I let the women behind the counter make a selection because every single flavor sounded divine. While I was there, I bought a salad for the train ride home as well. Fortunately for my babysitter, the salad was for me and not for her, because it was one of the worst I've had in a looooooooooong time. Since she devoured the macarons in one sitting and raved about how fresh and yummy they were, I plan on getting a box for myself the next time (while staying far away from the salads, as well you should..)

Many Opera attendees come here for a quick bite to eat (order at the counter) before settling in their seats. Located on the plaza across from the Opera house and very convenient, I Highly recommend MARROU. I often stop in for a cafe and pastry late afternoons. Lovely interior and very comfortable. Staff is friendly and helpful. When my husband band travels I often pick up dinner for myself. Marinated shrimp, grilled veggies and stuffed egg plant among my favorites. Enjoy!

(And, it was that mid-afternoon time when it's difficult to find something to eat most places in France.) I'm reluctant to give the place two stars, as the staff was very kind and attentive, but the sandwich had been sitting in the case for a while, and I've gotta say, it was quite a lot LESS than delicious. We so seldom have food in France that doesn't pass the tasty test, but I'm afraid that's where we landed here. Maybe we chose the wrong sandwich! Maybe we should have had chocolate instead. But next time we're hungry in Marseille, we'll likely seek out another option.

Thanks to Yelp, I was able to find a local sandwich shop about two blocks away. I quickly trotted over to the street and climbed the 60 or so steps to reach the street where it was located. This little yet charming restaurant had a line of about 10 customers deep. I got in line and was anxiously waiting to see what my options were inside. Once inside the team of three was bustling about to make sure all the customers were being helped. What stood out to me right away was the Focaccia. It was impressive to see and looked amazingly delicious. It was like a siren, calling to me even though I do not usually eat cheese. The pastrami sandwich also looked good as well. I would have not partaken in consuming it but considering how horrible our experience was with the brasserie on the Vieux Port, I decided on getting that sandwich as a backup for my two accompanying diners. I asked for my order to go and paid. I carried my load of sandwiches like a soccer player who won the World Cup, proud and triumphant. The service was incredible, the flavors were all present, and the prices were affordable. I highly recommend this sandwich shop and skip all brasseries on the Vieux Port.
