When my husband spoke to a firefighter named Shawn, and was showing him video of what was occurring, he noticed the fire pit that usually has flames going quite high, as they also utilize a barrel sometimes with 2x4s to have more heat. That's usually done between July 4-September. Shawn had conveyed to him that he would speak with the chief and have the chief give us a call. That never happened. He also seemingly gave my husband the wrong information in regards to fire pits being illegal in the town, when quite frankly they are legal. So he stated that anytime they had a pit fire going to call them, they would put it out. They did no such thing, they allow it, and we were retaliated against for that on 6/18. One would think their own firefighters would know the laws, but that's seemingly again not the case. The police say they have to catch the fireworks like these bottle rockets found on our deck, gutters, and near our cars, and evidently fires in pits and the big barrels they pull out later in the summer are fine according to the fire department. I guess they have to wait until there is an actual fire from the sparks of both the barrel they pull out and the pit before they care and take it seriously.

You see, this volunteer fire department will often sell Portuguese sweet bread for fund raising purposes. $6 a loaf, at their roadside stand. Why Portuguese sweet bread you ask? It's basically a nod towards the local Portuguese fishermen and community which has been an integral part of Stonington for many years. The bread is very good, by the way.

Here is how this all went down: It's the day before Thanksgiving. Kelly G. is packing up the car so that we can take off to my family's house in Maine. Outside, next door at the Y-Not convenience a police woman is getting her paper. She walks outside, smells the burning plastic smell, looks around and sees smoke coming out of our chimney, then calls 911. The chimney was busted and the smoke was drafting out of it instead of into the house so Kelly G and my best friend have no idea what is going on. The fire department comes running up the stairs as Kelly is taking stuff down to the car and is like, "Where's the fire?!?!" To which Kelly replies, "I don't know, where IS the fire?" They wind up chopping a big hole in the roof to get to the fire and hose the thing down. Meanwhile I get back to my desk from lunch and give her a call to let her know I'll be getting out at 3:00 and she tells me the roof is on fire. I repeat her, and my coworker starts singing the roof is on fire song as I dash out the door to get home. When I get to our house, the street is blocked off, there are 3 fire trucks around the house, and I'm directed to the Fire Chief. He lets me know that the house is not livable and we'll have to get all our valuables out that day. This is the reason they get 5 stars: He asks if I have the land lord's number and tells me I need to call him. I'm like, "Really? There is a hole in our roof, our stuff all buried in rubble, I'm homeless, and I'm the one who has to call my land lord and tell him the house burned down?... Can you do it?" The fire chief let me know that it wasn't exactly standard procedure, but that he'd be willing to make an exception. He called and explained everything to my landlord who lives in Florida. That was above and beyond the call of duty. Bravo Somerville FD.

With roots going back to 1678, the Boston Fire Department has seen a lot. The museum is staffed with mostly retired Jakeys who still have a passion for the job. In the museum you will find an old an old pumper dating back over 100 years, along with a Rehab unit that still Is in use at greater alarms to aid exhausted firefighters with Gatorade, snacks, and other items to aid in decon and rehydration. I had the pleasure of speaking with a retired fireman retired almost 11 years. He v CT one's back to help run the small store selling t-shirts, caps, patches, and other memorabilia. You will hear live dispatches and radio traffic over the speaker. Boston is such a clean city who still maintain street pull boxes civilians can use to call for help. Car accidents. Medical emergencies. Even fires! Boston FD will respond quickly and professionally.
