Luckily, this little gem is very easily accessible and not hard to find (due to the pink exterior paint!). I hate those shops where the employees are hunting you down, basically forcing you to buy mass-produced items at ridiculous costs. We wanted a place where we could feel good about our purchases. Mexicarte sells all handmade items by artists throughout Mexico. It's almost like a fair-trade store. You leave feeling good about the money you just spent, and can come back home bearing gifts with a story behind them. Mexicarte has the prettiest, brightest, and most unique gifts in every corner of the store. We actually had to come back a few times because we kept comparing all the other shops to this one, and just wanted to spend our money here. From day of the dead items, skulls, crosses, to handbags, jewelry, wall art, clay art, you name it. Everything is handcrafted with such care and detail, you can see the love the artists put into it. Everything is priced very fair. You can find gifts for any budget, we brought back a couple little turtle figurines for about $1.50 USD for example...and great quality! I love how helpful the employees are, and can provide the backstory to all the items they sell. They let you roam around freely, and don't pressure you into buying anything. Parking? Not so sure. We stayed at Akumal Beach Resort, it took us 10 minutes to walk up the beach here. You will see the Akumal Dive Shop, walk through to the back of the Dive Shop and you will see Akumal Plaza. It's a bright pink stand-alone building. You can't miss it. Happy shopping! :)

Skip the Tour--Just a Sales Trap…read more We joined the Marie's & Co Joya de Mexico excursion from our hotel as a cheap way to get to Playa del Carmen--we'd done it before but it's a free ride to Playa and from our hotel would have been a lot of money for 3 people. The tour includes a stop at a "silver jewelry factory" and a tequila tasting, which is really just a sales pitch. We skipped the tasting since we don't drink tequila and wandered around the flea-market-style area instead--everything was ridiculously overpriced! A small cat statue was going for $25 USD, honestly not even worth $5. The jewelry shop was the same as before--overpriced pieces and the same false claim that their silver "doesn't tarnish." I bought two pairs of earrings on this same tour two years ago, and both tarnished. If you're just after a free ride to Playa del Carmen, this will get you there, but the "tour" portion is a waste of time.

We stopped here as part of a Tequila tasting tour with a group of 4 people. Apparently our friends were kicked out once they made it clear that they weren't buying any jewelry. They were escorted to the front of the store outside and told they had to stay. Our couple experience wasn't like that -- Jose was very pleasant and took us all around the shop explaining different things about the various jewels and crystals. When that was done it was time for tequila tasting ! We took a small cart to the building next door where the Matis family sells tequila and were given Gabriel as a host. Gabriel was amazing, he clocked our tastes quickly and was able to make great suggestions based on everyone in the group. We tried all 17 tequilas and couldn't resist the coffee, pomegranate, kiwi and guava flavors. They had a special so we got the medium bottles with more tequila for less than the gift box price. All in all Gabriel made this portion very fun! For the jewelry store, I'd give the experience 3.5 stars but the tequila tasting side was 5 out of 5! If you're okay with being hard-sold on jewelry the experience is worth it for the tequila! Thank you Gabriel !

Stopped by randomly while passing by as my woman noticed some jewelry she wanted to check out. They sell hand made jewelry along with diving gear. Instead of waiting outside I opted to go in myself and ended up purchasing a mask for snorkeling among with other stuff. After buying a $100 US dollar mask, I was surprised to find out that my mask leaked water during my trip to Akumal. Being in Mexico, and not keeping my receipt, I was under the impression that I blew my money away and didn't have much hope for a remedy from a now used mask. Nevertheless I stopped by on my way back, and the owner immediately took ownership and assured me that he would remedy my problem one way or another. His wife took her time to troubleshoot, after which she arranged a similar priced mask that worked perfectly for me there after. She even thought me how to prevent my mask from fogging... Granted that I keep on coming back to Tulum all the time, I'd gladly support this business in future and recommend others who are looking for reliable folks to do business with!

It appears that this company's issues are company wide, not just limited to one store. If I could give negative stars, I would. Unfortunately, that is not an option, but it should be. Beware of purchasing jewelry from this business. They have zero integrity. My experience.... I bought jewelry three days ago. No issues. They were having a 50% off sale. So, I have to use my resort credits, and they have a sign that states that resort credits can be used at their store. Great, right? Well, the 50% sale is still going on, but, if you use your resort credits, they charge you full price, and claim that the 50% of that they will give you is the 50% of the FULL price. I returned EVERYTHING I purchased from them. I wouldn't buy a roll of toilet paper from this company. They are a BAD joke.... And have zero integrity. I would recommend buying from ANY OTHER company rather than this dishonest company. Palace Resorts needs to rethink in reference to the businesses it has on its premises.
