Rachel excels at determining exactly which lab tests to order, how to interpret them, and then how to prescribe the best supplements to correct the problem. She is especially adept at resolving hormonal issues and cholesterol problems, but can handle any medical problem, and especially preventative care. However, she is also there with a hug at the right time when needed. She is brilliant, caring, and very kind-hearted, and this comes through in her holistic approach. Rachel really helped me and gave me my quality of life back. She listens and takes the time to get to the real root of the problem. I truly trust her and her body of knowledge and can't I imagine not receiving this kind of healthcare. I am super happy with the high-quality healthcare I am getting from Rachel. The only downside to Rachel's practice is that her office does not bill insurance plans and she is not a preferred provider on PPO plans and is not on any HMO plans, so she is out of network. However, this is understandable given that dealing with insurance companies is an unpleasant, full-time job. Therefore, her services are expensive, but are worth it, so overall it's a good value. When it comes to your health, it's really worth it. If you just want to take a pill for the rest of your life and are OK with all of the possible side effects, then integrative medicine is probably not for you. However, if you want to be able to spend quality time with your doctor and be able to talk to and work with your doctor to get to the root of the problem and solve it, and not just mask the symptoms, then Rachel is who you want to see for your healthcare.

He has personally written doctors on my behalf. He is a great advocate and knows the medical system. Clinical trials, new EDS research, and also solutions to my particular knee problem. He has good instructions on how to deal with doctors. His motto for that is: "No screaming. No crying." Lol. He is also encouraging and cares about his patients. Even our toughest conversations, I felt supported and seen. Not scared of examining patients and rolling up his sleeves. Well-versed in historical medicine. As another example, I had an elderly relative with extremely complex medical issues. Dr. Desai was only a phone call away to speak with my relative's care facility, adjust medicines, and speak with the hospitalist when he was in the hospital. I don't know of any family physician that would be able to provide that level of care! Dr. Desai practices medicine the old fashioned way - by spending time with the patient and getting to know the patient. Not only is he an excellent physician, but he is excellent at advocating for his patients in our complex healthcare system. I am fortunate to have a medical insurance plan that reimburses me for a percentage of certain appointments with Dr. Motyka but I did have to adjust my budget quite a bit to be able to afford to sign up. I feel like it is worth it because Dr. Motyka has saved me countless hours of researching health options and feeling confused about which treatment to pursue when I have various ailments. She has also provided us with many very useful and effective health tips which I had never heard of before. I had pneumonia or bronchitis prior to seeing Dr. Motyka. I knew I needed to do something differently with my health if I was going to be able to keep on working so I made a regular appointment with Dr. Motyka to get to know her before signing up for her concierge service. After I became part of her concierge service she recommended a regime of supplements and my first-ever probiotics and my health has been very strong ever since. I have really appreciated having Dr. Motyka for my children's health care as well and feel that she has helped me feel I am doing a better job now about giving them quality medical care. She also gives me advice when I ask for it such as regarding dietary advice and post menopausal issues. Thanks to Dr. Motyka I have been able to lose a few extra pounds and she has been very helpful with navigating my post-menopausal issues. It is also so nice to be able to call her office and get an appointment within a week - I can also call her directly on her cell phone to speak with her when I have a question and she usually answers the first time I call! If she isn't able to pick up she calls me back very quickly. The same goes for her office manager Charley. I also communicate with them via e-mail type messages in a medical portal. I like having one doctor who deals with all of my health issues (of course referring me to specialists as needed) and who sees me and treats me as a whole being and not just a foot, thyroid, shoulder, etc.(the functional medicine philosophy). Another reason I signed up for Dr. Motyka's concierge services was that I love her radio show "Ask Dr. Dawn". I really appreciate her science-based medical advice that she brings into down-home remedies that work! It feels to me like I am taking an on-going health class with the radio show being the lectures! As with any doctor, I need to come prepared with my questions and a summary of my needs and history since she can sometimes get mixed up about my history or my treatment. However, I really feel that she cares about me and my family and gives us personalized treatment.

I have only seen Dr. Houlahan twice but he was a really great doctor but the real saving grace of this facility is the urgent care. I only have a 15$ compay for the urgent care so would come here to get my blood drawn for chloresterol, std testing, and for any type of sickness and was just really great and convenient when I was really sick or hurting. Moved back to the Bay Area so will be switching primary care physicians soon because I can't drive back to Santa Cruz every time for an appointment but I really liked this hospital facility.

They threw away 2 vials of my blood and sent the other 5 to the 2 doctors who requested them. MY hands are still hurting with swollen veins.
