My brother and I stopped in for a drink. Like other reviewers mentioned there is a large TV that I would imagine would be great for watching games (when we went it was all commercials). There were other TVs that we're playing games. My brother ordered a beer which was good. I ordered a milkshake (combination of the banana and strawberry). The main reason I ordered this was because it said "fresh bananas" and "fresh strawberries." Im not sure if there was a fresh banana since I didn't see the guy peel and place the banana in the blender but I did see the strawberry part, it was a red liquid being poured out of a jug. The milshake was watery and did not taste like banana or strawberries. It tasted like artificial fruits and left a bad after taste. I went here on the recommendation of a friend who has moved here from the US and I probably should have overruled the suggestion and picked something else :-) It's a bar with a massive tv screen in the centre of it. Nothing spectacular and the food is ok. I had the suicide chicken wings and it was not hot at all, in fact, it was sour :-( The jalapeño poppers were also ok and they served a sour tamarind like sauce to go with it and it was ordinary. The service is ok and the prices are also ok. The place lacked ambience and it was an empty sports bar. I may come back here if someone's drags me back here. read more

I'm gonna go with an average three. I can certainly see why people are giving this a one or two star rating because there is some scary aspects to the place, but there actually is also a couple of semi decent things as well. I spent several hours at the bar watching football and drinking beers with a large group of guys. Positive things. Bar staff were very friendly and helpful. They looked after a big drunken group well and never complained once. The TV screen is five stars it's gigantic and amazing for watching sport. Literally the best TV I have seen in any bar anywhere in the world. Final thing is I had a salami pizza and you know it was actually ok. Very basic and defo a frozen base. But it was just what I needed after several beers. The negative? It was a bit like being on the set of Friday night lights, a bad episode. The beer list was appalling, not one nice beer. The toilet attendant was scary as anything. Stared a lot and acted like she was guarding the gates to hell.... Ok for watching sport, but not much beyond... Still if you are in a large rowdy group then it's not a bad place to go. read more

If I could go below one star, I would. I've literally never walked out of a restaurant without eating what I ordered, but it happened at Joe Champs last night. I went to watch the NFL semis. As expected, there were a lot of Americans, as well as Germans, watching the game. It was full, but not crowded, and felt like a pretty average American sports bar. I was seated right away. My waiter was very uninterested in his job - he'd rather watch the game and text his friends off to the side. Poor form to do this out in the open... at least go in the back. I had already been seated for 15 minutes before I got my beer. I would understand if he was being run every which way, but it wasn't that busy. He just didn't care. I ordered an appetizer, the chicken fingers, early in the second quarter. I waited patiently, but started to try to catch my waiter's eye around halftime of the game. It took a good 5 times of him walking by (looking at his phone or the tv) before I could flag him. By that time, the table behind me had been seated, ordered drinks, food, and received their food (full dishes, not appetizers). I asked him how much longer it was going to be, and he gave a surprised look on his face. So he forgot to put the order in, I get it. It happens. Two minutes, he said after going back to the kitchen to 'check' on it. By this time I'm pretty heated... another 6 minutes later, the food comes out. I hate to be picky here, but if you say it's going to be 2 minutes, make it 2 minutes. Under-promise, over-deliver. The kicker was that when the 'chicken fingers' came out, they looked like they had just been heated in the microwave. There were 3 or 4 round tortilla chips and a little cup of salsa. I wish I had taken a picture. These were not even Wal-Mart frozen food quality... we're talking after school snack quality for a child - that they can make themselves. Now, if these had come to me 5 minutes after I ordered them (which was the obvious prep time), I would've been ok with it. But add the fact that the waiter did not care in the least along with the amount of time that had passed (about 45 minutes - midway through the 3rd quarter) - it was too much. The manager came over and offered a beer on the house as an apology, but it was too late at that point. I walked out the door and across the street to KFC - where I was served better quality chicken ~1 minute after ordering. So the moral of the story is, if you want to watch American sports and eat chicken fingers, go to KFC. Then if you want to suffer through watching a game at a poorly run restaurant, go across the street to Joe Champs. As an American expat living in Cologne, I'd rather watch play by play updates on the internet than go back. read more

My friend and I went on a quest to try as many of Köln's best beers at the best beer places. I'm sure by putting Joe Champs in my journey will be frowned upon but we only went here because we are American. Since being in Germany I have heard from many people and a person who worked here to never ever eat the food because of how unsanitary it is. So I usually take that advice. So my friend and I ordered 2 Salitos which is beer with tequila in it and it is very good I promise. But being able to go to a bar with a big screen and greasy gross food is sometimes nice because I miss America. Sports, greasy food, overly priced sounds like an American restaurant to me. read more

They have the idea of a Sports Bar, 100's of TV's, nice stuff hanging on the walls. Actually a really nice place if you're into this kind of Bars! Food is OK. I was there for the first time, and i'll go back. They kinda understood the American concept but well, it's Germany, to understand what i mean here is an example: in McD's they charge you for a second sauce sachet! Here they don't, but my Nachos were simply too dry, almost no cheese at all, the BBQ sauce was also way too little and just like 5 small pieces of chicken. As in every Sport bar they had Corona as it's supposed to be! Kudos! The BIG problem here is that because of the time difference between here and the US you'll probably end up watching Soccer! So that's not really cool, it's not their fault though! I'll have to ask if they do something special for the Super Sunday! The service was average/good, the waitress was really nice & friendly also good looking, but somehow i had to look after her every time i needed a refill, but besides that everything OK. Another pro here is that they accept all kinds of Credit Cards! There's not many choices here but i truly recommended this place. To compare it with Lansdowne Road or Big Wangs would be a Sin, but it's sort of a Hooters without the Hoohoo's. One thing that truly disturbs me is that in such a place, that's not cheap, there's this guy in front of the toilettes expecting 50 cents from every person that gets in to use them? It's the obligation of the restaurant to have clean toilettes for the customers. There are some customs here in Germany that are unbelievably outdated. read more

The food here was astonishly terrbile quality. It was like concession stand food and the only reason we stayed was because it was freezing outside. Ordered chicken fingers and chili cheese fries. The chicken fingers were like Walmart frosen chicken strips and was served with sweet and sour sauce and the chili cheese fries came with a canned-like chili and plastic nacho cheese sauce on freezer burned french fries. First off let me say the service and staff was good, it's not their fault that the chef doesn't want their customers to experience edible American style bar food...we ordered two items... a dozen wings crispy with sauce on the side and nachos with 3 toppings...pretty simple, right? So the wings came out completely the opposite, undercooked, almost cold (some were) like they were frozen Wal-Mart bagged wings full of terrible bbq sauce...oh and did i mention there were only 7 of them! what was supposed to be blue cheese dressing was some kind of funky tasting white weird sauce...Now for the nachos...My friends and I are still talking/laughing/ crying over the fact that it's almost impossible to screw this simple dish up, but Champs pulls it off!...they were literally a basket of nacho Doritos and the 3 toppings were supposed to be salsa, guacamole, sour cream...fair enough...in reality it's ketchup, a sour green chemistry experiment that doesn't remotely taste like guacamole, and another weird tasting white sauce that aliens dropped off...only word to describe them is HORRENDOUS...they need to get on the internet and search "nachos", but the tv's were nice. read more

I have had some very good experiences here in the past although the food isn't anything special. For example, I watched the World Cup final here in 2014 and had a great time. However, during my visit today the service was deplorable. The waitress Anya treated my friends and I like a bother and never checked on us once. Each time we needed a new drink we had to hunt her down and when it came time to pay it was the same story. I'm sure the other waiters and waitresses are great (maybe) but if Anya is your waitress, leave. read more

Located right off Rodolfplatz you cant miss Champs, its the American looking bar right on the corner with all the bright lights and big screen TV's, and on nights where there is a big game, you will see crowds of men standing in the street watching the game. But it always looks full and every time Ive been there its been a great crowd and atmosphere. Although the waiters always seem busy, im never really sure what they are doing, because they never do much'waiting'. But they are always friendls, helpful and willing to join in the fun. And even if they dont speak great english they will always have a crack at it, so if you dont speak German this is an easy place to be a fussy eater ;) The food is all very america, but its good (you just need a gym session after to make up for the meal). Im a particular fan of the superbowl salad, which I struggle to finish, but its still fantastic! Although my friends raved about the ribs, burgers and cheese fries they had, so Im assuming Champs doesnt do that much wrong. For a non-German fix of american culture this is a great place to go. Its a little gawdy, but not enough to offend. Id recommend going there for dinner anytime, its one of my favorite places in cologne for a casual fun dinner with my mates. read more
