We recently had a party of 7 before a Sunday evening play.. everything was excellent. Food& Service was great

James Place is an adventure in it's own. Settled on campus and located across from La Jolla Playhouse, this small little restaurant booms for playhouse patrons. We weren't patrons of the show, so we had the fun pleasure of trying to navigate the restaurant. First... there's ZERO parking. You need to park at the parking garage and take a shuttle to the playhouse and restaurant. This was super inconvenient for us but whatever. It's part of the experience. We were shuttled to our drop off location and nearly missed our reservation. When we got in, the place was packed. We were seated outside and met our server. She asked us if we were there for the play and we said no. She seemed surprised and said they rarely get tables for the food alone. We ordered the truffle fries and a sushi roll to start. The food came out ridiculously fast for how busy they were. The roll was amazing and the fries were hot and covered with yummy truffle Parmesan. It was delicious. Our entrees came out and they were very light - assuming it's because heavy meals may make it harder to focus on the play. Everything was delicious. As the clock struck 7, it seemed as if the entire restaurant cleared out. We were the only ones dining in and the service felt much more focused and intimate. Our server, Amanda, was the most attentive and fun server we've had in such a long time. She made sure we were enjoying ourselves as the lone patrons and gave us the most delicious lava cake dessert - which I rightfully inhaled. She made it such a pleasurable experience that we'd have no problem enduring the shuttle again. It's unfortunate the shuttle services are so inconsistent. We had to find a driver to take us back - as we weren't staying for the play. Hopefully in the near future the shuttle service is more considering of patrons. read more

We are regular theatre goers at the La Jolla Playhouse next to James Place and often reserve to have a pre-theatre meal there. Service is always friendly and accommodating, and the food is very good. Sometimes things are a bit slow from the kitchen but that's the exception. Entree portions can easily be split. Ambiance is subdued and relaxing, and there is a lively but not overcrowded bar as well read more

It's fine, but the service is forgetful. I got a reservation online but showed up 15 minutes early. I was seated right away. I had the Miso Soup, which I returned because it was over-salted. The Spicy Tuna on crispy rice was really good. I know it's an appetizer, but the portion size is perfect for one person. The truffle fries didn't have much truffle oil. We were really disappointed with James. We have had decent meals in years past. The prices are through the roof! $35 for a hamburger!~- NOT I guess they feel they can jack up prices because they are the only restaurant at the La Jolla Playhouse. My halibut was OK, but my wife's Chilean Sea Bass was horrible. I would compare it to an overcooked Mrs. Paul's fish stick. Service was good but that's about it. read more

It was a tale of two plates. My wife ordered the shrimp tempura and thought it was the best she had ever had. The short ribs that I ordered were way too chewy and would have been inedible without a pleasant sauce. The garlic mashed potatoes had a nice texture but they skimped on the garlic. We tried to make up for it by ordering bread pudding. While it satisfied my sweet tooth it was more than 50% ice cream. Service was average and I really did not see any value. Stopped by for drinks and dinner before seeing the Hasan Minhaj show at La Jolla Playhouse a couple weekends ago. Our server was great -- super friendly and took good care of us. My wife and I ordered a couple rounds of margaritas sin sal -- excellent. Ordered some really good soy garlic edamame to start, then we went off the plant-based bandwagon for a change of pace. My wife ordered the salmon carpaccio and I ordered the sea bass misoyaki. The salmon was excellent and so was the sea bass. The only negative was the bland, slightly sweet sauce poured on top of the sea bass -- I prefer the excellent version at Eddie V's which doesn't have sauce poured on top. Also, the accompanying "fried rice" was very plain -- seemed like it was just rice soaked with soy sauce. Anyway, overall we were very happy with our visit and will definitely return soon for more of those margaritas! read more

Three stars if you're coming to the Playhouse or UCSD anyway. I would not come here if I was not going to be on campus, though - two stars in that case. Why three stars and not two? Definitely convenient if you're going to the Playhouse. Some of the dishes were very good. Overall, our dishes ranged between 1 and 4 stars. Best things: excellent salted edamame. Rice that came with the sea bass misoyaki was excellent. In the middle: sea bass misoyaki was pretty good, big portion. The Garden cocktail is not something I'll dream about, but it was refreshing on a hot night. Not good at all: green salad, totally flavorless and unseasoned dressing. Some cherry tomatoes were fresh and delicious; others had turned and should never have made the plate. Green beans on both of our entrees (sweetie got beef) were totally bland and soft and not worth eating. Service was disorganized - it took them more than 10 minutes and our asking to figure out who was going to serve us. Once Valerie was assigned, she was very nice and is one of the main reasons I'm giving three stars and not two. She was very sweet and very apologetic about our having waited, and she got our orders just right. Certainly, this is downhill from past visits - but it was better (with the good dishes) than I might have hoped for seeing recent Yelp reviews. Yelpers have trashed it lately; OpenTab lers have still been giving high marks (though suspicious ones). So this was better than it might have been, but the low reviews still made sense. I am glad we came, as it was a good change of pace pre-theater than going to my other fave places in the area, but I probably won't go again. (My tastebuds were saved, though, from the delicious peanut butter chocolate chip cookie I ate after at the LJ Playhouse concession stand - now THAT was something worth dreaming of!) read more

Food was good, drinks were good, service and ambiance all good but a couple of days later when I checked my bank records, I discovered they had charged an additional $18.00 to my debit card after I left. I tried to email the manager, but the email was returned. They don't answer the phone either but instead refer you to Open Table. I'm watching my debit account to make sure they don't charge any more to it. I would give a better review if there was a way to contact someone. read more

A fusion Asian menu, loved the CRISPY RICE appetizer, which is a beautifully presented warmish bed of crispy rice "cake" topped a dollop of spicy tuna and a deep-fried jalepeno balanced on its edge -- an edible sculpture!! Beautiful AND tasty. I made my reservation for a party of two via OPEN TABLE for 6:30 PM, but we arrived one hour too early. But we were happily seated, and our previous reservation cancelled or changed, not sure which action was taken, only that we were seated without hesitation. Although I did ask for window seat, and was told they had all been reserved already. So next time, if you do want a window seat, reserve it. Since I clearly wanted the view to the trees, it might have been cleverer to clear the menus and two place settings opposite of the view. But no matter, I just rearranged the the place settings myself. Love the swivel chairs. This place has lots of windows to the outside, so brings the trees and Gregory Peck Park into an enjoyable view before sunset...there's also al fresco dining, but not on this chilly evening with threats of rain. There's a very pretty bar lit up in green, and a small tv screen that was playing a Diana documentary. PLUS it's next door to La Jolla Playhouse, so makes for a very convenient place to dine before the show. AND the wait staff know how to time things, so you are in your seat without a rush by curtain time. In fact, our waiter Sydney was lovely and helped to make our mother/daughter nite out a very special evening, just by being so welcoming and friendly. And later on, I loved that she asked me if I wanted a to-go cup for my coffee. I didn't, but awesome she offered. AND there was another waiter with a short dark beard, who needs a shoutout, because he kept a watchful eye from afar, and my water glass was filled multiple times. Very efficient friendly wait staff, impressive! We ordered the FLAT IRON STEAK Teppanyaki; mom asked for medium and the steak was a perfect medium. My BUNLESS WAYGU BURGER, also cooked to order. Bravo, chef. The GARLIC FRIED RICE that came on the side for the steak was fluffy, the garlic was mild -- very delicious. The steak came sizzling and steaming on a platter to our table - think fajitas. Very dramatic! And the waygu was topped with perfectly al dente asparagus stocks, and hiding on the bottom was a small square of a portobello mushroom cap. Both entrees were artfully presented. And a little playful. Wanted to try the PINEAPPLE UPSIDE DOWN CAKE, but alas they were out of it by 7:15 pm. Bummer. Another time! OVERALL: A leisurely dinner in enjoyable surroundings. Only wished we had some light or a candle at our table, most of the perimeter tables along the window had a light tower, but the center tables didn't. I also enjoyed the triptych paintings on the far wall of Princess Diana. Since we were there in La Jolla to see the new musical DIANA, it was a thoughtful tasteful display of art. read more

We went to James' Place because of the convenient location opposite to the La Jolla Playhouse. Unfortunately, that's the only positive thing I have to say about the restaurant. Our server was Ok but overall service lacked attentiveness. One of our drinks took almost 10 minutes even though the bar was not busy at all. When the server attendant / busser brought our dessert we still had ketchup and soy sauce sitting next to the dessert. We also had to ask for plates and silverware which were basically thrown on the table. Overall the food was mediocre. The Rainbow Sushi roll had no taste and was disappointing. The overall food presentation reminded me of Hotel Banquet food and was not at all visually attractive. Everything was basically just plopped on a plate without any regards for presentation. The vegetables (carrots / broccoli) were cold and we asked to get them replaced. The next batch was served steaming hot courtesy of the microwave... The Truffle & Parmesan Fries lacked truffle taste and you could hardly make out any Parmesan on them either. When we paid our bill the server did not ask if we enjoyed our dining "experience" so I asked if there was a manager available we could talk to. The server said they didn't have a manager working that night so we gave her some feedback about this poor dining experience and she just told us to go online and leave some comments... Small ambient observation - it wouldn't hurt to replace burned out light bulbs in the very cool chandeliers and when you replace them make sure they all have the same color temperature. read more

The food is NOT good. It is terribly overpriced too. The restaurant was full, but at times I couldn't see a single employee on the floor except for the bartender. Ordering a glass of wine with your dinner and having it arrive well after the entree is unacceptable. I waited and waited and waited to catch a glimpse of an employee so we could have our water refilled and request chopsticks. I ordered the $41 Halibut. The fish had NO seasoning and the it was practically bone dry. I tried to find the sauce that came with it so the fish would at least be palatable, but the overflow of noodles on the dish had soaked it all up. I didn't care by this point as the sauce was flavorless. It's certainly convenient if you are going to see a show at the Playhouse, but beware. High pricing of bad food and mediocre service makes this place worthless. read more

Officially done with this place. It's great to have a restaurant next to the theater though it's limited to seafood for the most part. But they are always understaffed and therefore the service is awful. The good news is you can get a cocktail and bring it into the theater, the bad news is they are not great at making cocktails. Once I was served an aperol spritz in a champagne glass, no ice. The female bartender was not practicing any hygiene with straws, ice, etc. A man yelled at her which was awful and I tried to console her with a big HOWEVER about things I saw her do. Tonight I asked for champagne and was served Prosecco (split) when the menu clearly advertised champagne. The bartender just said it's all he had with no acknowledgement these are not the same thing. This is a solid 3 star choice to dine if going to a show at the Playhouse. My wife and I had a simple dinner here, and everything was fine. I had the "lollipop" sushi roll (not sure why it was called this), which consisted of assorted fish wrapped in rice paper roll. I requested a substitution of the seaweed instead of the rice paper and they gladly accommodated. My 2nd course was the appetizer of Black Cod in miso sauce. I generally love this dish, yet this preparation was a weak execution... I would not order this again. My wife's chicken salad was a reasonable and tasty dish. Service was good. Nice atmosphere. Good to dine if going to a show....not a destination restaurant. read more

I was very disappointed with the food we were served. I ordered seared ahi and the presentation and flavor were terrible. It was covered with an ugly gravy that covered the taste of the Ahi. It was accompanied by a salad that was clearly out of a bag. My husband ordered salmon and it had no taste. They covered it with a pineapple sauce but it did not cover the over cooked flavor. We paid a lot for our meal and could not even eat it. We were extremely disappointed and will never go there again. read more

Wow where do I begin. My partner and I made a 6:15 reservation for her birthday and before a play. Food was good, service was horrible. We were never offered a second drink. Dessert took 30 minutes. We weren't offered any coffee or drinks with dessert. Worst restaurant experience I've had since moving here. I'm embarrassed that I took my girlfriend here for her birthday. read more

Service and ambiance were fine...however the Caesar salad with salmon for $30 was way overpriced for the quality. I did not finish and would not recommend this dish or ever order it again. I was so excited when this place opened....better yet, when UCSD partnered with James' Place so Tritoncash can be used here! I reserved online party of 4, 6 pm on a Saturday night for my mom's birthday. What we ordered: 1) appetizer: Kobe beef sliders ($9 for two) 2) appetizer: mini ahi poke tacos ($9 for three) 3) speciality rolls: Don Juan roll ($13) 4) specialty rolls: Orange dragon roll ($13) 5) sandwiches/chips: soft shell crab sandwich ($15) 6) salad/soup: spicy seafood salad ($13) 7) ramen/noodles: Tonkotsu ramen ($8) 8) entree: spanish seafood paella ($28) 9) entree: braised short ribs ($29) 10) dessert: chocolate lava cake ($7) It was pretty packed when we came around 6 pm, since the show was about to start right at La Jolla Playhouse. It took a while for the server to help us, but food came out quickly. Service: -our waiter's service was not very good (not noticing we needed refills on water, left and sometimes never came back to help us unless we had a dish...) but Rachel is very nice and constantly came to check up on us. -he also didn't ask us if we wanted dessert. Though they knew it was someone's birthday and the birthday girl gets a free one, but shouldn't they still ask everyone out of courtesy? Pros: -mini ahi poke tacos are amazing. Tasted like something I could slow cook myself, and was way too salty. Presentation was also not very delightful. Tips/observations: -happy hour deals are good but we unfortunately couldn't get it unless we sat at the bar. So sit at the bar next time! -since they recently opened, they don't have "soup of the day" yet....so only miso soup. -there is no set dessert menu, but there is green tea creme brûlée here! Good happy hour or dinner to come to before/after a play! *Pictures of happy hour menu, sushi menu, and alcohol menu* *Will accept triton cash but not dining dollars* I came here for happy hour with a few coworkers and was pleasantly surprised! They have few people from 4-6 and have a pretty good happy hour menu for food and some drinks. Shishito Peppers appetizer ($9 regular) : AMAZING. I've never had them before and I loved them. They're shishito peppers sauteed in mizo Ponzu sauce, with a spicy sauce that you can ask for on the side. The flavor was delicious and the spicy sauce wasnt too spicy. Can be a little salty but goes well with drinks. Lemon Roll ($12 happy hour) : The lemon roll had a very refreshing taste of fresh lemon which tied together the whole roll. Topped with salmon and yellowtail, this light roll and offers a great contrast to some of the heavier tasting rolls while still tasting great by itself. Don Juan Roll ($12 happy hour) : A roll topped with albacore tuna and individual slices of crunchy jalapeño, delicious and a little bit spicy. Everything in this roll tasted good together but my favorite part was the jalapeño just cuz it added a bit of kick to the sushi. 808 Roll ($12 happy hour) : Basically a snow crab roll with avocado topped with spicy tuna. My first impression of this roll was the taste of the snow crab. I think it's not imitation snow crab which is why it tasted better. Personally, I liked the other two more just because they each had a special taste. I've also tried their spicy tuna roll and their mini ahi poke tacos on a different occassion. I thought the roll was pretty good, a bit better than a standard spicy tuna, but nothing to really brag about, especially since their other rolls are more intricate. And my friend didn't care much for the ahi poke tacos. Alcohol wise, they have about ~12 cocktail options in their menu (picture of the alcohol menu will be posted on yelp). My friend also recommends the sake and wine, both of which she enjoyed. Overall, I would come back to this place again and would recommend it too.The service was fast, friendly, and professional. The place is conveniently next to la Jolla playhouse and has a bit of an elegant feel to it and they also have a patio so you can bring your dogs! Their actual bar/sushi bar changes color every once in a while and is really nice. You also get free Edamame if you sit at the sushi bar. My only complaint was that the food can be a little pricey, but I'd rather pay a little extra for good quality and delicious fish than save a few bucks to get food poisoning. read more

This is the place to go if you are seeing a show at the nearby theatre, more specifically, the LaJolla Playhouse. It's also the only game in town so you have no choice. Located on the campus of the University of San Diego, James Place is listed as an Asian Fusion sushi house. The peak dining times are two hours before curtain. The goal here is to shuffle them in, and get them out in time to see a show. James does a pretty decent job of accomplishing with some efficient service included so kudos to them for that. While the food is not the best I've had, it certainly isn't bad. Edamame is as expected but the Shinto Peppers had a nice flavor and some noticeable 'heat'. The Chilean Sea Bass was tasty and cooked well. The Beef Tenderloin Filet with a Shiitake Cream Demi Glaze wasn't a prime cut, but the medium rare cook was excellent. The glaze was too sweet for me but I always ask for sauces on the side so it wasn't a bother. What was lacking for us was the sushi. It's flavor, presentation and cut reminded me of college dorm sushi; not exceptional. The Salmon Roll, Lemon Roll and the California Roll were all a bit underwhelming. Maybe it was a bad night but I don't think the sushi is something I would order again. James Place tries hard to look like a classy place. To me it looks more like a glorified multipurpose room/professor's dining hall than a proper dining room. The tables and chairs seem portable and the folding room partitions give the vibe that university maintenance can remove everything and repurpose the room in a couple of hours. So be it, that's just my opinion. Regardless, as the only game in town, James Place could be much worse. The service was good and chances are, you will find something enjoyable on the (multi-optional) menu. A-Ok for James Place. read more

Overall I was impressed! Even though James Place is on UCSD's campus, you'll find a very different vibe compared to the Price Center. (The crowds that came in were clearly much older than your average college student.) Anyway, I ordered off the happy hour menu the stuffed shiitake mushrooms and Asian wings. At $7 the mushrooms weren't a very good value. (Please see the picture.) Yes, they were stuffed with crab and other fillers, but four little pieces come out to $1.75 each! They were tasty, but completely overpriced for happy hour. In comparison the Asian wings were a much better value. I would definitely get these again. Too often find I find that most wings are too saucy without having any texture. These had an excellent crunch with an amazing sweet sauce. All in all, James Place is a really nice place! Back again. This time we had the ahi tacos, which they forgot to put an ahi in! They did take them off our bill as well as our drinks which was very customer friendly. They also made another order later in the evening but we had just ordered another large roll and thanked them but turned it down, the lucky boys seated next to us, got the yummy tacos with ahi! They were really good and would have been better with more than greens and avocado. WE tried the Salmon Fiesta roll which was so good. Topped with salmon. We ordered the lemon roll again which is toped with salmon and hamachi and lemon slices and is one of the best cleaner rolls to try. There is avo, cucumber and I believe crab inside. The list of specialty HH rolls are great and only $8. On SDSU campus by the Theatre, great space and friendly staff. Will of course be back for more soon! read more

We visited James Place a couple of years ago, and we were actually treated so rudely that the memory still sticks with me. We were going to a show at the La Jolla Playhouse. We wanted to treat ourselves to a pre-show meal and cocktail. Despite there being plenty of space at the bar and quite a few open tables, the host acted quite bothered that we wanted to dine with them. We got the sense that were surprised that people that looked like us would want to (or could afford?) to eat there? (we were dressed casually, but not disheveled or in anyway that would be interpreted as disrespectful as far as I could tell). It was a little surprising and weird. We were seated tucked into a little corner where I guess we wouldn't bother anyone. We were brought one drink and we closed out our tab because we weren't made to feel comfortable in the restaurant. read more

We were just going to grab a couple sushi rolls before a show at the La Jolla Playhouse, not a full meal. So you would think that coming an hour and a half early on a slow weekday evening would be plenty of time. Nope! We didn't get our food until 20 minutes before curtain and had to bolt it and run. This is clearly a restaurant designed to serve the Playhouse patrons. It's literally steps away from the theater, it serves theme drinks to match the show, and it's priced to match the budgets of people who can afford live theater. But the service is ridiculously. I would have been impatient at any restaurant. At a theater restaurant? Argh!!!! Anyway, the food was fine. Nothing special. The atmosphere was fine. Nothing special, and not quite as nice as I would have expected from the location. But whatever. It's the speed that matters. If you'd like to have a nice dinner, there are plenty of better restaurants. And if you want to eat before your show, go somewhere with speedier service! read more

Next to the LaJolla Playhouse it is obviously very convenient isn't for a pre-theater meal but frankly I found the experience very disappointing . I recall when James was the "it" chef in San Diego at Japengo and for years, even after we moved away from San Diego, he was always a must see on our return trips. So you can understand how excited I was when I heard he re-opened and I had memories of the old Japengo reinforced by the James Place website. We arrived and frankly it looks like a function room they put some tables and chairs into. Nothing that tells me this restaurant could not be gone in under 30 minutes. We also learned that they discontinued Sushi. To me that's like McDonalds not making hamburgers or Rubios not having fish tacos. They said they hoped to bring it back someday. What!? We also noticed the average age of the diners was about 75 - who else goes to the LJ Playhouse? Clearly not a hip vibe -- think a safe comfortable cruise line crowd. Service staff was very courteous and the food was fine... I ordered the Chilean sea bass (apparently their #1 item) and what I got was a steamed baby carrot, some buttered/steamed green beans, and a small square of fish. It looks like any meal you'd get at a wedding held at Holiday Inn or Sheraton in the burbs. Mind you the food was fine -- but it was disappointing to come in with such high expectations for a fun dinner and leave thinking I just attended a quiet book club meeting for octogenarians. read more

I had a seaweed salad that was great and the lemon sushi roll was also very good. My friend had the pork chop that she said was not as tender as Morton's. My complaint is that this restaurant seems like a student dining hall turned restaurant. It is one big room. The acoustics were so bad it was terribly noisy. We even mentioned it to our server who acknowledged the problem. We were at a table for two and could hardly hear each other. While I would go back for the food I would not go due to the volume. While the bar is nice I would have put that money into sound insolation. read more
