This is Limoges' main food market, situated in the heart of the old town, next to the square named…read moreafter the castle which once stood here.
The market building was built between 1885 and 1889, and is an attractive building of steel construction, infilled with brick. The exterior has a frieze of enamel plaques depicting the products sold in the market. It has been designated as a national monument.
The food here is, as you might expect, of excellent quality, though it is a little expensive: there are butchers, fishmongers, greengrocers, cheesemongers, bakers, chocolatiers and patisserie stalls, as well as a small cafe. Of particular interest to me were the wide range of fresh and dried mushrooms on offer.
It's a good place to buy presents for folks back home (but think twice before buying some of the riper cheeses, unless you want to attract attention).
