Steve indicated that he had a problem with his software provider and didn't submit a complete tax return. Steve indicated that I should ignore the letter and the balance would go away. In September, I was contacted again by the VA Dept of Taxation indicating that I still owed money, and VA was pursuing collections and/or garnishing my wages. It was a small amount, so I just paid it. I told Steve I was upset by several errors in my state taxes (hasn't happened to me in 18 years of self-filing). Steve said he didn't understand why I was upset. He did offer to pay the small amount of overdue taxes. For me, I have 2 expectations for tax prep: file on time and accurately. Steve was 0 for 2.

It required me following up to get an update. And then I had specifically asked for a heads up on whether we were likely to owe any taxes, since we were self-employed the past year and unclear whether we were paying sufficient estimated taxes. In the end, I got a response a couple of days before taxes were due to be filed with a report that we $12K in taxes. There was a potential to open an IRA to lowering our tax liability but with no guidance on how to do that and only 2 days to spare we just paid the bill. I would not recommend working with these folks. They seem like nice enough people but were either overwhelmed this tax season or understaffed. Either way, that exactly what you count on a tax account to be prepared for and they clearly failed.

Short-version: Jeff Lipsey is simply the best…read more Long-version: I typically do my personal income taxes myself and have never had to file business income taxes before. I'm also one of those horrible last-minute filers. So it was that I realized at 5pm on Friday, April 12th (before the April 15th tax deadline, mind you) that I needed to file a D-30 Unincorporated Business Franchise Tax Return for my the AirBnB I began in 2018. I frantically called various CPAs throughout the DMV to try to get some advice on my D-30 situation (at 5:30pm on a Friday). No luck. Then I found the Lipsey and Associates blog post on AirBnB and casual rental income, which was very helpful in itself. And then I sent a horribly long e-mail explaining my situation to Jeff Lipsey and asking for his advice. At 6pm on the Friday before Tax Day. Most people would have probably just laughed at my e-mail and then gone back to enjoying their weekend. But not Jeff. He responded to my e-mail within 12 hours, and then answered my follow-up questions in less than an hour!!! As a result, I was able to deduct more business expenses and ended up netting almost $2,000, as compared to the tax returns I prepared prior to receiving Jeff's advice. However this past year he dodged my emails/phone calls, my husband's emails/phone calls, and my elderly mother's emails/phone calls (we all file separately). He once picked up the phone and then pretended to be someone else when he realized I was calling for an update on my taxes. He lied to us about filing for an extension and took forms from my mother that he never returned. Ultimately he stopped replying entirely and we had to look for a new accountant, several months after the filing deadline. I just got a notice that I owe several thousand dollars in late filing fees because it turns out he also lied about getting an extension. I don't know what is going on and while I wish Steven no ill will, please do not work with this firm or him. I don't want this to happen to anyone else.

Let me detail my experience below: December 16, 2019: Send an inquiry through their website asking about availability for new clients. Receive a response from Steven that they're currently evaluating their capacity and will get back to me in a week. I respond immediately asking if I should follow up in a week or if they'll let me know? *CRICKETS* December 26, 2019: Ask for an update. Hear nothing, follow up with an inquiry through their website December 31, 2019: Receive a response from Steven apologizing for letting this slip through the cracks. They have room for new clients and ask for information. I respond an hour later with the information. *CRICKETS* January 19, 2019: Another follow up. Ask for an update. *CRICKETS* January 31, 2019: I give up.
