So I stood there for a good 10 minutes before I realized that I was in a French chain store, being polite in it AND expecting to be acknowledged, a combination sure to disappoint. So I did what I've learned works: raise my voice. Then I made the mistake of going back to being nice, at which point I could likely have walked out with 28 packs of T-shirts and the sales girls wouldn't have noticed. C'est la vie...
