, broken glass, and rips on the side, and still no returned calls or texts. I was initially pleased to hear good reviews however my experience was a horror story. I took some automotive seats to get recovered. I was fed a web of lies on timing and was strung along for a few weeks. I was told I would have them by certain dates that came and went. My items were never touched. I had to pick them up and take them elsewhere. I would be very wary of doing business with these people. read more

Stay far away! Richard lies, the workmanship is shoddy, they would be in jail if this wasn't a civil matter. A friend of mine had a piece done and she was happy with it. So I thought I would try him. He picked up cowhide and an ottoman. Brought it back, it looked ok. I paid him. Told him I wanted two pillows from the rest of the hide. Showed him my slip covered couch from Shabby Slips (which I love) and asked him if they made slipcovers and he said all the time. He told me where to go to by the linen he approved the fabric. I ordered it (over $700). He took my couch and showed back up in just a few days minus the arm covers and the pillows. I paid him anyway and he promised he would be back with the two sets of arm covers and the pillows. Never happened. I had to hire someone else to finish the job...and wait for almost two months to get my fabric and the hide returned. And then it gets worse... First wash, the slip cover literally shreds. Just comes apart at the seams. Looks like he forgot to pre wash it as well, as it shrinks. He used only one row of stitches. He will not return my money for his labor or the fabric. I have called at least 15 times to "the office" which is his mothers house. She apologizes that he never does as he says. She told me people call everyday and complain. He doesn't answer his phone and his vm is usually full. He is now, literally 5 minutes ago, refusing to return an antique heirloom piece that I left with him claiming the sign in his shop (?, he comes to your house and works in his Moms driveway I guess...) says after 30 days, he has that right. Never saw a shop, a sign, a note on an invoice...oh that's right, there is nothing in writing! He says he is selling it. I sent the Constable by yesterday. She told me she felt she was being "given the runaround" by the Mom who said "Richard was on his way to return the chaise right then". She told me to hit the Civil Courthouse on Monday with all my documentation, use the neighborhood website and other means like the Better Business Bureau to report him "if he has a real business"....the answer to that is obvious. read more

I had Joe's (really his son) do 2 slip covers and reupholster a sofa. They did a good job on the slipcovers, the sofa was only fair. The skirt was too short and the cushions a bit pucker. But, he was cheap. I had also given him a bolt of fabric for a chair he was supposed to make at the time we did the sofa. He had a number of excuses, his guy went to Mexico, and other reasons. I eventually asked to get my bolt of fabric back (~$400) ad I could never get him to return my calls. Once I got him on the phone by sending a text and he called back but never brought thee fabric back, even though he always claimed he still had it. The son is a thief and stole y expensive fabric and would never respond. Buyer beware! think the dad was the talent but the shoddy business practices are the son! read more

The now owner, Richard Alvarez, STOLE $400 FROM ME - took a $300 deposit and $100 in fabric and will not return my calls - over 7 months. He would occasionally text me back that he would have my chair delivered by the following week then radio silence. I called and spoke to his mother who answers the main line and she was kind but said she couldn't do anything because he holds all the money. I guess he got the business from his father, Joe, she said and he has been making poor decisions. I've actually left the Houston area and pleaded with him to delivery my chair before the movers arrived but he would not respond. What a jerk. DON'T RISK IT! read more

I am an interior designer. I have used Joes for several years. His re-upholstry is good and fast. But I have had him do custom pieces for me 2 times. The first time it took 3 times the amount of time to get it than he quoted. The last time ut never got done . He promised me it would be ready ne:xt week over snd over. Finally after 7 months and still no furniture, he told me he could not do it. He gave me back clients fabric, but did not have the $1200 dep. Its been 3 weeks and I still have not received back the money. He is also very hard to reach. I even had his cell number, but he would not answer or respond to texts. Joe'semployee Richard came to the house ( about 30 minutes late) and gave me an estimate. He promised to come back and pick up the furniture a few days later. He missed the first pick up time. After calling and texting, the furniture still is in my garage. Too bad, Richard seemed intelligent and nice, but may be lazy and work when he chooses. read more

I contacted Joe's Upholstery to have my great aunt's antique rocker reupholstered in preparation for our new baby. I worked with Richard and he was wonderful. Returned my calls/texts promptly, directed me on good places to get reasonably priced fabric, and quoted me a reasonable price for the work. He included free delivery and pick up of the furniture and completed the job in 48 hours. It looks beautiful. I would use them every time! read more

AWFUL! I sent 7 chairs to be reupholstered 3 months ago. He promised they would be done in two weeks. He's delivered only 4 of the chairs (this was about 2 months ago) and has since failed to return any call, text, or voicemail I have left. I don't foresee ever having my chairs returned to me.
