I had higher than normal expectations - my friend talked this place up and well, the menu prices of this place makes it a more "special occasion" kind of place, for me at least. I have no problems paying more than I normally do for a meal if you get what you pay for and this place does not disappoint one bit. From the outside it seems that this place would be on the smaller side as far as the dining room goes but that was not the case here. There was plenty of room in the back and they have things set up nicely with tables and use their space in such a way where all the seats are nice and you don't feel cramped when dining here. As far as the food goes, is it pricey? Sure, but you get what you pay for. I was very happy with just about everything I was able to try. I ordered the Cauliflower Soup and Monkfish Entree. Holy moly both were amazing. The soup was seasoned nice, not too hot, not too cold, and was a nice sized portion. The Monkfish entree was probably the best Monkfish meal I have ever had. If there was one small gripe - and I mean I am reaching here - is the portion was a little on the smaller side but this is not a showstopper for me by a long shot. Plus, considering all the other stuff my friends and I shared, I had plenty to eat overall. We ordered dessert to share, the Molé Spiced Financier Cake, Chai Spiced Coconut Pudding, and the Purple Sweet Potato Cheesecake. The Molé cake was my favorite. The coffee here is really nice too, I enjoyed it with dessert. Our server was helpful in telling us the blend they use and where we could get them from (The Beanwerks Coffee Shop down the street). Speaking of service, we all had a very good experience and the wait staff was very friendly and attentive. Our server was really great and she made our dining experience all the more better. We visited Jargon in West Asheville again, this time at one of its "Mardi Gras menu" nights. The restaurant is always interesting, the staff is great (especially Maria, our server), drinks are amazing and we had a very enjoyable evening in the downstairs heated patio. However, having lived in New Orleans for some years, I was disappointed in their approach to Creole cuisine. Take for example the rabbit and andouille gumbo. The roux was dark and delicious, yes, but for me the gumbo was ruined by mating it with a blob of "crab tater salad" instead of the usual rice and French bread, and the soggy pork rinds on top didn't help. And the crawfish etouffee! Where were the crawfish?!? We did like the fried oysters starter, with a corn meal breading. Of course the drinks were wonderful. The Vieux Carré ($16) was probably the best we've ever had, smooth and with sophisticated flavors, and the famous "Ice Breaker" is always fun. The jazz trio was very loud but good, especially the energetic keyboard player. I guess the four shared small plates/appetizers, two cocktails, one beer and a shared king cake dessert ($12, shipped from a commercial bakery in NOLA) was worth $160, but for New Orleans food I'd rather be at Galatoire's or Casamento's. read more

A friend and I ventured here while visiting Asheville on a girls trip. It looked fancy and like a special treat. We were seated at the chef's table so we got to see the action. However, I was surprised at the lack of service. Our waitress was kind of checked out and honestly the price for what we received was less than lack luster. The bread service was four small pieces of really dense bread with some butter for $8. The "schnitzel" was far from authentic. It was thick, highly breaded and the "potato salad" on top was cubed potatoes with tiny bits of relish sprinkled around and a few pieces of cut up Brussels. For $34. I don't understand the price for what I received. The only redeeming quality here was the ice breaker cocktail which was their version of an old fashioned captured inside of an ice cube that they break in front of you. If I ever return to Asheville, I won't be back unfortunately. read more

One of our best dining experiences ever. THIS is how to restaurant. Our server Sara was personable, professional and prompt - simply wonderful. It was our anniversary and the hostess and Sara greeted us accordingly. We started with a blue cheese plate and moved on to four small plates and then a decadent ganache. Food was amazing, timing of the plates was perfect, the atmosphere (we sat inside - there's also a very nice patio) was just right. Very nice wines by the glass were under $10. We were staying in West Asheville, but even if we weren't, this is so worth a short trip from downtown. read more

I've been meaning to come to Jargon for awhile now, and when I family got to go, on a date night with my wife, not only didn't disappoint, it beat my expectations. First off the ambience of Jargon is very cool with the art work, color schemes, and music playing on an actual record player (a Technique 1200 to be exact), next the staff is very friendly, and attentive, which always makes a date night a little more special. Our main course selection was the NY strip, and it was seasoned and prepared just the way I like it.The green beans and the mash potatoes were amazing. We ended our meal with a "cold fashion" and a "magic martini" and it was THE BEST after dinner drink I've had (I'm normally an Irish coffee kind of guy). During our evening several of Jargons staffed stopped to ask how we were doing, and if there was anything else we needed. Again, small details that make any date night even better. We had one of the BEST meals while in Asheville at Jargon last evening. Sean, the owner, was very present and obviously loves what he's doing. Our server David was efficient and knows his Jargon menu very well. The girls had inspected the craft cocktail list before heading to Jargon and knew that the Lost in the Supermarket (Chemist Navy Strength Gin, Pimm's, lemon, ginger syrup, basil, mint and cucumber soda) and the Eat a Peach (Tito's vodka, St. Germaine, peach & basil shrub, lemon & bubbles) were awaiting them! The craft cocktails did NOT disappoint! We enjoyed the smoked trout dip which was so GREAT with rye bread griddled along with pickles, carrots & turnip shavings. The other starter we ordered was a delightful combination of grilled local peaches, massaged kale (my daughter knows her kale and she knows they massaged it!), chorizo circles that had been deep fried to add a surprising and welcome crunch along with goat cheese panna cotta. What a fabulous salad for the four of us to share. One of our dining friends is Italian and on a search for the most delicious restaurant-served gnocchi and she believes this ricotta gnocchi at Jargon has hit the #1 spot as of last evening. It was light in its texture yet so flavorful with roasted mushrooms and a tempeh Bolognese. The mole braised chicken thigh was totally loved by our daughter and its presentation was fabulous with a lovely pickled tomatillo, charred scallion, and poached egg. My husband and I both wanted to enjoy the North Carolina Sunburst Trout so we each ordered it and are happy we did so with the smoked buttermilk nage and other accompanying accoutrements. A great evening with a lovely hostess at the door that graciously invited us to join them early when we arrived into town on a Sunday thinking we would shop a little before dinner but the shops were closed. Jargon is my absolute favorite restaurant in Asheville. The menu is always fresh and innovative, offering seasonal produce and incredible flavors - I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu! It is on the pricier side, but I think the quality of food and the ambiance of the restaurant makes it well worth it. I've been to my fair share of fine dining restaurants, and expect small plates and odd ingredients that I don't normally see but my trout dish ($34) was completely plain with no flavor and contained a whopping three forkful of rice. The bread to start our meal tasted like homemade kings Hawaiian rolls for two dollars apiece, not worth it. And finally, I know that Spruce Tip ice cream is supposed to be all the rage, but it was not good and almost inedible. Will not bother going back. read more

Came here after a foraging tour, because this restaurant allows you to bring what you've foraged and cooks it in an appetizer for you! The appetizer was carrot soup (vegan!) -- it was devine! My only wish was that they included all of what we brought or gave us back the rest. We brought a ton of scallions, at least 20 dandelions and 3 other plants. All I saw in my soup was half of a dandelion and a few scallions. Where did the rest go? I also had a small plate of pickled beets (vegan) with a house made cashew cheese spread. Wonderful. And a Mediterranean chickpea dish (vegan) -- so flavorful. I was stuffed. Service was good as well. I would have given 5 stars if they returned our foraged goods to us after our meal and if their menu online matched the one in house (I understand the menu changes often -- I just like to know what my options are ahead of time). read more

We booked a last minute reservation at the Chef's Counter which resulted in one of the BEST meals we've ever had. The atmosphere is eclectic, BoHo and very welcoming. They were very clever with repurposing some items for the bar and tables which are made of old bowling alley lanes. The staff was incredible, friendly, fun and extremely helpful in food and drink selections. We started off with the Pig Ear and Pork and Duck Terrine appetizers. The Pig Ears were perfectly crunchy with a buffalo chimichuri, paired with a subtle bleu cheese dressing and slaw on top. The pork and duck was absolutely perfectly paired with grilled bread, a green strawberry mustard and pickled ramps. The flavors were absolutely exquisite. The Chef was kind enough to send us a tasting of the appetizer special which was a Chickpea fried Shrimp with a sweet curry sauce...phenomenal!! For our entrees we decided on a rare Ribeye and Porcini roasted Cobia. Both entrees were phenomenal...cooked perfectly, fabulous flavor and textures. We decided on the Choco Taco and Coffee Service which was an fabulous way to end our evening. The Choco Taco had a Banana Tamarind ice cream inside which was to die for. Our experience at Jargon from beginning to end was top notch. Don't hesitate to give this gem of a restaurant a visit. This place is oddly Asian just like many other restaurants in Asheville. For example, the menu lists "beet dashi" soup that comes out in a sake carafe that every server struggled to pour because it was too hot. We celebrated our anniversary dinner at Jargon; it was such a delightful experience! When we first arrived, they handed us a complimentary glass of cava....THANK YOU! Such a lovely way to start our evening! We had the Triple Cream Brie with onion jam as our appetizer, and each ordered an entree- I had the Sunburst Trout, and my husband had the Braised Short Rib. The app and the short ribs were divine.....but I'll be honest, the trout was a touch fishy for me. But that may have just been my problem, it's seafood after all! All in all, the ambiance was incredible; music was played via vinyl record player and it totally has a romantic vibe. I would suggest this place if you are looking for upscale dining; definitely peek at the menu before making a reservation as this is an elevated, foodie-type experience. And to our waitress who touched my heart saying: "have a wonderful rest of your lives together" as we left our table.....loveeeee! read more

While in Asheville we wanted to eat at a place that wasn't a chain restaurant and decided the reviews for this place warranted a trip for dinner to see what all the fuss was about. All we can say is WOW WOW WOW. From the moment we walked in we were transported to a different time. Our hostess walked us to the hidden outside seating area which was lit up by table fire pits and heated lamps. Our waitress was Reign and she helped us with our selections. She was very knowledgeable, helpful, funny and very attentive to our needs; Answered all of our questions. We had 2 appetizers and main course meals and a dessert.( see pictures; but the pictures do this food no justice). The Owner Mr Piper and the Chef Mr Goff also came out to our table and spoke with us ( never see this anymore) . This experience was so far above what we expected it really deserves a 10 star. After a long drive from Durham, we were absolutely ready for dinner. Jargon was close to where we were staying and had openings for reservations. We were seated immediately upon entering, which was nice since it was raining outside. We got a patio table with some great hanging lights and heat lamps for comfort. Hostess greeted us promptly and got our drink orders promptly! I always appreciate a bar tender who's willing to tweak a beverage up for me if i ask. They accommodated me by adding some dark rum to this pear/apple beverage they already had on the menu. We had several starters/shareable including the fingerling potatoes, gumbo, and meatballs. I had a jook (grits) pulled pork dish that was very delicious! Having been away from NC for some time, i was craving a good bowl of grits. My friend had the ricotta gnocchi which she didnt think was bad but was just not her taste - perhaps it was the ricotta. another friend had the chowder which she devoured. Overall we were quite stuffed and the service was perfect! Not sure if it was the dishes we chose but a majority of them that night had dill in them. It did kind of make our meal fall on one note but the flavors were still very good. I'll definitely be back to try more! read more

What an amazing eating experience! From the LPs playing jazz to the dim lighting, it was fantastic from the get go! We sat at the bar, where Jen was an amazing bartender and extremely attentive. Ordered multiple 'courses' and enjoyed as the chef sent them out when ready. We can't wait to return during our next Asheville visit. Don't miss out on this gem! We had such an amazing dinner here. The setting is beautiful - they've created an amazing outdoor patio that's covered with openings to allow for air flow, and space heaters a-plenty. And, amazingly, dog friendly! All were excellent and beautifully plated: - ham hushpuppies - potato leek soup - crispy brussels sprouts (FAV - do not miss) - watusi meatballs - roasted broccoli risotto (really unique, loved this) The "Ice Breaker 2.0" cocktail comes enclosed in an ice sphere and, theatrics aside, was delicious. One of the drinks is called "Punch Me In the Face," and while we didn't try this one, I really enjoyed hearing other diners order it. Got lucky to call and get a last minute spot open out on the patio for 5:30 on a Wednesday night. Service was fantastic - from the folks on the phone, at the front, and all the staff. The ambiance inside was lovely, but I still prefer to eat outside. Jarrod, my server, had the chef take my food allergies into consideration when picking menu items. The NC trout was phenomenal - best preparation I've ever had...and I'm a big fish eater. It had a light sauce with warm grapes that was absolutely delicious. Great service and atmosphere, and pretty good food too. Walked in without reservation around 7:45 pm on a Saturday. Waited about 10 minutes while they made room for us at the bar. Very quick service. Especially good were the smashed potatoes and trout and chocolate taco. Nice wines available by the glass due to this fancy system that pulls one glass out of the bottle at a time. The Patience Young Grasshopper was maybe the best dessert drink I've ever had. read more

We had no reservations and the place is kind of small but we lucked out that they had a table for us. Our friendly waiter came right over to take our drink order. He was very efficient. The small menu had some unusual choices and combinations of food. One choice, Local Trout With Fennel, my husband decided to try. He did not like the taste of the combination. The trout however was cooked to perfection. I ordered the Eggplant Pasta Fresca dish. I wasn't that hungry so the small portion was enough for me. I liked the unusual texture of the eggplant served in a delicious sauce. I think that bread or salad should have been offered with the meal. It must be an a la carte kind of a place. It's official. After 7 weeks and lots of amazing restaurants, I've officially found my favorite restaurant in Asheville. When you walk in the door, the atmosphere is warm and inviting. The intimate dining room with view of the kitchen is the perfect place to enjoy a nice evening meal with family or friends. The waiter had a good sense of humor and was knowledgeable about the menu. The owner is also very present in the dinging room walking around speaking to guests, clearing tables, and running food. He is very friendly and you can tell he's very passionate about his restaurant. The menu is created using locally sourced, seasonal ingredients so it changes regularly. It also seems like the chefs put their own creative spin on dishes based on what ingredients are available, which makes each menu even more unique. We began our meal with the smoked trout dip and a tomato tartine. We absolutely loved the tomato tartine. The tomatoes were some of the freshest I've ever had and the aioli on the bread was phenomenal. As entrees we had the braised short rib and one of the specials, which was a mackerel. What was interesting about the mackerel was that it was caught by the owner himself and the chef made a dish around it. It was absolutely delicious! The short rib was also cooked perfectly and the greens, mushrooms, and goat cheese polenta were amazing with it. To round out the meal we got two desserts - both of which were equally amazing. We came here for my birthday as a spur of the moment thing. The stars aligned for us because we got the last reservation in a perfect spot (corner booth vs a table in the middle of the room)! We ordered lots of little plates and they brought the plates out in twos. Everything was absolutely DELECTABLE. The drinks were great as well!! The only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars was because the server (although efficient) wasn't very friendly. Our server didn't chat with us, or make eye contact. I would even say was a bit terse. This was the first time my husband and I have been on a date in over a year because we're new parents. So it would've been nice to have had a friendly face to go with our wonderful (and expensive) meal. read more
