The vibe is cool, but I have a lot of issues with the food. I think we've all gotten a little carried away with the whole "tapas" thing. I came here because the picture of the kimchi vodka rigatoni looked really good, but was disappointed to see how small the portion size is. Now, I think the tapas thing could have been cool - people could try a bunch of small dishes as they chat and drink. Yes, very cute. What's not cute is charging people full entree prices for a tiny portion and slapping the "tapas" label on it to justify it. I mean, no matter how you look at it, it's a tiny plate of pasta that you're charging $21 for. $21 is a price for a regular portion of pasta, not the kid's meal portion they served to us. It was good pasta though. Maybe a little runny but that's the least of its problems. And the Chimmelier KFC was some of the worst fried chicken I've ever had. It was so dry. It was essentially popcorn chicken - stuff I would expect from a Tastea (except Tastea's would taste better). And the biggest joke is that they're charging $25 for it. The Meat Jeon... it was a very good omelette. Like if you told me it was just eggs, I would've been like "oh this is a really good omelette." But this was the eggiest Jeon I've ever had. There was almost no flour content in it. I don't think you could call it a batter. It tasted like if you had nothing in your fridge and decided to crack some eggs in a bowl, whisk 'em up, and fry them with some bulgogi you had leftover in your fridge. With some sliced green onion on top. There, I just described to you exactly how it tasted. My drink was the Kace Study. I actually wanted to try the Makgeoli, but our server recommended this cocktail to me. It was ok. Soju with a hint of tea flavor without the biting feeling of alcohol with a stick of gummy bears in it. It was good. Very clean, but kinda simple. Lowkey I've made a better version using the peach tea in the pink pouches at Hmart and mixing it with peach soju. Service was decent. We were sat immediately. It was kinda hard to hear our server because it was so loud. I asked for recommendations but I couldn't hear a thing she said to me haha. We came here for dine LA and for the price it's pretty worth. You have butter potato chips as starters. The choice of perilla oil noodles, shrimp toast, or beef tartar as apps. The noodles were soo good. And then you have the option of salmon fried rice, kimchi vodka pasta, Korean fried chicken as the main. And for drinks that's apart of the menu you have the option of a list of alcohol (a full bottle of soju). We dined in a group of 4 so we were able to get one of everything. It's almost a shame my friends and I started our Saturday night at Jilli because our experience here set an insurmountable bar. Our party of 3 arrived to put our name down around 7:20 and were told it would be an hour's wait due to their extremely limited table (3-4) and bar (~9) seating options. After 45 minutes of milling around the area we popped back in and were seated at the bar. Colored neon lighting, lively conversation, and the intimate space create one of the most memorable eating surroundings I've had to date. Makgeolli Flight: 4 glasses of Korean rice wine. Favorites included the light and melony Sang and the muted, classic flavor of the Hana that was greatly enhanced when consumed with food. I personally wasn't a fan of the strong banana flavor of what I believe was the Angma and its very nasal burn. Wagyu Yukhoe: Standout dish of the night and my whole LA trip. House-fried chips inserted into a decadent cheese-dusted beef tartare, all sitting atop a layer of salty and tangy nori relish. Kevin, who I later found out was the owner, was delighted to discuss the process behind the seaweed sauce with me as I shared some of the other interesting ways I had consumed seaweed at other restaurants. Rigatoni alla Kimchi Vodka: hearty, spicy, and a wonderful accompaniment to the drinks. However, the concept isn't much more than a simple twist to a popular recipe and I would be more open to trying a different dish on my next visit. Kace Study Peach Ring Cocktail: This wasn't supposed to be available until the day after our visit, but Kevin was nice enough to make one for us to try that night in addition to another shot made with blue curacao! I stopped by here on Saturday evening and did not realize it was reservation only! I came solo and asked if there was seating for 1. They were unfortunately booked for the night. I asked the hostess, Hwang(sorry if I spelled your name wrong) who is so nice by the way, if I could take my food to go and she said that was fine! She even offered me her work station to sit while I waited and offered me some water and a drink. She made me feel very welcomed and made my experience there very pleasant. She gave me a recommendation for which makegolli to try and that was so good!!!!!! I can't remember the name of it but it started with an N and was like 12% alc lol. I ended up getting the summer burrata and ate that there because she recommended it would be better to eat there so it's still fresh!!! and took the tteokboki and rigatoni pasta to go. The summer burrata was so refreshing!! The prosciutto on top was very good. This was my first time trying the tteokboki so I wasn't sure what to expect with that. The rice cakes were perfectly chewy and the sauce was sweet. The kimchi rigatoni was my favorite and had a nice spicy kick to it. The atmosphere inside was more on the intimate side. Darker space and close seating arrangement. It is a smaller space but they have the tables set up in order to accommodate a lot of people. There is bar seating that sat what looked like 6 people. We visited Jilli on a Wednesday. The spot is very cute, parking is a bit of a challenge. A few of the items we wished to order such as the Old Fashion and the beef Wagyu were not available. We ordered the cucumber salad which was okay, nothing wild. We ordered the brisket scallion pancake which was an omelet with brisket inside. The Golbi short rib fries were amazing and the Kimchi Rigatoni was delicious. The Seoul Mule was very sweet and just tasted lile $17 juice. Service wasn't great, the waiters were busy giving each other noogies and tasting some drinks by swiping with their fingers and licking it. Weird and unprofessional. When I walked in, the dim lighting, candlelit corners, and friendly culture got me smiling. My party started with the waygu yukhoe which was a special beef tartare prepared with trout roe on Gochujang toast. It was a summery delight that packed a ton of flavor. The Chimmerlier KFC and rigatoni alla kimchi vodka pasta are the most popular dishes at Jilli. The chicken was extremely crispy, and I loved how flavorful they were on the inside. Partner and I came here after dinner and for late birthday celebration! Marvin was great at explaining the menu items, and the recommended fried chicken was bomb. It did take a while for fry up, so we got some crackers and tuna dip to munch on while we waited. Marvin came around at good times to check in on us (didn't need to nod awkwardly with full mouths at "Are you finding everything okay?"), and he definitely matched our energy for this low-key second dinner and made the experience very comfortable. We also got the makgeolli flight, and it deserves its own paragraph. The first two on the left are from Sang and Angma, and they had the more familiar profiles of makgeolli that I've tried - slightly sweet, fruity, and fragrant rice - while still distinct from each other. Angma's (I think "Two Flowers") had a bit more complexity. The Red Monkey was new to us; the red yeasted rice gives the drink a crimson / carmine color, and the drink has some rich floral notes and a silky mouthfeel. Lastly, the Omija (from Hana Makgeolli in NYC) was also pretty special. It's very dry, unlike the limited makgeolli I've had in the past, and the bubbles are very fine and tingly. It pairs fantastically with the fried chicken, and I could see it being great with any of the fried dishes on the menu. Overall, I think the experience is unique and enjoyable enough to justify the slightly higher price point. Important note that reservations seem to be practically required to get a table, at least on the weekends. We had a reservation this time and were seated pretty quickly; we had walked by here a few weeks ago, but it was about a 90 minute wait for the next open table. read more

No, but they were sure tasty. The shrimp toast in particular was my fave. It's a crispy piece of toast topped with minced shrimp and deep fried until perfection. I also loved the rigatoni alla kimchi vodka because it tasted familiar, but that kimchi slides in there and gives the pasta a big ole kick. Contrary to other reviews, I felt like everything was reasonably priced, if not on the cheaper end. You get A LOT of shrimp toast for $13. And the Chimmelier KFC is generously proportioned for only $20 bucks. It takes tremendous effort to dine at Jilli. Parking in this part of Ktown is pretty much nonexistent especially on a Friday night. And again, it takes tremendous effort to converse once inside. It is. So. Damn. Loud. Jilli is so up my alley it feels a little like it was made specifically for me, a second-gen Korean Angeleno who loves alcohol and lives 15 minutes away on foot. I do think it's also great for you, though, a person on Yelp looking for a fun place to eat and drink in Koreatown. I went with three girlfriends last week, and I found it pretty ideal for a leisurely Wednesday night catch-up dinner. The restaurant was small--Jilli occupies the slim 6th Street slot that used to house an old favorite of mine, Sushi One--with cute decor and a comfortable atmosphere in keeping with the modern suljip concept. You might think of Jilli as a Korean American wine bar or izakaya, where the food is meant to be eaten with booze. It definitely reminded me of Korea, where every bar is also a late-night restaurant. Service was friendly and attentive. Our waiter took care of us when we needed her and left us alone when we didn't. We ended up hanging out for over three hours, until close to 11, when we were gently told the place was closing. This seemed reasonable, though I do see that the listed hours are 6PM-11PM on Wednesday nights, so we weren't unduly lingering. Jilli offers beer, wine, makgeolli, and soju, as well as a handful of low-ABV cocktails. We drank Hana Makgeolli Yakju, a fruity rice wine made in Brooklyn, and good old Chamisul Fresh, which we got with lime wedges. The food was fantastic and easy to share. The honey butter chips were addictive, sweet and salty homemade potato chips with honey butter. I loved the tuna dip and trout roe, which came with Ace and Charm crackers, still in their distinctive packaging. The shrimp toast might have been my favorite dish of the night, and also the least Korean (honey butter chips = super Korean). These were crispy, deep-fried squares of toast made with chopped shrimp and white bread, served with lime and a chili vinaigrette for dunking. I also enjoyed the cucumber salad, an elevated banchan with crunchy cucumber drizzled with a spicy, vinegary gochujang dressing. Of the larger items, I would highly recommend the uni tteokbokki, a unique, delicious take on the ultimate Korean street food. The fried rice cakes were chewy but soft, and I loved the creamy, briny uni butter sauce, heightened with parmesan and bright bursts of smoked trout roe. The salmon fried rice was another winner, fluffy and flavorful, with egg, soy-cured salmon, scallion, and seaweed. The only miss was the Chimmelier KFC. I guess this used to be made with wings, but it was "K-popcorn chicken" last week. Not dreadful, but bland and dry as Korean fried chicken goes. I did like the accompanying yangyum sauce and soy vin pickles. There were no desserts on offer, not that we needed them (though I just want to point out that honey butter chips and ice cream are a classic combination). We finished our Chamisul instead. Our reservation was at 6:30 PM, and we got there a little early at 6:25 PM. They seated us right away, and since we already knew what we wanted, we ordered pretty quickly. The space is pretty small, it almost feels crammed. If you want an intimate dinner for a date night, this is NOT the place for you. If you're looking for fun vibe Friday night, jilli is a good time. I'm torn. Such an aesthetic place with great vibes. Some of the food items on the menu were a hit or miss though. Got the shrimp toast which was amazing. So much shrimp and it cakes in giant chunks and a spicy may like sauce to compliment it. Was a bit oily but it was also perfectly crispy. The kimchi rigatoni was amazing also. Flavors paired really well and the kimchi didn't overpower the dish. The cheese on top was also light and creamy without being too sharp. Everything was mild but in the best way. Also my first time eating pasta with chopsticks. The fried chicken in the other hand was very disappointing. Dry, white meat with no flavor. Feel like they prioritized looks than taste. We also got a not so good sitting spot with the view of behind the counter/kitchen. There is also one seat that faces outside with the view of waiting customers. Every other spot seems good though. The atmosphere was very cool and the staff was laid back and kind. They showed some hustle as we saw the chef prep a lot of the food. The food was delicious, and the rice wine flight was amazing! I'd highly recommend this spot, and head to HLA for Afters and dessert! read more

Pretty good food and service. Nice, chill vibe with pop / hip hop music. Good: Service was great once we were seated. We ordered the DineLA menu. Wagyu Yukoe and Shrimp Toast were the best. The Takju was served in a tea pot and drinking bowl, and we love it! Bad: We made the reservation for 9pm and we arrived on time. Still waited 15-20min before we get seated. A real modern twist to Korean food! I came here twice this month- just had to introduce my friends to this spot. Don't underestimate this spot, it's really small but the food is amazing. They have a small selection of makeogli, I really like Korean rice wine so I highly recommend to check those out. The must order here is the rigatoni alla kimchi vodka. I've never had pasta like this before. The flavor of the sauce is so rich and unique. Another must have is the Chimmelier Korean Fried Chicken, very juicy white meat served with a complimentary dipping sauce. The portion for the chicken is so generous too, love it! The K bruschetta stands out as well because the kimchi adds a touch of freshness to the burrata. The second time I tried the cheese curds and my friend was obsessed. Personally I don't eat seafood but my friends enjoyed the shrimp toast as well as the scallop pasta. Again, cannot emphasize on the very generous portions! 4.5 on 5. Saving 0.5 in hopes of coming back to try their normal menu and cocktails. (Kidding, 5/5). Oh the food here is delectable! Spectacular, wipe the plate clean. We went in for a jilli* hibi menu, first off they were so prompt and kind to respond on ig that they would accommodate dietary restrictions and after check in, they did without any double takes or cutting corners. I love this place. Love! The menu featured a hash brown w uni, hamachi plate, cod, pork jowl, and dessert for $85. For pescatarian (me), they switched the pork with a huge serving of fish (tempted to say it was halibut?). For the vegetarian (he), the hash brown was served w a separate veg topping, the fried cod was swapped for a generous serving of korean agedashi tofu variant and my partner (who is not the biggest tofu lover) had it like it in under 2 secs as one bite! They also gave us a fruit plate w dessert not knowing if dairy was ok (who does that, they are ridiculously lovely!) Portions flavors service everything was beyond amazing. I am a mixology girlie who didn't anticipate a closed bar w only soju and makgoelli but even so, we had a wonderful meal and tried wonderful things.
