It was amazing of course; I didn't really care for the German potato soup because it may be an acquired taste with the sauerkraut.... tried something new.... probably should have gotten fries, but I wasn't mad because I barely finished by Crunchwrap... I had to force myself to put its own because it was sooooooo good. So, ever since they started serving the "burger that bleeds" (100% plant-based) I found that an overwhelmingly disturbing number of patrons order this--the single "patty" burger, but also the "Big Mac" version of a double patty with three buns. I could not count how many were flying out of the kitchen, so much so that I commented to my friend, "Wow...who comes to a vegan restaurant to order something that looks like a hamburger?" Well, I take that back, since we both ordered the same thing: "burgers." Of course, the cheese, mayo, bacon, and burger aren't "real"--they're all plant-based. That's the gimmick. But to see literally everybody for a full straight hour during dinner rush order the "cheeseburger" was alarming. Anyway...DO NOT GO DURING DINNER RUSH. I beg of you, please, do not go--even on a Tuesday--to dinner rush. You will wait 40 minutes for your food while you run out of conversation and endlessly watch everybody else receive the same thing you ordered thinking their order was going to be yours. It's torture! After we were finally served our order (ordered at 6:30 p.m., food came at 7:10 p.m.), we noticed the bottom of the "patty" was scorched to a CRISP. Literally, the patty was so blackened on the bottom by rights we should have sent it back. But, we were so hungry we just resigned ourselves to our fate and loaded it with sauces hoping that would mask the burnt. They don't give you mustard at the table, but I did find they keep it behind the counter. And it's dijon mustard! It made my sandwich (after all, plants can be so bland). While my friend had the spiced-up tater tots (the BEST! Have you ever had Taco John's Potato Ole's? It's like x10), I opted for a curry chickpea soup with kale. The soup was okay, probably a bit more healthy as I've been laying hard on potatoes lately, but I really, really yearned for tots! (They have a tater tot appetizer that comes with a butt load of tots with 4 kinds of dipping sauces to try out...gonna get that next time.) So, the only gripe I had was the verrry slow kitchen service, which, I'm sorry, shouldn't be excused as they've been around a while and this was kind of an off-night. The kombucha drinks will break the bank, as well, so either just serve yourself some free water or grab a carafe of water for the table; or, get a can of La Croix bubbly water. I've been wanting to come here for a while now. I am not vegan but I have a lot of allergies. I can't have dairy or eggs which is nice because I never have to worry about that when I go to vegan restaurants. I ordered the cauliflower buffalo wings and the tater tots with the cheese on the side. I loved the cauliflower and the homemade ranch. I thought the tater tots were cooked really nicely with a great crunch. I didn't love the cheese sauce. It was a bit bland to me. My boyfriend got one of the hotdog options I forget which one. He ordered not realizing it was a vegan restaurant... lol. He didn't love it and said he couldn't taste the actual sausage very much but could feel the texture of it when we was eating it. I'm general I'm not the biggest fan of vegan sausage. I think if he would have known that it was vegan before he would have ordered something different. He also got a side of fries (which neither one of us loved). He said he would give the food he ordered a 3. Only because he felt like he didn't order the best of the menu. I give it a 4 solely on the cauliflower wings. They were wonderful but I also LOVE cauliflower. I do wish more ranch came with it! They're better with it on! OH MY GOD. YES. I was so blown away by this establishment. Excellent vegan dishes, a comfortable and casual atmosphere, and located in the cutest little neighborhood. When in town for a show, my friend and I went out of our way to check this place out, and we were not disappointed. I ordered the "chicken" caesar salad (something that is rarely ever vegan, due to caesar dressing) and my friend ordered the buffalo "chicken" wrap. First of all, incredible portions at such an affordable price for vegan food. This establishment has converted to no tipping, which I personally adore. Second of all, INCREDIBLE food. I was almost ready to lick my plate in public. The staff were all delightful and friendly, service and food prompt, and cleanliness was clearly a priority. Selby's is one of the few places that is ALL plant-based, so if you're vegan, you can rest easy for once knowing that any menu option is safe. We started off with the cauliflower wings and all the sauces (ranch, buffalo, bbq, and sweet chili). The cauliflower wasn't too battered and wasn't greasy! We loved all the sauces! For an entree, we split the dirty secret, similar to the Big Mac. I was amazing, the cheeze melted perfectly, the patties were from a brand I've never heard of and boy they tasted great! We chose the spicy slaw as our side, not too spicy but very flavorful. Additionally, you can order any burger or dog "UnBun", which lays on a bed of greens and quinoa. I really enjoyed my brunch here! I had the tofu scramble, which was very good. In the end I personally prefer eggs, but it was tasty! I also had the 1/2 order of biscuits and gravy, which i really enjoyed. It is so hard to find B&G without the sausage gravy! Pros: The best thing about this place are the weekly vegan shakes. They go with a different flavor each week and I've tried the mocha and the salted caramel. Both were the most delicious things I've had in my mouth and I would have one everyday is it wasn't winter now! The shakes are also at a decent price point. Cons: the food is alright for vegan fare. Not the best but not the worst. The prices are also really high for Rondo and the quality. Fries are really good, and I've tried the gyro and the Philly. Now they ran out of sub bread so the Philly was on a regular bread which definetly didn't help, but overall it just didn't have that rich smoky flavor that comes with that sandwich. The gyro was better but the sauce definitely needed more flavor. Lastly, this place is not black owned so having it in the heart of Rondo (St. Paul's historically black neighborhood) just feels strange imo. It's tasty, service is tolerably quick, good beer/wine selection, and certainly you can take your vegan and gluten free friends here. I was, however, underwhelmed. Most of the menu is attempts to clone things that omnivores eat, but with soy. If you file off all the adjectives, it's all basically nachos, burgers, dogs, and other dive bar food. The salad selection is not strong, and while you can "un bun" any burger, the results are not appetizing. A naked patty next to a heap of kale doesn't feed the senses. Folks, when most things are mainly protein or come from a deep fryer, it's not health food. Hard to imagine a reason to come here if you're not vegan and craving a burger. If you're trying to eat more plants for your health, get something like the salads at Cafe latte just down the street. read more

If you order at the restaurant for takeout you'll end up paying some extra fees (tip, service charge, takeout fee, takeout container fee) in addition to the higher prices of the food itself. I'm not a vegetarian or normally eat vegan food, but I've been trying to eat healthier and add more veggies to my diet, etc. I thought the prices were a little high, but they don't expect tips here. It was definitely worth the price because every thing was so good! My husband ordered the spicy black bean burger, and it kinda fell apart on him, but he still enjoyed it. I've been here twice now. Once for brunch and Once for dinner. Heads up, they do brunch Saturday and Sunday I believe until 2 or 3, they close for an hour and reopen at 4ish. Big Mac but vegan!! It was amazing. I do wish they put a lot more special sauce to make it more Big Mac like. The patties were amazing from the herbivorous butcher, a little spicy. We also had the buffalo wings. Wish we got plain wings with buffalo or BBQ sauce on the side. The kids chicken tenders were delicious too. I'm coming back to try everything on the menu!! This is the first food I ate when I got off the train in Saint Paul. I had heard great things! As a vegetarian living in beef country, a place like J Selby's is a dream for me. Our group order: vegan friend got 1 crunchwrap with french fries I, the vegetarian, got 1 crunchwrap with chili cup the other vegan friend got 1 buffalo chicken wrap the carnivore got 1 fried rice bowl We were all quite pleased! Both vegan friends live in the area and frequent J Selby's regularly. The carnivore said the fried rice was one of the best things he had ever eaten - I had a bite and totally agreed. As for my chili cup, it was good, standard chili. Nothing special. It will fill you up and taste good. The crunchwrap was great...aside from the fact that the entire first layer had the most thick layer of vegan yellow cheeze slices that never did melt and just did not add anything good to the crunch wrap. Vegan queso is easy to replicate - why not use that? All that aside, it was good when I picked the cheeze out. And I even ate the leftovers cold later that day which is something I never do - so you know it's good :) A random thing I enjoyed - the crunch wrap was packed with quality shredded dark green lettuce. It's pretty amazing because my best friend came with, we had the nachos (yummy & HUGE) and a couple of brownies, and within a week she went vegan! I love their apps, desserts, and their entrees are pretty dang good as well. I pop by at least a couple times a month, service is good too and I love their initiative to feed anyone in need for whatever they can pay. To begin, let's say I will need to re-visit J. Selby's again to get a more accurate review of my experience. I have only been able to try the brunch on the weekend which was not what I was planning originally. Brunch goes until 3 PM on weekends, so be sure to plan accordingly if you're looking to get a vegan burger or something more 'meaty' That said, I was impressed with the entire setup. I also appreciate the chance to try a Vegan-only restaurant. It definitely makes you feel healthier and better when you're supporting locally sourced crops in the community. The ambiance was great and location was good with a decent amount of street parking available. It was packed when we arrived though you will have no trouble finding a seat as people come and go Brunch menu is simple. Prices are a bit higher given the sourcing of ingredients and quality Ordered - Blueberry Granola Buckwheat Pancakes (3.5/5). A bit plain to my tasting (usually am fine with it). It is hearty, well portioned, and taste generally like a regular pancakes. Though, I felt like something was missing. Maybe it was too dry? I am not sure how to explain but it wasn't a favorite - Fresh Orange Juice (5/5). Good as always Brunch was alright. Wow, this place was a revelation to me. Anyone reading my reviews knows that I'm a committed omnivore. My daughter is a vegetarian. She and I have discovered numerous places where we can both enjoy dining out together. I've had some very good vegetarian meals. But to me, strictly vegan food seemed a bit too austere and uninviting. My bad! I could eat here several times a week. We started by sharing a generously portioned order of Buffalo Wings (cauliflower "wings" in Buffalo Sauce with celery sticks & ranch dressing) and an ample Hummus Plate (plain, jalapeno, and kalamata olive hummus served with fresh pita and veggies). The cauliflower wings are, in my estimation superior to any boneless chicken wing I've ever tried. Each bite was a burst of flavor packing a traditional spicy, vinegary punch with an appeallingly firm texture. The various hummus offerings were all fresh and appealing. We could easily have stopped with appetizers but my daughter had ordered the Dirty Secret (two Herbivorous Butcher beaf patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheeze, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun) and I the "Bacun" Caesar (romaine, parmesan, tempeh bacun, fresh croutons & seasonal greens with a house Caesar dressing). Again, we received substantial servings of delicious, savory, well prepared goodness. Daughter added a tap Ginger Pink Lady Kombucha (that she pronouced excellent) and I a fresh squeezed lemonade (refreshingly, puckery good sippin'). We topped everything off by splitting an outstanding Chocolate Chip cookie that frankly bested many such treats as proferred by local non-vegan establishments. We ended up taking home much of what we ordered because it was so filling and satisfying. Of note, they were out of Falafel (my original choice, hence the salad) and several other items as well. Not unexpected for a newish establishment. Oh well, it gives me a reason to go back (not that I needed special motivation) to try the Falafel and check out more of the menu. Staff were all gracious, efficient and knowledgeable. Prices a true bargain, especially given the superb quality of their fare. I never thought it'd be possible to eat a burger, wings, tacos, and nachos without feeling like a total tub of lard. Thank you, J. Selby's, for making that dream into reality. I think it's pretty damn spectacular that the whole menu is plant-based/vegan, and I appreciate that the vegan cheese is NOT tree nut-based. My marketing team rolled in here at 11am right when they opened. I advise doing the same for lunch, since a long line formed behind us. We ordered the Cauliflower wings, nachos, Dirty Secret burger, and tacos. For drinks we opted for the kombucha on tap and their grapefruit lemonade special, I think the ginger-granny smith kombucha was the fave. We were given a number and our food began arriving to our table not too long after. Out of everything we ordered, the "wings" and burger were my favorite. Some of the cauliflower actually looked like drummies, which really helps trick one into eating a big ol' vegetable. The amazing beer-batter and tangy buffalo sauce sure as hell helped too. As for the "Dirty Secret", I can totally get behind a burger that is satisfying and sustainable, plus has great sauce and pickles to boot. The nachos and tacos were pretty good and I still am impressed by vegan sour cream and chorizo. I wish the tacos were more savory, spicy, and meaty, though, they mostly contained sauteed veggies with a natural sweetness. Another qualm was that with the self-service format, it was a little challenging receiving direction or items (takeout boxes and a missing guacamole) from the busy staff. But here's the real kicker: I was free of guilt and hunger for 6 hours... which is totally unheard of for me! J. Selby's would be the first place I go if I was transitioning and vegan-ning a vegan diet. I was impressed- everything is PLANT-BASED. If someone didn't tell me, I would've never been able to tell. I was a fan of the buffalo bites (cauliflower in vegan buffalo sauce) and the "Dirty Secret," which features vegan patties from the Herbivorous Butcher. We arrived at 6:00pm on a Friday and the line was about 20 people deep from door to register but it took only 5-10 minutes to get up to the front! When you order they give you a number and you find a table which was easy as tables turn over quickly. No reservations as this is a casual place. We ordered: Buffalo Wings $8 (very good and spicy) basket of cauliflower "wings" in Buffalo Sauce with celery sticks & ranch dressing (firm but not crunchy!) Dirty Secret $15 (favorite of them all) our version of the fast food icon with two Herbivorous Butcher beaf patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheeze, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun Street Tacos $9 (good but preferred burger) three soft tortillas with spicy chorizo, diced potatoes, onions, green peppers & avocado with salsa & sour cream gs with corn tortillas Brownie $4 (very much like a normal brownie) a seriously fudgy, dark, moist brownie with or without walnuts. Tried their brunch (delicious!), then a week later I went back for lunch... MIND BLOWING! I don't think I've ever been to a restaurant - vegan or not - where every single thing I've tried has been exceptional, & where everything on the menu sounds appealing. I struggled to order, not because I could find something I wanted, but because I had about a dozen things that I desperately wanted to try. I settled on the buffalo wings, soft pretzel, and strawberry mint kombucha, my friend got the quesadilla, and raspberry lemonade. All of it was incredible. I haven't stopped thinking about the buffalo wings for 2 weeks, they are honestly one of the best things I've ever eaten. The ranch dip was perfection, I never would have known it was vegan. Same goes for the sour cream that came with the quesadilla, YUM, highly recommended. The soft pretzel was so fresh, and it's enormous for only $4.50! The kombucha was also an impressive portion size and very refreshing. The lemonade was my favorite though, it wasn't overly sweet which was nice! Everything I have tried here is good. Just because it is vegan, doesn't mean the food is healthy! The fried cauliflower wings are delicious and so are the tater tots, but you can go for the rainbow wrap, a bowl, or the community meal if you are avoiding fried foods. The community meal is not a set price, but rather a "pay what you can" price range. This is an incredible option that makes this restaurant very welcoming to all. The prices here are very reasonable, considering there is no tipping. And, you get a 10% discount if you are a Mississippi Market member! Don't forget to try the dessert menu. Yum. read more
