This is quite simply the best garden I have ever visited. As a trained horticulturalist and a…read morelifetime gardener I have been to dozens of gardens across the UK and Great Dixter stands head and shoulders above 95% of them. One or two are very good but this place is awesome! the setting of course, adds superb theatre to the place but the sheer vibrant, luxuriant, generous content of the place is something to behold. We visited in July and the whole garden was billowing out to greet us in wave after wave of colour, scent and form. Many of the smaller garden areas would make fabulous small urban gardens as they stand but linked together the whole place is magical. I cannot reccomend it enough. If it wasn't for the fact that I booked a tour to go and visit some of the sites from the Battle of…read morethe Somme I would have never known about this place. The thing with this park is that it is actually managed by the Canadian Government, and Canadian students come here on a four month rotation during the warmer months to provide guides and information about the park. The park is actually the remains of trenches from one of the initial fights in the battle of the Somme, and is significantly to the Canadians due to the significant loss of life that was experienced here. Don't expect to see any fully preserved trenches - the ravages of war, and the elements over the last hundred years has simply made them depressions (some of them quite deep) in the ground. However you can still see the remains of some bomb craters, and they even have a path that leads through one of the trenches. In the middle of the park is a memorial to the Newfoundlanders who lost their lives in the battle, and there are a couple of other cemeteries, and a memorial to the Scottish troops who also fought here. Definitely a must see if you are on a World War tour of Europe.
