I'm so glad I found this place!…read more One cold, sunny Sunday I was in the mood for a walk along the river, some hearty soup, and a peaceful place to read my book. Then up pops coffee al volo on my Yelp page, as if it were meant to be. For me, this cafe has all the comforts of home. The staff are warm and friendly, the food is made with love, and you don't feel guilty for staying for a couple hours to read, chat, or study. Each time I've gone I've seen people there with friends, family, or by themselves; enjoying each other's company or catching up on some work. Overall it has a very welcoming, open, and comfy vibe. As much as I love exploring cafes around the city, I've also been searching for my go-to, all-in-one cafe. Finally, I think I've found it! Definitely becoming one of my weekend staples.

Yes, sometimes we would drink during the week and I would pull an all nighter around Grindelallee and would jump onto the U3 to go home and shower then head to University for classes. Anyways, this coffee shop is next to the U3 exit/entrance depending which direction you are headed and I quite like their coffee to go, friendly service and assortment of pasties ranging from light flakey croissants to more sweet treats like something similar of a cheese Danish. Croissants are delicious on a universal scale of consistency, you know what to expect, light, buttery, flakey, soft, fluffy and basically delicious calories. However, sometimes I find cheesecakes or any cream cheese pastry in Europe not quite as sweet as in the US, probably because we really go HEAVY on the sugar, but their pastries here were the perfect mixture of sweetness :) The prices are fair and its additionally a nice Cafe to sit in the mornings with a paper. It is also nice for a cake, they have lots of cakes here and all tasting very fresh, Mmmmm. Once I had something like a pumpkin/carrot cake with the creamiest frosting that I put in a to go bag but ended up eating it before I even made it to the UBahn entrance which is literally 1min walk outside the door, haha.... I really love Scandinavian themed coffee shops or bistros, when I first moved to Hamburg, I frequented many of these shops around the city.

I did not try any of their food offerings, but the nice man next to me seemed to truly enjoy his chocolate cake. Cafe Bohne is a perfect place for a cup of your favorite caffeinated beverage (all the standard espresso-based drinks are available plus filter coffee, hot chocolate and tea) plus an excellent slice of home-made cake. The seating area is rather small, but is helped by some tables and chairs in front of the building. The place is usually packed with people during weekends, and it also open on Sundays as of late. My only complaint is -- and it breaks my heart to say this, since I really like the place -- that the coffee does not really meet the expectations set by the nice surroundings and the impressive espresso machine. The espressos are somewhat bitter but still lacking in flavor. Fortunately they are served with a glass of water. Most customers seem to prefer their sugar with coffee and cream, so they probably don' t care.

If Pompeii had a cafe, it would look like this. They offer a variety of Portuguese desserts, including one of my all-time favorites - the Portuguese egg tart! Not surprisingly, you can also order coffee. The atmosphere is low-key with dim lighting - perfect for coffee chats one-on-one or for small quiet groups of people. The prices are affordable! One of my favorite parts of this cafe is their daily brunch buffet, which lasts all morning and is extremely affordable. And despite the low price, the quality of the buffet is outstanding - cheeses, meats, hot dishes, cakes, breads, eggs, cereal, yogurt, you name it, it's there. The other thing I like about going here is the variety of seating options. The location is pretty huge, so you will always find someplace to sit. You can choose to sit at a quiet and cozy back corner, a normal table at the front of the cafe, or even outdoors on sunny days. Whatever day or time of the day it is, there is always at least one reason to drop by here. I'm so glad it's in the neighborhood!
