A 3 star review of Java Spice by Lynda M.
Dinner here after the Laser light show ( which was excellent). The service was prompt and the atmosphere is great.
The food however didn't seem particularly like Thai that we've had many times elsewhere, including Thailand.
We had the money bags and Chicken Satay skewers for entree. The satay sauce was very dark and missing something. And the moneybags were smallish and seemed a little overcooked.
For mains we ordered the Penang curry chicken and chicken in mango. The chicken and mango was quite tasty. However the Penang chicken was very dark and not at all like the red creamy sauce in normally would expect to see. The chicken was very soft and there was plenty of food so no complaints there. Just the taste of the sauce was not true to the usual delicate flavours you would expect from Thai cooking.
As we were leaving we asked the maitre d' if the chef was Thai. He said the chef is actually from Bali which to me explains some of the difference in cooking style.
I would recommend going with an open mind as it may be a little disappointing that it's not a more traditional Thai style of cooking. read more
