Looks like a cute little family owned business on the outside and the inside was even more inviting. Great atmosphere, plenty of space, and the staff was absolutely wonderful. The food was really delicious. I went with my husband for our honeymoon and we had gotten the octopus special and sticky ribs as appetizers and then I got the scallops with risotto for dinner and my husband got the ribeye. Quite possibly the best meal I've ever had at Jay's ( or another on 7 mile island for that matter. We usually get the scallops and the filet which are always delicious but having tried the steamed catch ( halibut ) and the ribeye we will definitely order those dishes next time as well. The broth for the halibut was out of this world and all the accompaniments for the perfectly medium rare ribeye were so flavorful! Jay's is one of the most consistently good dining experiences in Stone Harbor. A shame that Covid has hit all local businesses so hard with seemingly little local leadership. Why the county and borough haven't removed a few parking spaces to give restaurants more outdoor tables is asinine. Thank God one of the neighbors stepped in to offer their property when the government dropped the ball. We had a delightful outdoor candlelit table. Coming here has been like visiting with family and the food quality is always eclectic and delicious. My family swears by the Pad Thai, a true testament to the chef's family heritage. I prefer the specials. We had a wonderful cold soup with melon and crab - fantastic. The charred octopus was outstanding and came with a mix of interesting flavors in a tasty relish that included fresh hearts of palm. I had never had fresh hearts of palm. I tried a red snapper special that was fantastic. Note: You have to bring your own wine. Definitely worth a visit. read more

Pricey and small restaurant but very good food. Also expensive - entrees are over $30. But the food was very good. I got the scallops, which were excellent - broiled with a bit of crispy brown and nicely firm and chewy. I scraped off the citrus foam, because that is not my thing. I also got the fingerling potatoes, which were excellent - flavorful, dense and crisp. Oh I forgot - gazpacho to start. Very good. A nice melange of flavors and perfect summer soup. Went here for the first time this week and was very impressed!! They are taking proper precautions with covid-19 as well! The service was great and so was the food! The hoisin sticky spare ribs are a must, so tender and delicious. The short rib fried rice was delicious and fresh but I needed to add extra soy sauce for some more flavor. My mom got the shrimp pad Thai and it was delicious. And the dessert was perfect for the end of the meal, not overly heavy! This is the first time I have eaten here because we can never get a reservation and now I know why. The food and service were excellent. It is a small menu because everything is home made including their dressing and sauces. Steamed halibut, shrimp pad Thai, ceased salad, broccolini appetizer, everyone in our party loved their meal. I went here with my boyfriend's family; we were a party of nine, in total. This restaurant is one of the more elegant places in close proximity to their vacation suite. The evening ambiance was very pleasant. The BYOB aspect was also a nice touch. We were immediately given ice buckets for our white wine. The servers were professional, but not super friendly. Still, I must say, the food was divine. I ordered Bay Scallops & Mushroom Risotto. The presentation and taste were both spectacular. My only complaint, a large one, is that our food was brought out very sporadically. Some people were eating their meals before others had even been given their appetizers. In addition, one of the "late" dishes was partially uncooked--the chef was clearly trying to rush. Jays on Third is a solid 4.5. I ate here all summer long and I'm a little upset with myself that I didn't eat here before this year. The food is exquisite and I really love the atmosphere. We had 4 different servers on our 4 visits this summer and every one of them was professional and knowledgeable. We prefer the high tops in the window so if you want to follow our lead you'll have to plan ahead. The hostess team was friendly and professional. Now onto the food. The food is delicious. On our four visits we pretty much ate a variety of menu items and specials. My reason for the .5 is that some of the items are a little on the small side (but really tasty) and the specials didn't seem to change between our visits. So here's what we had as I recall: The foie gras special: this was my most disappointing item all summer. Was it tasty? Most definitely. Was it tiny? Most definitely. The scallops that accompanied them were at least sliced in half and the foie gras was small. The short ribs: a real nice size piece, totally delicious. I definitely would get again. Grilled octopus: ridiculously great. The octopus was soft and tasty and was accompanied with pineapple. I also tried the gazpacho with crab which was delicious and the crab fritters which we loved. Finally, a routine side was the grilled broccolini and brussel sprouts: don't be afraid of the brussel sprouts this side is delicious. The entrees were all nice sizes but sometimes the daily fish was a little smaller than I'd like. Nothing to complain about, I just like super large portions. I tried the salmon twice, I had their ribeye special topped with a caramelized onion with shishito peppers, and their filet. All were tasty, beautifully prepared with interesting combinations, and looked picture perfect. We did catch on to add the grilled broccolini as a side for our entrees. If you save room for dessert, get the seasonal fruit. We loved Jays on Third. It's perfect for date night. You will love it too. read more

Food issues in a moment. Our friends love this restaurant and usually sit in the original room; we sat in the former tarot reading store room. There was another party that was so loud that we could not hear ourselves talking...literally! And they got louder as the meal proceeded. I finally asked the manager to please get them to quiet down. She sent over the waiter and was told either fxxx you or fxxx the other customer and continued as loudly as before. The manager should not have sent over the waiter but gone herself. Probably killed the waiters tip. As we left, I felt compelled to say something myself. I told them I they were the most fxxxing rude people I had encountered for being so loud in the restaurant and ignore the request for quiet. Their response was (unfortunately in kind) fxxx you and one of the table making shooing motions. As I walked out I told the manager that I would not voluntarily return to the restaurant. Don't know about our friends. Food For appetizers, I ordered oysters. I forget where they came from, but the strong muscle was not cut through and they were flat...deflated. I don't think that is normal for freshly open oysters. I didn't get sick from them but they were boring. The boneless ribs were very fatty. For main courses, a friend ordered the pork chop that he relished altho he said the accompanying risotto as boring. I ordered a fillet that was perfectly cooked (rare) but there was some green sauce under the garlic sauce that was vile. I didn't want to have my dinner redone so I just scraped it off. Fillets are usually pretty tasteless and so was mine, despite the perfect cooking but it was the only beef that was under 14 oz. I forget the rest of the dinner. read more

Let me start this review by saying that I never send food back. Even if there is hair in my food I will just eat around it. I asked the waiter if there were any vegan options and he said they had an off-menu risotto so I ordered that. The "risotto" that was served to me was so bad at Jay's I just couldn't eat it. It was a watery rice soup with random vegetables. The waiter did not come to our table at all while this sat in front of me, so I just had to wait while everyone else ate. We had to ask a busboy to send our waiter over. By the time the waiter came over, everyone had already finished eating. I told him that I didn't know what this dish was but it wasn't risotto. The waiter then tried to tell me that the problem was that usually they make risotto with cream so they had no choice but to serve me watery risotto. No one is forcing them to have risotto as their vegan option so they could easily make a different dish. I asked the waiter to just take it off the bill, and he said he would see. If I wouldn't have asked, they would have charged us $22 for this. There are lots of good restaurants in Stone Harbor that are willing to accommodate vegans but this isn't one. Save your money and go anywhere else. It's too bad because this incident put a damper on our whole night. read more

My family and I came here on Father's Day and it was really wonderful. We found out through the hostess (who is also the half owner Anne) that the chef jay was actually the out for Father's Day. The food was still incredible. I had the pork chop, family members had the steak and shrimp special, scallops, and the others had the grouper special. Everything was incredible. Emma our waitress was extremely patient and polite even when we had multiple bottles of wine! It is a byob but the environment and staff is incredible and I can not recommend Jays enough! Oh! Went this week and sat outside during the covid period. We were celebrating a birthday and this restaurant is byob. Hostess very friendly and sat us on the sidewalk. Started with the peach gazpacho and it was very good. Second course was the tuna rolls and they were a great portion although twenty dollars I believe. Third course was the scallops with corn risotto, cooked well and hot. They surprised us at the end while singing happy birthday and giving us two free desserts. Great place. Not a lot of choices in Stone Harbor in the off season, but this place is a gem. Menu is eclectic so you can bring people who like beef, pork, seafood -- even Thai. They don't offer so much variety that they try to do everything well. A nice varied and manageable menu. Everything was DELICIOUS and reasonably priced. It's BYOB, so come prepared. We were lucky to be down here with some good friends and couldn't have picked a better place for conversation and excellent food. Staff kept the "and how is everything this evening?" nonsense to a minimum. Enough to know they cared; not so much that you wanted to bounce a whole wheat roll off their foreheads. Although several of our appetizers and entrees were quite good - the arugula salad, clams, scallops, and snapper, particularly - I feel obliged to comment on an unsatisfactory aspect of our dining experience. (In addition to the noise of the 2/3 filled dining room, that is; the restaurant could use some heavier fabrics to soak some of that noise up). We had two orders of the tenderloin, medium-rare, that were both overcooked and mis-butchered. Although my starving brother-in-law was able to power through his (with a pint of ice tea and 2 glasses of water to wash it down), I concluded that mine was essentially not worth eating. Our server checked in right after the food was served; had she checked again mid-meal, I may have sent it back (although always a trade-off knowing that I'll be eating alone by the time it is prepared again - often not worth it in a social setting). Both servings of the tenderloin paled in comparison to the aged beef special which had been prepared at medium-rare correctly. More importantly, when clearing, our otherwise attentive server failed to notice I had only taken 3 bites of the tenderloin while otherwise cleaning my plate. With the mandatory gratuity of 20% (we were a party of 7), this was particularly inexcusable. I left disappointed and hungry. read more

My wife and I went there for dinner last Sunday, while vacationing with family in Avalon. We were drawn to Jay's by the unique menu, something different than a lot of the classic seafood places down at the shore. It was a little quiet in the restaurant for a 7:30 reservation, which made us a little nervous. But no reason for that, we both really enjoyed our dinner. We started with the crab nachos and the duck confit sliders. The nachos were excellent, simple crab salad and pineapple salsa served on fried wontons. It was light, had a great mix of flavors and was good to share. The sliders were good too, altough I think there was a little too much hoisin bbq sauce on it. I would have preferred to taste the duck more - if you are going to put that much labor into making confit, don't hide that flavor with a sauce. For main courses, we shared the pad thai and the scallops over risotto. Scallop portion was large, 5 large perfectly cooked sea scallops over a corn and asparagus risotto. It was very good, but took a far back second place to the pad thai. It was outstanding, perfect mix of salty, sweet and sour easily the best I have had. Because we were hungry when we arrived, we also ordered the seaweed salad and truffle potatoes for sides. Completely unnecessary as the entree portions were plenty big. Seaweed was very good, definitely a step up from what you get at a typical sushi place. The potatoes were also delicious, but really didn't fit with what we ordered for dinner. We brought the leftover pad thai and potatoes home and they both reheated great the next day. With three kids and often a lot of family down at the same time, we don't often get out for dinner with just the two of us so Jay's was a nice treat. I am not sure I would bring my kids there since it was more of a fine dining restaurant but we will definitely be going back if we have the chance! read more

Jay's on Third just flat out nails it. Disregard the negative reviews of this top notch shore restaurant...great food and ambiance await you in this Stone Harbor, NJ upscale BYOB. I like to think of myself as a Greek hero of old on a quest to find the very best dining around. Unfortunately, this journey is replete with dangers and sometimes the occasional monster. This time, it was Medusa. The white tablecloth dining room is nicely appointed, with photos of areas in Thailand adorning the walls. The Chef is purportedly half Thai, and the menu definitely has this influence. Our very nice and attentive waiter Roy mentioned that the chef and his wife make regular trips there. Our steaming hot, freshly baked rolls showed up shortly after we sat down. I've never had such a hot roll; you literally couldn't pick them up. No matter; they are right out of the oven and they smelled so fresh it was worth the few seconds for them to cool down. We commented to each other about this, and the chef/owner's wife was helping set the table next to us. She stated loudly, "My, we're serving them hot rolls" in a condescending tone. Utterly bizarre. We dismissed it and moved on. I couldn't decide on several appetizers, so, like Perseus fighting the Hydra, I took on them all. The grilled Caesar salad was a nice twist on a familiar them, and the crispy calamari served with a lime-gin aioli dipping sauce was outstanding. The duck roll wrap was divine; confit duck served in a four tortilla with a salsa of hosin, peanut, and jalapeno jam...utter goodness. There are many excellent entree options, and I went with the Shrimp Pad Thai given the Thai background of the chef and decor. This dish was perfect; delicious jumbo shrimp in a bed of rice noodles, crispy fresh bean sprouts, green onion, and peanuts. Given my battle with Jay's offerings, I had no room for dessert. While I did succeed in slaying the appetizer Hydra, I avoided Medusa's gaze and instead focused on the bounty before me. Some adventures are worth the risk, so gird up your loins and head off to Jay's. read more

The food is amazing and always speaks for its self! However, the service on our recent visit was beyond disappointing! I have never heard foul language yelled out of a kitchen area at any restaurant ever. This did happen at our last visit. I was here celebrating a special event and towards the end of the night on of the workers started yelling profanity from the kitchen area. The hostess, who I believe is the Chef's wife, asked if we heard that and we hold her we did and it was not appropriate at all. The employee apologized to us. Then I basically got in an argument with her because bringing me a dessert does not fix the situation that left a sour taste in our mouth after such a beautiful dinner. Once she told me that the foul language was a part of working in a kitchen, this is what made me mad. No matter what, never say anything you would never want a customer to hear. After this went on for several minutes, the hostess was still not listening to what the problem was.
