Hobey Baker Memorial Rink - Pano shot at center ice. Definitely worth checking out, and the price is right!

Hobey Baker Arena was ancient when Woodrow Wilson stood between the pipes. First off, the sightlines are outstanding due to what can only be described as an intimate seating capacity. And here's the best part, if you like your sports slightly above freezing you are certainly pucked here - in July this arctic mausoleum must never get above 30 degrees and during the season it's positively Icelandic. Just be glad they have electricity. And for those of you that crave amenities well, there aren't any, so plan on visiting a 21st century eatery after the game. Hobey Baker Arena is the price you pay for old time hockey and if you're a fan, you wouldn't have it any other way. A true gem.

That's an NHL arena though whereas Baker Rink is a cozy 1200 person arena that hosts men's and women's college hockey games. Bring a coat for the winter games because there is no real heating as there are only 6 rows of seating so it doesn't have the advanced cooling systems modern arenas have. The seating is bleacher style, but it is reserved so you need a ticket and your seat is assigned. There is a small snack bar that has two lines. They accept cash and credit card and they serve pretzels, hot dogs, candy, soda and water. It isn't what you'd see at a professional game but it does the trick. The arena is clean and there is plenty of security so there aren't fan fights. Overall, I love going to games here because of the historic feel (being a historian, I'm kind of a suckered for that) and because of how close all of the fans are. Of you're into hockey and you're in the Princeton area, do yourself a favor and watch a game at Baker Rink.

Parking for the event was in one section and it was pretty tight but they did have parking assistants directing traffic which was nice. The manner in which the employer tables were arranged around the circular hallway was both smart and cool because job seekers were able to see all employers by simply walking the hallway. The signage for restrooms was confusing as many of them weren't open which was a bit frustrating and it would've been nice if there was a way to purchase or grab bottled water because it was hot inside. The overall experience in / at the arena was pretty middle of the road which is why the rating is 3 stars.

The line to check in at the door is long but moves quickly. They random check people with handbags, especially, big handbags or backpacks at the entry, and that's a bit of a drag in wait line but all others can just walk right inside and scan their tickets. Soon, I'm inside and walked around scoping the area for some quick bite. Like any arenas, food and drinks are ridiculously expensive. I got some crab fries and water. My husband's feelings got hurt when he learned there were no real crabs and it's just seasoned fries with some dipping sauce lol. It was $16 for a 16 ounce cup size. Go figure . The seats were decent with some cushion pad and there's good number of restrooms throughout the facility. Exiting the arena, it's a one way exit to control the traffics and turnpike entrance is right nearby. We will definitely look more concerts here now that we know how convenient it is.

You can hear the crack of the bat and the chatter from the dugout without straining. Baseball as it should be seen. The Delaware River runs right behind the outfield. On hot nights the breeze rolls in off the water. It cools the air, turns the place into something comfortable when the rest of New Jersey is sweating. That is not something you can engineer. That is geography being kind. Parking is easy. Five dollars. Cash only. Plentiful and close. In a world where stadium parking often feels like extortion, this is practically charity. The food is not just food. It is a catalog of local pride. Case's Pork Roll. Killarney's. Rita's Italian Water Ice. Raccoon Saloon. Alongside these sit Colbie's Southern Fried Chicken and Boomer's BBQ. If none of that calls to you there are still the old standards. Hot dogs. Pretzels. Popcorn. Nachos. The ballpark classics are covered. There is even a picnic area down the left field line for groups who want baseball and burgers in equal measure. The ballpark is easy to get to. Right on Route 29 by the riverfront. Quick access to 29, 129, I-195, and I-295. No mazes. No confusion. A night here is affordable, easy, and close to the event in every sense. Five stars.
