I've been going here since I moved to golden hill. They have a huge selection of liquor & beer. Good selection of wine. Lots of non alcoholic options and snacks, ass well as house hold items you may need in a pinch. What I really appreciate is the water fill station they have in their parking lot. It's pretty obvious that this is family owned and they clearly work very hard which I want to acknowledge as well. That felt important to add some I see people calling the clerks rude. They are not rude in any way that I've experienced.. coming from NYC & being exposed to many cultures, it is very clear that the way they carry themselves is pure and similar to their middle eastern culture, which is just stern and to the point. Californians are accustomed to associating kindness with someone forcing a fake nice persona. They are people too, which means they are very much allowed to have bad days without acting excited every-time someone walks into their store.. because let's be real, no one is that excited that you came in to their store buy a few drinks.. read more

Went in to get a simple house key copied, the keys that were made didn't work. The older gentleman said if it doesn't work there's no way to fix it or remake. Why promote that you make keys but unable to make a simple copy? read more

Wine is always corked. It happens to me more then once. Cashier are rude and disrespectful. Specially the bold short man. Always argue and make you feel you shouldn't never get in the store. Go to Krisp, they have much better selection of drinks anyway. read more

Best of yet, I met Mike, who assumed was the owner but he was giving me advice on where to eat, what places to visits (since I'm not from Cali). Being a cashier at a market store is not difficult. You serve customers, run transactions, and you go home. You don't comment on a customer's appearance with harsh degrading words for absolutely NO reason at all. Even if you did not personally find it rude or give much thought into it. A person like that should not be considered an essential worker and get paid when there are others who can probably perform excellent customer service (a.k.a being a decent human being) and deserve that pay. Today at 4:00pm I went into Jaroco to get a couple drinks after leaving the Hospital with my sick brother. I grabbed a 20 out of my purse and ran in real quick. I picked out two sodas and headed up to the register to pay. When the cashier handed me my change I was surprised as he only gave me 55cents. I looked at him and said Sir can I please get the rest of my change. He responded no you gave me a $5. I thought there's no way I was just Looking at the $20 in my hand! He said call back Monday and you can ask to look at the video camera. I walked out to the car and looked in my purse for the $20 cause I thought well shoot maybe I messed up. No $20 in there. I walked back in a politely asked if he could check his register for a $20 in the $5 tray or for a $20 in the tray that is slightly ripped at the top and a tad damp since I washed it that day. He refused to look! Then I asked for the number to call back and when. He gave me a card angrily and said well the owner isn't in until Wednesday! But he had just told me to call Monday! I asked for the owners name or who to talk to but he refused to give it to me. The cashier was so rude. I live all the way in East County and was only in that area to take my brother to the naval hospital! So now I have to drive all the way down there to get my other $15. I'm definitely following up with this cause I can't stand when people take advantage of others! read more

So I came in one Friday afternoon straight from work (looking spiffy in my uniform I might add), and asked the man behind the counter, "Do you give cash back?" and he's like, "There's an ATM in the front." "My bank will charge me." I said in reply. He then asks me how much I needed. I told him I only needed a 20 so I can buy pizza across the street. He says he could give me the money. The homies Sam and Brady always took care of me for the two years I lived in Golden Hill (I'd review the neighborhood if I could, because I love it--I only left because none of your business). They might come across rough, but they've come a long way to make a living in San Diego--a long way. Remember that. At liquor stores, the key is to be a good patron and show respect. This includes: knowing when to open your mouth and when to let things unfold on their own; understanding that liquor store clerks see a lot of claptrap day in, day out--a lot; and, of course, spending a lot of money on booze. These, my friends, are the Three Liquor Store Commandments. On to the hacks, then. Jaroco has the best price I've found on a fifth of Buffalo Trace or Wild Turkey, my spirits of choice. Go to the back refrigerator for the 2/$5 Redhook Longhammer IPA/ESB deal. Nag Champa up front alongside a pretty good selection of candies and chocolates. And though I don't often drink champagne, I like to buy quality when I do--Jaroco has a good selection of Moet bottles, among others. Limes are usually on the house for regulars. One thing: the ATM outside has a brain of its own, sometimes withdraws into itself and refuses to give you cash (I know you need cash for Luigi's across the street). read more

Review #100. Phew. I debated how to celebrate this one ... another Coffee House? A new restraunt ... some running event ... and then it came to me ... Buddy's. Or as the rest of the world calls it Jaroco. Jaroco is on the corner of 25th and B, and I used to live cady corner to it in the large pink spanish revival building that is about to fall apart. Jaroco was a savior, a cornerstone of the community, and had some of the funniest employees ever. It was always good to go in and see one of the Buddies (that is what we called everyone who worked there), and it was reassuring that the world was safe. As for what they have? A very very impressive beer selection, and if there is something you want that they do not have ... well ... they take requests! AWESOME. They also had a nice wine selection, and a well stocked liquor section. Staples are few and far between but it is good for TP in a pinch, a snack of candy or chips ... and in desperate moments even milk and eggs ... though I never ventured to get eggs there. This is a beer place. And a good one at that. But more than that ... it is community. It is a fundamental part of my Golden Hill ... a Golden Hill I wish everyone could see, experience, and enjoy. Ok, here goes: My mom, sister, and I had dinner at a Mexican/Salvadorian restaurant a couple blocks away. That restaurant only accepts cash and their in-store ATM wasn't working. After we finish eating, my sister and I walk to the neighboring 7eleven to get cash back. They don't do cash back; matter of fact, they send us to the broke down ATM at the restaurant we were just in. Fail. We walk across the street to an ATM in a wall. Out of order. We go around the corner to a small market. Their ATM is also not functioning. Crap. We cross the street in hopes of finding another ATM or at least a place that offers cash back. Across the street is Jaroco Market with am ATM outside. Dude, it's out of order! So we go inside. I tried not to stare. I don't think I've ever seen such an extensive collection of alcohol before. Not outside a specialty store anyway. The name of the place says it's a market. I was expecting some alcohol, but not wall to wall, floor to ceiling amounts of fire water. After I've caught my breath, I ask the nice man behind the counter if he offers cash back. He does! Woot. He also lets it's know that there is an ATM outside. My sister tells him that none of those god forsaken machines work. He didn't know that his wasn't working. After we all have a good laugh, my sister and I manage to find a few nonalcoholic (because I didn't bring my ID, dammit) items to purchase; ice cream bars. If you want wine, beer, hard liquor, or any other type of alcohol, Jaroco is *the* place for it. Oh yeah. Be careful. Seems like there's some ATM STI bug going around. read more

Been living in the Golden Hill area since 2005. Have come here many times over the years. Have seen the place go through many changes. Walked in with my bike tonight- said hi to the shop owner and proceeded down the aisle to pick up a six pack. As I was walking I heard a loud shouting- couldn't really make out what he was saying- seeing that it was just me and two guys at the checkout out I thought is he shouting at me?? I turned and he yelled bike or something like that? I asked what the issue was in particular and he stated "I don't like bikes!" WTH?? I walked out and said I'm sorry you're having such a crappy day! There's a really nice liquor store right down the street- Golden Hill Liquor... I will be giving them all of my business from this point on and I suggest you do the same. It's a liquor store and that's about it. I mean, it is a pretty nice one but a liquor store none the less. Pretty good wine selection but I usually just swing by this place for the two Zico waters for $2 on my way to the office. The guy working is always really nice but I ALWAYS seem to show up when they are getting booze delivered from their supplier so I have waited longer than I should have at times. Can't knock them for that I suppose. The prices are about on par with what you would expect to pay from a liquor store so don't expect a great deal on daddy's cough syrup. After a few slices from Luigi's swing by Jaroco and grab yourself a tall boy or two before heading home to watch Ferris Beuller's day off. read more

I have been running up to Jaroco for this and that for over a decade now. So many memories..Party supplies, a jug of milk, cat food.. The flirty clerks have always cracked me up, way flirty but in a harmless way not an icky way. A little dirty, a little overpriced but what convenience store isn't? Impressive wine selection. Fun adventures over the years like nervous fish-out-of-water hipsters wandering over from the Turf or bums lighting their dumpster on fire. The latter being especially amusing considering that there is a fire station a block away and it still took them 20 minutes... I remain a loyal customer. :) read more

This place is great. I've lived in golden hill for about 5 years now, and this is probably the best market and probably a tie for 7-11 down on broadway. The only reason I would choose one over the other is because of distance of walking. The people that own/work here are awesome, very courteous and personable. Cigarettes and Beer and other munchies are priced correctly (as opposed to golden hill liquor which is overpriced imho). Not much else to say, it's a corner market. Since moving into the neighborhood about a month and a half ago, Jaroco has turned into my (at least) once a week stop for beer runs. They don't always have the most amazing prices (not to say that their prices are *super* high, just not super low), but they DO have a pretty fantastic selection. They also have a lot of the mini airline bottles, always a good think to stock up on right before a movie. ;) There's an ATM out front, but you can get cash back with a purchase, too. Unlike Jerry D., I've not been charged for this privilege and, in fact, in was offered as a service to me when the cashier overheard me and my boyfriend talking about needing cash. Service is always friendly. The store is big and roomy, not cramped like the standard neighborhood liquor store. read more

I'm a huge fan of Jaroco Market and the guys who work there. They are always so nice to me and my friends when we stop in, give my friend's dog treats, and have an awesome selection of wine and booze. Also, they always offer to give us a lighter whenever we buy cigarettes. I really hate how 7-11s won't even give you matches anymore and make you buy a lighter for nearly $2. It's a little things that the guys at Jaroco do that makes a huge difference in my opinion. The only reason I can't give them 5 stars is that the wine prices are insanely high. While the selection is impressive for a corner liquor store, and I understand that of course it will be pricier than a supermarket, sometimes it really hurts to pay their prices. Also, they're only open unitl 11pm and I think staying open until midnight would be a huge plus. read more

This place looks great - they just finished a little renovation inside. It's much more organized and clean looking. The three guys that work here are really cool and remember their customers. There's a parking lot around the side off 25th. They actually have a great selection of all kinds of liquor and wine. Prices aren't bad either. Definitely a convenient place. read more

Who knew they made keys?? I love this store! Its within walking distance, they have all of the basic necessities (refreshments, gum, eggs, chips) and some random other items I buy (organic blueberries, soy milk, flat taco shell.) They also have an ATM out front and I just found out this past weekend that they made keys. Like they can copy your house keys. Who knew? The guys in the store are always really friendly and I'm amazed by how well mannered the dogs are that they bring to the store for company (protection?) who hang out behind the register. They also always seem to have a variety of new novelty liquors everytime I'm in there. Why hasn't someone bought the AK-47 of tequilla by the register yet? Only complaint? They sell $2 gum for $1. Oh well, its worth the extra $1 to not have to drive to a different store. read more

I wish I could give no stars. The one star is given because the beer and wine selection was descent. Walked in looking for a beer to bring home and the beer selection looked good, but at a closer glance I couldn't find anything because of the organization. I went to the cashier and asked how the beer was organized...the cashier didn't seem to understand, so I politely clarified, "is the beer organized by style or is it alphabetical?" He rudely snapped at me and said, "figure it out." Mind you, I was not a drunk passer-by and I had only been in the store for about a minute. I grabbed a beer I was familiar with but because there was apparently no organization (the first letter of the beer is grouped but the letters are out of order) I wasn't about to search for an hour for a new one. When I went to check out the cashier mumbled an instruction to swipe my card and when I did he yelled that he said to "(I said) stick it in to the machine!!" (his card reader used a chip). I have never been so insulted by an employee of a store that I was spending my money at. I will never go back here. This guy was disgustingly rude and inappropriate. read more

I love Jaroco. If I could be the mayor, I would. These guys are always helpful and chipper. The one guy with the pitbulls told me of a great deal on vodka and i've been hooked ever since. Used to frequent this place when I lived in Golden Hills.. The employees here are hella cool.. Good Selection of beer, wine and liquor.. Place was recently remodeled so it looks much better than it once did.. Only cons are, closes early on the weekend and fee they charge to use debit/credit under $5.. read more

The outside of this place is somewhat deceiving. They have an impressive selection of beverages, especially nonalcoholic beverages. They have a wide variety of quality juices, drinks, bottled water, wine, beer, and spirits (for example, they carry Virgil's Real Cola, which is hard to find outside of a Henry's or Whole Foods). They also have some snack foods and household goods. I really only have two minor issues with this place. First, the prices were rather unimpressive (that is, they were somewhat high). Perhaps it would be worthwhile to consider having sales once in a while. Second, the store's layout is far from obvious. Some clear indicators (like large signs on the walls, aisles, or hanging from the ceiling) would help customers more easily navigate the store. Overall, though, I'm happy to have this market and its selection available nearby. read more

The dude behind the register tonight was a straight D!€k. They have a ATM out front that we've used many times to get cash to grab pizza across the street at Luigi's which is cash only. Tonight, the atm wasn't working so we decided to ask if they give cash back. At first, the guy gave us a look like he didn't want to but then asks, "How much do you need?" $10 bucks we say. "Ok" he says. Never once did he mention a fee so we just presumed we had to buy something. We go get a monster energy drink for the next day which was $3. As we get to the register he says, "It's $2 for the cash back, is that ok?" Uh no... Im like, "we're buying something." He says, "I know, but I still need to charge you for the cash back." I proceed to put back the drink and say, "That's crazy, Im buying a $3 drink and have to give you $2 as well. That's a total of $5 to get $10 cash back or 50%." As I walk out, Im like "Fix your F'ing ATM that you already make money off of and people wont have to bother you for cash back." He proceeds to yell "Im not fixing nothing!" As we're crossing the street, he comes out of the store to yell some more about how this is his store and who am I to tell him what to fix and blah blah blah. Dont waste your money here. Cashier/Owner or whoever is extremely rude, misleading, and will try to get over on you. He was rude from the min we walked in and asked about cash back. Screw this place! read more

I personally love this place, I'm pretty sure my household single-handedly keeps this place in business being that we come in 3-5 times a day. They are so incredibly convenient for people living around the corner, especially people like me who drink an endless amount of wine and beer, they have a TON of craft beer (local and import) and refrigerated/non-refrigerated wines...(arent people like me called something...?) egh, whatever. They have a ton of snacks, drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic), household items (razors, paper towels, etc), stamps, keys and an ATM! Tony is one of the nicest people I've ever met and he knows us all by name and encourages us to bring our dogs when we come since he gives them full sized milk bones (so nice!). Its hilarious because now when i take my pitbull puppy on walks around the block he pulls SO hard on the leash to go into Jaroco's for his treat. Cant beat this place! read more
