They serve hot dogs, polish dogs, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, fries/cheese fries, stuff like that. You walk up and order, and they have a place to stand and set your food on to eat on the side of this place. It's open 24hrs, but I wouldn't go here in the wee hours of the night alone because you could get robbed or raped - it's not safe, it's super sketchy! What the heck is going on here?? Now I'm seriously cogitating if my taste buds are fundamentally different from the other reviewers. An average of 4.5 stars, really?? I got the polish and pork chop with anticipation of getting my a** kicked. Boy was I wrong.. The pork chop was cooked to the fullest and didn't have a nice texture. Flavorless. Don't know if they marinaded the pork before grilling. 'Onions Grilled to Perfection' on their website is definitely an overstatement. The polish didn't let me down but it's merely so-so. The onions should be drier because too much moisture would just mess with the flavor of the sausage. The sausage was big and juicy indeed, but not crunchy or sweet as claimed. Fries were way too greasy. They should at least absorb the excessive oil before serving. I only ate one third of the fries when I felt like I was about to have a cardiac arrest. Mind you, I was actually starving when I had those. I don't know if I would give this place 1 star in another scenario; nor do I wanna find out. Just finished some power walk. Seriously. At 3am, it doesn't get any better than this. My favorites are the fish sandwich and the polish sausage with those onions fresh off the grill (THE BEST!). The staff is always nice (to me anyway), and sometimes even toss me an extra bag of fries -- which are waaaaaaay better than the fries down the street. Do NOT be misled. Jim's is THE original. Awesome dogs and POLISH. SO good. Open late and always HOT as well as SPICY with the sport peppers. Free fries are also killer. Cheap! True nowhere to sit though and tough to find parking sometimes late at night.... Love the peppers and onions and one of the very few foods I enjoy yellow mustard on. This is the best late night drunk food around. We recently moved away from the UIC area and still find ourselves inexplicably craving Jim's from time to time in the middle of the night. That being said, do yourself a favor and order a fish sandwich with everything (if you're nice, they sometimes won't charge you for the cheese slice!) and a Polish. I've had times where I've ordered extra fries and they've just thrown in like 3 extra bags (no lie) so I ended up with 4 bags of fries. Get a cheese cup for your fries! If you bring your UIC ID, they'll give you a free pop with any sandwich purchase. Also, just FYI, all sandwiches come with a free side of fries. read more

It's good. Really good. Best food in the Maxwell/Halsted area. Only trick is finding it - it's hidden behind the parking structure on Maxwell, on Union street along the freeway. For whatever reason, some of the locals do not like hot dog stands, so they have stuck Jim's and Express Grill out on Union street. Was searching high and low for a real good 'Chicago' hot dog to treat a friend whose goal was to find one. The hubs remembers the best was from a little cart in Grant Park...but due to the BofA Marathon, the cart was no where to be found. Asked a handful of locals and received several responses, including Portillo's (which I could get at Knott's.. pass), Shake Shack (whose known for their burgers.... not hot dogs.. another PASS), and finally a place called Jimmy's... which I think is actually Jim's Original Hot Dog. YUMMY! A perfectly cooked dog, with just the right amount of toppings... nothing over powering the rest of the ingredients... a nearly perfect, well balanced Chicago dog! I've been coming here since I was in 4th grade (roughly 17 years), and this place will always have a special place in my stomach. I usually go with the cheeseburger and hot dog, but the polishes are good as well. For people that don't like mustard or fried onions; this place is not for you (you may want to munch on someone else's fries though). The fries are great now (much better than the previous kind), and you can still eat a great dog/burger/polish/pork chop with drink and fries for roughly $5 (or less). Can't beat that. Pretty much the best late night food stop after a long night of drunken shenanigans. My personal favorite is the pork chop with everything plus cheese. A couple of those spicy pickled peppers and fries completes the grease coating in the stomach to prevent those nasty burning hangover stomach pains. Cost used to be a lot cheaper back in the day when they were at the old location. Before the entire area was plowed and rebuilt and property value magically escalated to standard ridiculous levels of Chicago property value. I miss the scary ass ghetto location. Talking trash with the DVD and sock vendors and avoiding eye contact with gangsters from the hood packing heat. The fries were better back then too. Even though prices have damn near doubled and the original flavor is lost, I still love this place after a drunken night in the city. To be fair, I was in a sour mood when I ordered my Maxwell Street Polish Sausage. But regardless, I will enjoy food no matter how crappy of a mood I am in... Ain't no hot dog like a Jim's Original Hot dog. I am not a huge fan of hot dogs, because one, it is usually on a black list among other things like donuts. However, today was different. My younger brother raved about it, and I thought, whats soooo great about this dog. So we went to go check out the place and I saw a simple menu, for a relatively good deal. I mean, each order included fries and that was great in itself. So here is what I ordered: Polish Hot dog with Fries How did it taste? -Moist, juicy, a little spicy, can definitely taste the pork and the the polish sausage was pretty big. I liked the grilled onions garnished on it and overall, the bread was simple, but the concotion of mustard, onions, bread and the sausage was delicious. Fries were mediocre. Very greasy and they weren't crispy. They had a battered taste to it and they weren't anything to rave much about. So, because the polish hot dogs were so delicious and the speedy service, on top of an affordable meal, I say "Woohoo to Jim's" for winning my vote. P.S. I am now going to go lay down now. My heart is slowing down a bit. I probably should eat veggies tomorrow to detox. read more

Gulp ! I can't believe it. I stopped by after a doctor's visit at the Medical Center. Because I was in the hood, I thought I 'd grab a Polish... just like the old days when I used to work the Maxwell St area. I used to love the Maxwell St Polish and ate them all the time. That was decades ago at the original Jimmy's. In those days the Polish was umm umm good. Today, not so good. Plus, the Polish was served on a HOT DOG BUN ! The service was fast & furious. But the quality of the Polish has diminished greatly. What a shame. But I still gave it 2 stars ... Just for old times sake. The original Jimmy must be rolling over in his grave. I just recently got back from my first trip to Chicago and everyone recommended I go to Jim's Original for a polish. Unfortunately my high hopes were let down because in my opinion it was just okay. The best thing about the place was the free French fries you get with the sandwich. After the wait in line I was hoping that it would have a little more flavor but unfortunately it didn't. This is the spot for late drunk food!! Never fails that after leaving Lalos I stop here for a polish or a burger! Food is always on point and the service is really fast!! You're barely ordering when they are already packing up your food.. it's insane! I always ask for the hot peppers since they are really good and truly have a kick! It's a yelp cliche, but I gotta say it: I don't get the hype over this place. Gruff service. The fries are greasy and terrible. The hot dog is good but the bun and toppings are horrible. The bun gets soggy and flat in seconds and the toppings are not good quality. The polish sausage is good but the bun and toppings again suck. However, this place is very cheap. I love this place. The polish is solid, and the fish sandwich is great. Think a better version of McDonalds Fish-filet(which is awesome in its own right). Make sure you ask for grilled onions on the fish sandwich because sometimes they forget/don't put it on. The only thing that takes away from this experience is the heartburn I experience later. The only thing I would change is how they include fries with everything. I usually get two things, the aforementioned fish sandwich and polish, and two fries is just too much. If I could get two sandwiches, and 1 fries, and they'd knock off even 50 cents for the fries, i'd do it. read more

Cheap, Greasy, and Fast!! The fries are awesome here and come free with any sandwich you order. If your a student, they hook you up with a 10% discount and free pop to boot. They don't have tables but these standing ledges where you can bump elbows with the rest of the people eating. Gotta love that. Walk around the area and you'll smell the fried goodness. GROSS Just straight up dirty... The guys who you order from are honestly weird. The best thing that i had there were the extra grilled onions... those were AMAZING! Ill give them credit on there pork - chop sand which it was not bad. I sampled the hotdog, polish dog and porkchop sandwich. I was amazed at how QUICK they put the order together. Like watching a machine! The hot dog was my fav in that it was simply a good tasting sausage. I think the polish dog at costcos tastes better...and the porkchop was really bland. It def. needed the toppings to give it something worth chewing. I can see why it's a popular late night stop- but that's about the only time I'd want to go...though I'd prefer Mc D's if given the option. =) read more
