We've had two homes painted by James Pugilese Painting. A rental in Pacifica and our residence in Redwood City. James said they even go as far as San Jose. They do a fantastic job at a good price. We were really impressed by their attention to detail when prepping the house. It pains me to write this review. While James and his crew did have some good qualities, overall there were some giant flaws. Lisa was incredibly responsive at first when they painted our home last year. In fact, the crew were fast and friendly and the house looked great initially. However, a few weeks later, paint in 3 rooms started cracking and bubbling off. I've been trying to get them to come back for ONE YEAR to fix these areas to NO AVAIL. As a small business who takes pride in their work and reputation, I would hope they would want to rectify this. My initial call was answered immediately by a very nice woman named Lisa. She promptly handled all the necessary details to get the job started. A couple weeks later, James and his crew arrived. They had with them the exact paint colors that Lisa was able to obtain from a photo that I sent her. The preparation work took most of their time. They not only showed respect for our property but also our neighbors, and they cleaned up after themselves daily. James kept us in the loop and was a perfectionist. No detail was overlooked. I'm writing this review solely because the company failed to return three phone calls requesting a bid to paint the exterior of our house. Each time I requested a return phone call even if they are unwillingly or unable to provide an estimate. My assumption is that, if they are out of town or have some sort of family emergency, there would at least be a message of this on their recorded phone answer. There was nothing of the sort. We worked with James, Lisa, and their crew for an exterior paint job for our home to live in, not for resale. Working with them was a wonderful experience for the following reasons: there were hiccups in the beginning (as it does with almost any job frankly) but everything got resolved ASAP, communication on expectations and timeline was clear, they noticed additional issues - some not even for their main work - just to give us a heads up. Now for the really special part: James and Lisa felt like neighbors coming to help us, I looked forward to talking with them, hearing about Pacifica history, how their day went, and their opinions on color matching. It really felt like they cared about whether the house looked good and we were happy with it. I really appreciated the personal collaboration and connection, and much preferred this over a detached, transactional exchange. It was unexpected but very nice to know there are still businesses like this, people like them, and I hope they are still around when we need to repaint again! read more

I wrote an earlier review on the very professional quotation that Lisa from the company gave me. Now let me tell you about the wonderful work that they did on our house. Every now and then I find a company that is so good that I wish that Yelp would allow me to give them 10 stars. This is one such instance. James Pugliese is among a dying group of people in the world-a true craftsman. He is also a lot of fun to work with. We hired him to do three things as follows: 1) Paint a good part of the interior of the house. 2) Paint the exterior of the house including the garage and railings. 3) Rebuild and paint a fence at the back of the property that was about to fall down due to rot and old age. They constantly exceeded our expectations. Their work was most professional. They always knew what they were doing. They knew how to work fast. They were constantly interacting with my wife and I to make sure that they were following our wishes. They really shined when it came to the back fence problem. Part of their team are two men who are superb carpenters. The fence was tilting over. Our first idea was to put it back upright. When this was attempted, the fence fell down. We knew we had a huge problem on our hands due to the high price of lumber right now. James's team was able to save all the wood from the fence except the fence posts. They rebuilt the fence and did a superb job of painting it and the deck, Their great worked saved us up to $5,000 in lumber costs. They earned every penny that they were paid!!!!! read more

I hate to update this review with some negativity but feel I should. Pugliese is still a very good painter but on my second house, it took them from November 6th to January 2nd to complete it. True we are not yet residing in the house as it was being renovated and there was much rain... but there was plenty of sunny days too. My initial easy-going acceptance about them taking longer as they had some rush jobs to do wore out. Communication was difficult and often took days for a text or call back. When they first "completed the house" I found numerous areas that were unfinished. I was assured they would be taken care of (and eventually they were). But... it took several return visits which simply made it a time consuming effort on my part to make myself available and reiterate the problems not addressed. And again, the difficulty with getting in touch and return phone calls. They are nice people and good painters - but they kind of dropped the ball on our second home. Although they came through in the end, I feel it important to convey these problems and to knock off a start from the stellar rating I had given them. Its a shame as I intended to hire them to do the interior of the new home but changed my mind after these experiences. Now I can only hope for follow-up should their paint degrade within the warranty since they painted in such damp conditions. As I've done before, I will not hesitate to pursue legally should they fail in this regard. read more
