The bar has fallen pretty low at JcPenny for the last few years. Cashiers do not even bother to attempt having manners or anything resembling customer service skills. Honestly I don't shop there too much anymore and wasn't surprised by the ever dwindling service.
On mother's day we stopped in so my husband could buy a few things for a sudden work trip. I fully expected a packed store and even worse customer service due to the holiday. The check out at menswear was fully staffed with lines wrapping back to shoes. We checked back in the women's department to find three cashiers and light lines. Great.
We got in line and when the customer in front of us was checked out, the woman at the register smiled at us and....walked away. At first she kind of went in the same direction as the man. I thought maybe she was showing him something. It never occurred to me she would acknowledge me and then walk away and not come back. Which is exactly what she did.
After she walked around the sales counter towards Sephora she stopped to talk to another customer. Ok I thought, she's helping on the floor. Then it became obvious through hugs and excited chatter that she bolted from the checkout area because she saw someone she knew. She stood there talking to two women for like 15 minutes.
I had gotten the drift and switched to the other lines, which had already filled up some because I was left standing at the other side of the counter....and by the time I got into a different line, several people were in line in front of me. I kept my eye on my ex-cashier because I full intended to walk up to her and get her name.
By the time I was checked out, she was no where to be found. I trekked all over the store to find her and get her name. Nothing. I was going to call and complain but it struck me that the only person who would have the means to abandon a register and then disappear was a manager. Hence, online review.
The woman in question was middle age, shorter than average (maybe 5' 5"), with glasses and reddish brown hair that could only be described as somewhere between Progressive's Flo and Peggy Bundy. I mean no disrespect in that it's just a huge well manicured up-do that I am sure will help management identify her.
Really disappointed. When JcPenny's goes out of business, as many mall stores are, I'm going to find it hard to feel bad for them. Meanwhile Boscov's people are super helpful. read more
