In 1915, the Scituate Reservoir was created for water supply for the people of Rhode Island. Parts of the town (38%) were demolished and burned for this to happen; many people had to move. There are about 10,000 residents currently. When driving around, the area is rural but close to everything. School system is also great. The neighborhood is safe and desirable. Every October, they host the Scituate Art Festival; tons of vendors and a popular tradition for the locals. There are some small shops, cafes, and stores in town, but not much. You would have to go to neighboring towns for leisure and shopping. There are farms and parks; just a rural small town. However, a great place to raise a family.

Luckily, taking an 'avoid highways' trip we passed the sign in Foster pointing the way to this bridge and since then we have found out there are several, easily accessible, covered bridges in state. Although none of them are the original structures, they are still works of craftmanship and remind of times past. This bridge is just out of sight of the main road. At the time of our visit the roads had been stripped down to dirt and there seemed to be some excavating work going on. Not sure how long it's been like that or how long it will last, but it did not look like a 'new' occurrance. It spans a small creek, at when we visited in the summer it was surrounded by lush greenery making any path to the water impassable. There is a home right next to the bridge and aside from lurkers like us, looks like an idyllic spot for a home. Just before the bridge there is a spot to pull off the road while you take your photos and get a closer look. The road is in use as we had a couple of vehicles pass us while we were exploring the bridge. We did not have enough to turn around an followed the GPS back to the main road we had just come off, further up the route. If you enjoy exploring covered bridges, this is a quick stop along your route and a lovely photo op.

Most of the trees surrounding the bridge no longer had any leaves. However, the drive to the covered bridge was perfect! There were a ton of beautiful trees near the water, Barden Reservoir. Although I was a bit disappointed when I got to the bridge due to lack of fall foliage, the drive more than made up for it--very peaceful with great views.

This is the second time I've visited the memorial: I stopped by here briefly in 2021 as well. I personally had no connections to the victims of the tragedy, as I was a high school senior in Pennsylvania in February 2003 - and I also didn't hear about the fire until after it occurred. Nonetheless, I've always been fascinated at the terrible event which took place on that fatal night in 2003, and wanted to visit the aftermath myself. The park is very simple in its appearance: upon entering the threshold, you're given multiple paths to walk upon, which have markers on the ground to commemorate the victims of the fire. In the center of each module of markers are circular concrete tables embossed with designs of 45 record spindle inserts. At the back of the memorial is a small pavilion with a full timeline of the tragedy, as well as key facts about similar nightclub tragedies such as Cocoanut Grove in Massachusetts. During my visit, I spoke with a man who informed me that he was an emergency room worker on the night of the disaster, and that his hospital was overwhelmed with injured patients to the surprise of the other hospital workers. Even if you have no immediate friends or family involved with the disaster, I recommend you stop by and pay respects. The park is usually quiet during the day, and is located off a main road which is relatively near Interstate 95.

This light is on a timer, so if it goes off, you will need to walk through the entrance again to turn it back on. People around the world know of the Station Night Club Fire. It's lessons are taught in fire districts throughout the U.S. For years family members have been working to create a memorial to those who lost their lives. Finally the park is completed and I believe it is a fitting tribute. There were many considerations that had to be taken into account when creating this park, not the least of which is the requirements by the state that the park be easily maintained. This park truly gives the aura of a holy place. A place of remembrance. It memorializes each person who lost their lives while out for an evening of enjoyment with friends. Every person has a head stone. Most with a photo, making the loss, of all their futures held, poignant. The pavilion at the back includes a time line. Reading top to bottom, left to right, it describes the history of the building - for example how originally the capacity of the building was about 50 people, and over time how that changed. The events of the fire are recounted starting before the band began to play. It recounts how some people made it out safely, couldn't find their friends, and returned to help them out, never to make it out again. So much heroism. Such sadness. I hope you will visit this memorial. Pay your respects to the departed. Appreciate how one moment can change your life and remember to be thankful for every small thing. No matter how small.

I've walked past the Fox Point Veterans Memorial more times than I could possibly count,…read moreparticularly during the years I lived in Providence. It's easy to pass by without giving it much thought because it isn't a huge monument or some grand attraction that demands your attention. It's a relatively modest memorial sitting near the Point Street Bridge, but once you actually stop and look at it, there's quite a bit there. The memorial was created by Aristide Berto Cianfarani, an Italian-born sculptor who studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, and it was dedicated in 1951. It was commissioned and paid for by the people of Providence as a memorial to local residents who served during World War II. The granite monument has bronze reliefs on both sides. One depicts male service members in combat dress, while the opposite side depicts women serving in the military. There are also olive branches representing peace and a bronze eagle on top. What I find particularly interesting is that the memorial has had something of a second life. It wasn't always situated where it is today. Its original location was farther up near Wickenden Street, where it was difficult for pedestrians to really see or appreciate. Eventually it was moved to its current location near the Point Street Bridge, where it became much more accessible to people walking along the waterfront. There's also something very Providence about the memorial itself. It was created for the people of the city, commemorating men and women from the community who went off to serve during World War II. Providence was, and remains, a city built around neighborhoods. Fox Point has changed dramatically over the decades, but having something like this tucked into the landscape provides a physical connection to an earlier Providence and to the people who lived here before the city became what it is today. I've always liked stumbling across things like this when walking around Providence. You don't necessarily need to make a special trip just to see it. If you're already in Fox Point, walking along the river, or crossing the Point Street Bridge, take a minute and stop. Look at the bronze work, look at the details, and think about why someone bothered to build it in the first place. Five stars from me. Not because a memorial is an attraction in the conventional sense, but because it is an accessible piece of Providence history that deserves to be noticed. I've passed it countless times, and I suspect I'll continue doing exactly that for years to come. Sometimes the places that become familiar parts of a city are the ones worth slowing down for every once in a while.
