This place is pretty dope. At times it can be hit or miss, but it really depends on what type of atmosphere you're looking for. This is the little dive bar that could. Whatever you need Jack's has it. Strong and cheap drinks. Local and unpretentious folks. Food and flat screens. Outdoor patio and fresh air. Jukebox and beer pong. The music and crowd is not your downtown Top 40 type. The vibe lightweight reminds me of a house party. Jack's outdoor heated patio paired with Roy's Caribbean food is a main draw for me. The patio is wide open like cyprians on call. Just moved in down the street from this place, figured I would drop in and give it a twirl. They have Newcastle and Stella in bottles, which are my go to beers and that made me quite happy. Was helped really quickly by an attractive bartendress, who was on top of her game to refill once my bottles were getting empty. Had lots of sports on, most importantly the Sharks game... bonus. Jukebox is a nice touch, not too loud, not too quiet. Boo for the dude playing an entire album of Nickelback though. It was a thursday, DJ came in around 10 or so... not a great selection of music, but also not crummy club music so its a wash. Plenty of seating, got crowded but didn't get too crowded. No thug wannabe idiots, no scummy bums, no wasted and out of control peeps. Overall a decent vibe. I like beer pong and all, but to have a beer pong table right outside the bathroom is a little nasty. Unless you're sinking a cup everytime or your water cup has bleach in it, that is just FOUL. All in all for a San Jose joint, not bad. I'll have to give it a go on a Friday or Saturday though, seems like it is one of those places that could lose or gain a star depending on the night. read more

It's a fun neighborhood bar. It's one of the better bars near my work, so I'll stop by occasionally after work for some brews with friends. It's kind of a dive bar, there's a mixed crowd, bartenders are all pretty cool, some times they'll hook you up with free drinks whenever they're drinking. Not something I ever expect but it's cool to see when it happens. It's diverse crowd and there isn't really a dress code, at least I've never seen anyone get rejected for coming in with sneakers and sports apparel, it's not that type of club. On the busy nights like Thursday through Saturday they'll have a DJ, I think they have it on Wednesday too but I could be wrong. The place gets pretty busy later at night when the DJ's show up. They have several flat screen televisions which play various shows but usually sports if they're on. On special events like World Cup, they'll open up super early so patrons can come and watch, they'll also serve breakfast too. I thought that was awesome. They have happy hour specials which are pretty inexpensive. There's food options close by and they'll let you eat food inside. Just don't be a douche and leave your mess every where, try to clean up. They only thing I hate is that the place is pretty small, especially now that they've closed off the patio area because the neighbors complained about the noise. Also if you choose to play beer pong, the only place you can play is in the hallway near the bathroom, kind of gross if you ask me but I don't play so it's not really a concern for me. read more

So I went to this place for the first time this Saturday, was pretty tired from work, didnt want to really head downtown, cause im pretty sick of it. I really didnt expect to find a cozy lil dive bar, totally looked like it was renovated with new floor, new seats bar was clean and flat screen TV's. I met up with my girl and her friend, at first it was completely dead! Maybe a total of 6 people including us. The bartender Matt was really cool, did some bar tricks while making the drinks which was pretty entertaining, and he was really friendly to everyone. Slowly people started coming into the bar to the point where all the seats were full, some people standing up and socializing. I seriously loved the environment. I gotta go back for a sports event cause I heard the Pacquiao was showing at the bar. Stuffed to the gills from my adventure at Trials Pub... my friend and I decided to walk to Jacks. This all came about as a suggestion from a coworker who lives with one of the owners.... he was heading over after work and I was like... "what the hell..." So we walked....from Trials to Jacks. I kinda wish we had not but oh well...it worked. haha After walking what seemed like forever... (which was a sorta nice way to burn off the amazing fries we had just eaten) ...we arrive at this bar. From the outside it looked SUPER tiny...and was bumping some loud music. For a moment...we were like "oh no..." but after walking in...it was OH YES. The staff was friendly (I am sure it didnt hurt knowing someone who was a regular) ...but in observation, the staff seemed to be wonderful to everyone. Even people I might not have been so wonderful to. We drank quite a bit and had a great time. Prices were very reasonable and I left feeling good about the whole experience. Jack's is a tiny neighborhood dive bar in Japantown near the corner of N 4th St. and E Taylor St. They have a full bar and 10 draught beer taps, the usual fare. Stopped by on a Sunday during a Niners game and the only food they appeared to be serving was a hot dog and nacho bar. Ironically they are next to a Wienerschnitzel. It was a real sausage fest and I was looking for a cheesesteak. $4.50 for a 12oz. bottle of Coors Light seemed expensive given the surroundings. I might be back someday to see if they really serve the elusive cheesesteak. read more

I heart Jack's. It's a great neighborhood bar with some major perks: nice bartenders, a spacious patio, and, miracle of miracles, niiiiiiiice bathrooms! (Sorry, though, but there is nooooo way you can call this place a dive now. Some of you sheltered types need to get out more.) Plus, they are amazing supporters of the Silicon Valley Roller Girls, so you have to love them for their support of the community! The place does get packed, but that just means more fun. My only caveat is be careful where you're standing in the bar, because the speakers can be deafening (and, um, well, with the nice, strong drinks those sweet bartenders are offering, you might not notice until the next morning and your ears are ringing along with your pounding hangover headache.) Jack's has been newly remodeled and kicks ass. It has a very cozy bar/lounge kind of feel to it, quite an intimate enviornment. If you ever went to the old Jacks, you will be blown away by the improvements. They've got a few beers on tap and a full line of booze to choose from. All the people who work there are really fun and friendly. The prices aren't bad and the juke box has a killer selection of tunes. The crowd is mixed with a nice variety of fun party goers down to have a good time. Oh and ladies, the bathrooms are clean and very not scary to use. read more

I had tried a few times to check this place out. Mostly Saturday afternoons but they don't open until 3pm. So one Thursday while waiting for another place to open. I decided to stop here and check it out. I was surprised how clean this place is. No it's not big. The selection is very good for a neighborhood bar. They have a few HDTVs, can bring in food, actually is a member of beer pong league, good juke box and a nice place in a somewhat off the path place. The staff is friendly and professional. Jack's definitely wouldn't be my first choice bar, but it's certainly not a BAD choice either. It's pretty dive-y (which I don't say as an insult necessarily), but not dirty or sketchy or anything like that. Just very no-frills. It's got a pretty large back patio, but the table situation out there could definitely use some updating - there are few picnic tables, and then a few tables with mismatched chairs (all of which could use a hose down). The beer selection is ok, they do have wine, but it's for sure grocery store bottom-shelf level (eg not very good), and I have never ordered a cocktail here, so I can't speak to that. So all in all, it's a perfectly fine neighborhood bar if you're just looking for a lowkey spot to hang with friends, but don't count on any craft beers or high-end cocktails! read more

Definitely my go to spot in DTSJ. It helps that we live 3 blocks away. The drinks are always strong and never more than $3-5. Throw in beer pong, corn-hole and dope music and you got yourself a night! I think I find myself here at least 3-4 times a month. It can be a little dive-y if you haven't been here before. It gets super packed on the weekends, but you can always venture outside. Sometimes they have jerk chicken out back. We haven't tried it yet, but if it's like what w get in Jamaica, then we're all about it. Definitely worth a try if you're just looking to chill and get drunk. read more

A friend of mine who hasn't been to Jack's in five years, called me at 4:00 p.m. on a Friday. He asked me what I was doing, "Having a beer at Jack's," I said. "Who's with you?" he asked. "Just me." I replied. He paused, and then asked, "Is everything okay?" He wanted to make sure I wasn't feeling depressed, and I had to clarify by explaining to him that Jack's is definitely not the shameful place it used to be. It used to have the smell of moldy fixtures, their credit card machine was always failing, and the bathroom was basically a toilet behind a stock room. It used to be just a place to drink before going out drinking. Now it's becoming more of a place to be. New owners came in and gave it some new class. Updated fixtures, a built-in sound system, actual bathrooms, six flat screen TVs and DJs spinning on weekends. A small reinvented neighborhood bar on the edge of Japantown is just what we needed. read more

Modest dive bar in San Jose. There's a bit of charm about Jack's. It's like one of those jukey places that look a bit foreboding but once inside--it's a nice place to kick back, decompress, or just chat about with the lads. They have the occasional beer pong game and drink specials so there is something for everyone. Compared to similar places that tend to take a pass on the telly, they do show the usual sports selection--this is key especially since a few like me would like to find a place to watch a game and just relax--be solo or with a group but without the distraction of younger folk.. They get cred for showing soccer (and hockey in addition to the usual baseball, football, and hoops) especially since some of the other places have become too crowded and/or trendy. Other dive bars I've visited concentrate on just selling drinks and maybe a performer/musician/DJ. It's not as fancy as the other places with big screens but still--a TV is a TV--this is key especially since a few like me would like to find a place to watch/tune out to a game and just relax--be solo or with a group but without the distraction of younger folk. Though Jack's is not a restaurant (on your own with the food) it's still a nice quaint place to hang out. There's bang for the buck going to Jack's--I went there on a Saturday night in November to see the Quakes/Rapids match and in January to meet up with the lads. If you're in Japantown in San Jose and just want a bit of escape--this place gets props. Close to excellent but enough for me to hang out when I'm in San Jose. A very chill (and small) bar. They have really cool art displayed on their walls and they play pretty good music here. This isn't really a place to go to if you're trying to get you're freak on because there really isn't much of a dance floor. I think you'd feel out of place too if you did try anyhow. I think the bartenders are awesome! They are definitely not stingy at all and $5 for a shot of grey goose (which was more like a double shot). Sweet! The patio outback is pretty cool too. A lot of smokers hang out here and they have heated lamps. Overall, awesome place. I would definitely come back. read more

My second time here. The beer wasn't as cold as the first time, but it was still good. Hubby and I left to go get something to eat, and the Creole place was closed so we went to a Mexican restaurant and brought the food back. They didn't even mind that we brought food in. Been working in Japantown for several years but always passed by this place. Recently got back into watching soccer and found out that this place net to my work plays soccer games all the time. Took my lunch hour and came and watched my Chelsea play. It was a bit quiet, but it was a weekday lunch hour. A girl and a guy were running the bar with a few people in there. Very friendly atmosphere as far as I could tell. Got to talk about sports with a gentleman there. The girl behind the bar cooked me up a philly cheesesteak. Pretty good for bar food. Really cool considering it's right next to my work and they play soccer games. They had three TVs I think playing sports. Wish the screen for the soccer was bigger but not too many establishments have those sort of games playing when you want them to. read more

I've been to Jack's 3 or 4 times now. I'm fairly new to Yelp and have been looking up places to go near where I live and have found many places I never knew existed that make this city great. Jack's was on my list to go try out and it didn't disappoint. The first night I went there I saw a few old school pals from middle school, which was great. I also found out several more of my long lost friends visit there infrequently and am waiting for a night we might see each other. Pretty much anywhere you go the drinks are the same, but the atmosphere, friendly bartenders, and friendly fellow bar goers make it a great place to go. I rarely stay out till closing time at a bar, but found myself losing track of time and we stayed there until 2AM last Saturday. Try it out and see if it 's your cup of tea. Great non-downtown bar to hit up. UPDATE: Since the first 3 or 4 visits, I've gone about 3 or 4 times. Not once was the bar nearly as social as it has been. Also the bartender that was on call the last time was fairly awkward and weird. I changed my rating from a 4 star to a 3. I was initially drawn to Jack's Bar because I heard it was a great hang out for Quakes fans during the games. It doesn't take much for a bar that plays Quakes games on the main screens to win my heart. Indeed, this rumor was true. They even played it over a Giants game. Now if only the team can start picking it up. The bar's a little dive-y, but in a fun way. It's not large, but big enough to hold big crowds, especially with the patio in the back. The drinks are cheap, especially during the games. The bartenders are friendly. The cheesesteak is delicious. What more is there to love? The only downside is that there's no actual parking lot. It's really not that hard to find parking on the streets nearby, but it's definitely something to keep an eye out for. Beyond that, Jack's Bar is pretty awesome. I didn't even know Jack's existed until I was desperately searching for a place open Christmas night (had ENOUGH of the family time and could really really use a drink!)! The place was packed, a DJ was spinning awesome throw-back mash-ups and dancing harder then most of the patrons and the bartenders were doing shots between drink orders which came fast and hard. Jack's is the kind of bar you amble down to around 7 pm hoping that it will surprise you as the diamond in the Silicon Valley rough; while it is a good bar, the surprises are somewhat limited. Granted: the beer selection is good. And the bartenders are nice. But the clientele is primarily split between older, charming regulars, and younger white tattooed men who say things like "I haven't seen your sorry ass in awhile, motherfucker!" with a straight face. And there is no real food, unless you count the Weinerschnitzel next door. Also, on one particular shameful New Year's Eve, the bar demanded a cover at the door even though a.) the bar was not busy and b.) there was no band playing. But there is now a beer garden. 3.5, if I could. This place is like frat house for people not in college anymore. First, it's located in the middle of a random street, nearby some houses and a neighborhood. Next, it's full of young people that look like they just graduated and/or are just above the age appropriate for frat parties. Myself included. Jack's is a one room bar. The room has a bar on one side and some tables on the other. In the back, you can walk through a small hallway that includes bathrooms and a beer pong table that is portruding out of the wall. That's right. The beer pong table is right next to the bathroom. Then you go outside to the back area, which seriously, looks like the backyard of a frat house, complete with a couple of dirty looking table benches and a fence and tool shed. And in the front right corner, there's some guy selling food under a tent. No joke. It's like I suddenly traveled back in time 7 years, except I had to pay for my drinks. Buttttt... no gonna lie... it was fun playing beer pong again. Even if the ping pong ball did roll into the bathroom several times. read more

I live 2 blocks away, so it's very convenient to be able to walk here. It's a bit dive bar-ish, but as long as you're with good company, it doesn't really matter. It can get really crowded and loud on weekends or special events, which I don't like, so unless you're pretty buzzed, you might get irritated. The bartenders are pretty nice, prices are pretty good, drinks are strong (screw fruity stuff), and the music selection is awesome. Their DJs are usually pretty cool and I like the Jamaican theme with all the local artwork posted around the room. There's an outdoor area too, if you wanna smoke cigarettes or get some cool air cuz it can get hot inside. Cleanest bar bathroom I've ever seen and I've never seen a ridiculous line for the girls bathroom. Thumbs up. read more

Cool little spot in Japan Town, right next door to a Foster's Freeze and Weinerschnitzel so easy access to the late night munchies. Looks like the place is super small (which it is), but outback the area is relatively large and would throw most people off. The place is a typical dive bar, but they do have cool art on the walls and outside. Big plus on having a beer pong table near the back and super hot bartender!
