Taste and presentation-wise, Jenny's used to be one of the best Banh Mi in Melbourne. But the quality seems to have declined as time has passed. It used to be located in Burke Road, and the change seems to have occurred at about the same time as they moved to their current location.
Jenny's Chicken Skewer Satay Banh Mi used to be an amazing combination of chicken skewer, fresh herbs, recently prepared vegetables, and home-pickled carrot nestled in an amazing bun, covered in a tasty peanut sauce. It even came with the spectacle of watching a small Vietnamese woman forcefully removing the bamboo skewer from the middle of the sandwich without disturbing its delicate composition.
But now? The meat is often chewy and somewhat oily; the chilli has gone from being freshly sliced to a sambal olek-like paste or similar; and the pickled carrot looks to be prepared in industrial quantities several days beforehand, where previously it was much fresher.
If rough, quick, and cheap is your thing, then you'll probably love the banh mi and the pie/pastie/sausage roll selection. Sad as I am, I can't give it more than two stars. read more
