Everything I have tried here is good. Just because it is vegan, doesn't mean the food is healthy! The fried cauliflower wings are delicious and so are the tater tots, but you can go for the rainbow wrap, a bowl, or the community meal if you are avoiding fried foods. The community meal is not a set price, but rather a "pay what you can" price range. This is an incredible option that makes this restaurant very welcoming to all. The prices here are very reasonable, considering there is no tipping. And, you get a 10% discount if you are a Mississippi Market member! Don't forget to try the dessert menu. Yum. read more

You definitely do not have to be vegan to love this place. Three of us decided to come on a whim on a Thursday evening and for being a bit later (~8pm), they were packed. There were still a few open tables though, and with the long family style table in the middle, I'm sure they can get people in and out pretty quickly. When you arrive, you take a menu and order at the counter. It is such a nice, wide open modern space encompassed with windows and natural lighting--I love it. As my sister remarked though, it did get quite loud since it is one large square room with nothing to dissipate the noise. Between the three of us, we split the Dirty Secret (equivalent of a Bic Mac-$15), falafel platter ($11), and J.'s house salad ($8). We unanimously agreed that the Dirty Secret was our favorite, but none of the dishes left us disappointed. The salad was a huge portion, and we took some as leftovers. Even the roll it was served with was quite good (especially dipped in the mustard salad dressing). Everything was delivered within 10 minutes of ordering! Prices seem relatively reasonable--$15 was a little high for the Dirty Secret but I hold to the idea that you get what you pay for and would definitely order it again. Additionally, there are many drinks available, including wine, beer, coffee, tea, natural sodas, and kombucha. Both the Dirty Secret and falafel platter came with one side so we chose fries and a side salad (since we didn't realize that the salad entree would be such a large portion). Fries were crispy and the salad with mustard dressing, which had a nice kick to it, was a healthy mix of leafy greens and vegetables. I would without hesitation get any and all of these dishes again. The menu has so many tempting items...next time, the SoyCones (seems to be equivalent of a Blizzard) will definitely be on my list since we noticed that almost every table had one--they must be good. Something to keep in mind is that you shouldn't expect everything to taste exactly like a burger or other meat. Come into it with an open mind that these are unique dishes with meat and dairy substitutes, and I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Other perks that I appreciate are that the employees are paid well (and not reliant on tips, since it's included) and they compost! There are also rotating specials--including pesto flatbread--which sound delicious. Street parking (free) shouldn't be a problem, you may just have to walk a block down some residential streets. Also, don't let the long lines deter you--if you are just ordering drinks or dessert, you can order up at the bar. They haven't been open long, so I expect that they will keep improving over time. Let me start by saying I am not a vegan. Now that that's out the way, I enjoyed the food here! Whether you're vegan and not I believe you would enjoy the food. My husband and I had the cauliflower buffalo wings, nachos and the Dirty Secret Burger. You go to the counter and order your food. You get a number, pick a table and your food is brought out. Note, it's a self service restaurant. You go get your water from the counter in the front. We started with the nachos. The nachos were loaded and flavorful. While I enjoyed eating them the nacho cheese didn't in fact taste like nacho cheese I'm accustomed to. I guess that's to be expected as it's vegan cheese but it wouldn't be fair not to say that for those omnivores out there. The cauliflower wings came out next. Yum! I truly enjoy these. The ranch dressing flavor was amazing. Both sauces make it super easy and enjoyable to eat your veggies :-). The Dirty Secret Burger was the finale. So worth it. To have something tastes so meaty and delicious and be vegan was refreshing. It had all the enjoyment of eating a nice grilled burger without the after affects of feeling bloated and heavy. The cheese and burger patties come from Herbivores Butcher. I haven't tried that spot yet but this is definitely going to have me go pick up some items from there. I would definitely recommend this place two vegans and omnivores alike. I like what they are trying to do here at J. Shelby's but the food never caught on with me. I tried three different entrees and they all tasted under seasoned and under whelming. I've tried vegan restaurants in several other cities in the US (Denver and Phoenix) and was a big fan. Unfortunately, Selby's wasn't for me or my vegetarian wife. We were in the area and, because we are both on a WFPB diet, my husband and I decided to have an early Valentine's celebration. We ordered the buffalo cauliflower wings app, he had the black bean burger with potato salad and I had the J Lucy with spicy slaw. We also shared a cheesecake. The food was okay. It was not as good as we had imagined but we may have hyped it up a little bit, too. My husband's black bean burger fell apart as he was eating it. He eventually gave up and had to use a fork to eat his burger. He only ate a few bites of potato salad because he said it just wasn't that great. We both like the cauliflower, though. First things first: I am not a vegan. Nor a vegetarian. Nor a pescetarian. I am not a 'tarian anything. I just eat. That being said, this place was pretty cool. We arrived around 4:30 pm on a Friday and found a spot and ordered immediately - by the time we left around 5:30 there was a long line at the register. Hot Tip: This is an "order at the counter" type of restaurant. There is wine and dessert listed in large format behind said counter so we initially thought that those were the only things you were to order at the counter. Nope. You order everything there. Good to know. We ordered a bottle of wine, The Dirty Secret w/fries, and the Street Tacos. The Dirty Secret: 2.5/5 - I really wanted to love this but there was a flavor within the patty or sauce that just was not jiving with my taste buds. Maybe it was thyme? or ginger? Something was totally distracting me and it just didn't belong in something that was trying to be a burger. I could only get down half - I shoved those fries down my throat though. Those were very good. Street Tacos (friend): She LOVED them and when I got to try a bite I did too! The chorizo was delicious and the flavors were on point. I was jealous. I wanted to trade. lol I debated giving them 3 stars instead of 4 but I rounded up because I really do think this place probably has other REALLY good things and I just didn't get lucky with the burger. My SO and I are both vegans so we have been eagerly awaiting the opening of J.Selby's. We used to live just a couple blocks away from J. Selby's but moved to NE Minneapolis before the opening. They seem to have throught out the logistics of keeping the line moving. The general feel of J. Selby's is similar to a Panera in that it's fast casual but still feels a little classy. Anyone that says "vegan food is boring" needs to eat at J. Selby's. This place is the missing link to convert most people. If you are looking for healthy food, this is not the place for you. It's definitely vegan junk food (for the most part) but it's o so glorious junk food. The staff is amazing, the prices are very reasonable, and the food is out of this world. When we arrived they let us know they were out of a few items (expected for an opening week) so we had to make some decisions on the fly. I got the Dirty Secret w/ Spicy Coleslaw. The Dirty Secret was perfectly saucy and the Herbivorous Butcher patties were scarily close to the real thing. It is quite messy so don't fight that, just go with it. The Spicy Coleslaw was pretty good but nothing special I'd say. My SO got the BBQ Beaf w/ fries. The BBQ Beaf had great flavor but "shredded" is probably not the best word to describe the texture. I'd say "cubbed" beaf bits instead. I think my burger was better though and she agreed! The fries were ok, nothing special. For dessert we got a brownie and Mint SoyClone. The Mint SoyClone was exactly like a blizzard and hit the sweet spot just right. But the brownie...o the brownie. I have no idea what they did to make the brownie but it was EASILY the best brownie I have ever had and maybe the best dessert I have ever had. YOU HAVE TO GET THE BROWNIE! J. The Solo Burger was delicious. I am very picky with texture and the only flaw was the cheese was a bit weird... not cheesy texture, more just soggy. Other than that, I loved it. 4.5 stars on that. However, my mom got the falafel dish and it was totally dilute of flavor, even the spicy slaw was bland. So we headed to Selby's last Saturday for lunch. We have heard some good things about this place from our St Paul friends but what we were not told were the looong lines. The line waiting to get inside was standing on the road. So we skipped the place for lunch and went for dinner :) The place is a herbivore dream. I have never had buffalo wings ( I am a vegetarian), so when I saw the vegan version I almost jumped in excitement! The cauliflower Buffalo wings were delicious, with the right amount of zing from the Buffalo sauce. The portion size was generous. If you have a small appetite like me, an appetizer, half an entree will fill you up :D We also ordered the Dirty secret and Quesadilla. We ordered the Dirty secret becasue of the thumbs up it got on Yelp reviews, but personally I didn't care for it much. It was just okay I thought, especially the patty. I liked the Quesadilla better. The vegan sour cream was really really good. I honestly don't care much for the dairy sour cream. I would have loved to try their brownie but I was full and also the service was SLOW. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!! That's how I felt when I heard they were opening. I have been craving a vegan restaurant since eating at Chicago Diner. I knew I wanted to try them out opening week so I drove on over for a late lunch. The vibe is bright and cheerful. You can enter on Victoria or Selby and there's usually plenty of street parking available. When you enter look for the big 'order here' sign. It's for food and drink in case the additional signage throws you off. Their menu is still shifting so I recommend asking if any thing has changed before you order. I decided on the Beet burger, Oreo soyclone and a side salad. Side salad Crisp and fresh greens with tasty heirloom tomatoes, croutons and a lemon tahini sauce which came on the side. The salad was great but the tahini sauce made it amazing. I gladly would have eaten an entire cup of it! Beet burger The beet burger has lentils, beers, raisin and a pickle on top sigh iceberg lettuce. The combination of the lettuce and a bun that was too much bread made this item my least favorite. I did put some of the leftover tahini sauce on it but has to finish the burger without the top bun. Oreo soyclone Ahhhhhh!!! First off, I'm lactose intolerant but I love ice cream in the summer. It causes problems. So I LOVE it when I can have soy based shakes. You have a variety of options to choose from including whether you want a vanilla or chocolate base. It's the perfect amount of soycream and they give you a nice long spoon to get everything at the bottom. Overall, I'm impressed and happy with J.Selby's. Here's something you probably didn't know, my wife's Vegan! Ok, you all probably knew that, so what. My review is still valid. Came to J. Selby's opening week, as we usually do with every new Vegan spot in the cities. Obviously, opening week for every new restaurant is kind of rough, so we needed to visit...*cough, cough*... 4 more times...you know, to try it out. Here's a summary of my experience(s): Firstly, love the vibe of the place. It's bright, but not too bright. Homey, but still modern. First time there, we had the Buffalo Cauliflower, Dirty Secret, a couple Arnold Palmers, and a brownie. Buffalo Cauliflower is genuinely fantastic! The sauce is amazing and the cauliflower itself is cooked to perfection! The fact that the Dirty Secret is so delicious is probably known to half the country by now. Guess the cat's out of the bag...or, the kale's out of the bag...cause, you know...Vegan. The sauce on that burger is so fantastic, my wife has had it at least 15 times now, thankfully to go orders are pretty quick! We have since had their spin on a Blizzard from DQ, and that was also fantastic. Now for my favorite: This item gets it's own paragraph. It won't be a long paragraph, but it'll still be it's own. That Brownie, is the BEST Brownie I have EVER had. It's so rich and moist, with that perfect frosting on the outside and getting an edge piece just tops off the fantasticness of it all to an even greater degree. I know "fantasticness" isn't a word, but once you try the Brownie, you'll be saying it too. This place would 100% have 5 stars were it not for the fact that inconsistencies in the quality of the food are honestly a bit too frequent. Most recently I had the lions mane mushroom bowl with Brussels sprouts, some garlicky lime sauce over rice and it was goood!! Their cauliflower wings are good. The price is a bit high. I lived in Brooklyn and ate at a few different vegan diners that were half the price. I just can't see justifying the prices of items that can be bought at the grocery. HANDS DOWN THE BEST CAULIFLOWER WINGS I'VE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE! The batter was crispy, the sauce was tasty, it was the perfect combination of everything that makes an actual chicken wing taste like a chicken wing. I'm from Los Angeles, and there are many restaurants who do cauliflower wings really well. But nothing, not even close, to this. I am literally thinking about flying to Minnesota for a weekend trip just to eat at J. Selbys twice, maybe four times. But even cooler than that, they have a flavor of the week for the cauliflower wings. I wish I was in town when they did the lemon pepper ones, but maybe next time. I also had the bacon Mac n Cheese which was just as good. They also had some great beer and desserts too. My biggest regret is that I didn't go there sooner, I waited to until the last possible day (idiot). We tried the crispy chicken sandwich without mayo or pickles, the black bean burger with a side of potato salad, and the mozzarella sticks. All were amazing! The mozz sticks cheese tasted very similar to regular cheese (as opposed to other vegan cheeses that have a weird flavor) and the outside crispiness was so good! The sauce was thick and easy to pick up with the mozz sticks. The black bean burger sauce had the slightest hint of sweetness, and the radishes were delicious; and just tasted really great! The chicken sandwich was great. The fries were seasoned perfectly. Their ranch also was amazing. We did have to pay for ketchup and ranch, and the online ordering didn't have an option for Mayo or other things on the side for the sandwich, so we just didn't get them at all. I've been to this place twice and I enjoyed it both times! The first time I had the Caesar salad ($8) and loved it. Second time I got the corn dog with french fries ($8) and a PB Cup Soyclone ($6). The corn dog reminded me a frozen corn dog- in a good way if that makes sense. And the fries dipped in the Soyclone reminded me of Wendy's frosties! Yum. The employees are extremely friendly and helpful. I love the clean interior and there is plenty of street parking around. I would recommend going during non-peak hours! We went at 6:30pm and there was a line out the door and practically zero seating. I really love their message and I enjoy seeing people give vegan food a chance! So many people are afraid of the word "vegan" and "vegetarian" but at J Selby's there's nothing to be afraid of anymore! Even meat lovers will be inspired by their food. May 2019: Stopped in for dinner. The person behind the counter seemed busy and was a little surly. The person who actually brought my food out was much nicer. Got the Mac and cheese with jalapeño corn bread and the miso butter cauliflower wings. The total was about $30. The Mac and cheese was kind of just ok. Not super gooey or flavorful, kind of a strange toppings combo (peas, tomatoes, and bac'un bits). I wouldn't get this again. The jalapeño cornbread was a little dry, but a nice flavor. Not very spicy, more sweet. The cauliflower was crispy and perfect, but the miso butter was not for me. It would be nice if these came with a couple of sauces. This is the place to go if you have a vegan and a carnivore (I'm the latter). The food is all vegan, but several dishes are well disguised. I get the buffalo wings (cauliflower) and the spicy peanut bowl (or whatever they call it now), my wife varies her selections. It's so good we've been back several times. Arrived around 5pm on a Monday and there was hardly a line. They don't have a parking lot, but street parking wasn't too crowded (it's not a terribly busy area, mostly residential). I ordered The Philly while my wife ordered the J. Lucy. Turnaround time on the food was pretty good. Taste-wise, it can't get much better: my Philly was hot, cheezy, and well-seasoned with a nice smattering of sauteed onion and green bell pepper. The seitan "steak" tasted excellent; similar to what I recall a cheesesteak tasting like*. For the side, I got tater tots, which were crispy and also seasoned well. My wife's J. Lucy and side-salad were both delicious too: the patty on the J. Lucy was flavorful and cheeze oozed out of it with the first couple bites, while the balsamic vinaigrette with the side-salad was excellent. For dessert or drinks, one need not return to the main counter (which had a sizeable line by the time we finished dinner) but instead order from the side counter. We decided to get a Soyclone, which I suppose is their soy-based answer to a McFlurry. The flavor of the week was, I think, called "Peanut Butter Lover", which sounded perfect to us. I ordered one with chocolate as the base "ice cream" flavor (as with soft serve, one can choose vanilla, chocolate, or twist). Luckily, it was still happy hour so we got $2 off the Soyclone. The first few bites were oddly a bit bland, but, as we ate, it grew on us. The chocolate and peanut butter complimented each other well, but we wished there had been a bit more peanut butter (there were a lot of chocolate chips). Still, it was quite good. All in all, with friendly staff and good food, it was a great experience and we plan to return to try out their other options in particular the mozzarella sticks. *For reference, my primary experience with cheesesteaks were through Steak Escape or the frozen ones from Costco. We are vegans who love restaurants. We visited J Selbys in early September while in St. Paul. A few things stood out. First-- the safety was fantastic. Everything was curbside. And they had a great method with numbered parking spots and a full system in place. Next-- they have so many signs in support of BLM and George Floyd covering the windows. We appreciated that. I visited on Saturday, taking a really good friend out to eat who is Vegetarian. We also took my special lil buddy, her 5 year old granddaughter. Ambiance: A mixed crowd: mixed races, mixture of ages, mix of groups: families, couples, group of friends, etc. The restaurant STAYED packed the entire time i was there, it was like rotating tables, and all I could think was, "Well, the food must be good!" LOL You walk in, no table was left dirty or unclean for long at all, the staff have apparently learned the science of staffing enough ppl to keep the floor clean in order to accommodate the heavy traffic coming in. Once you walk in (fyi the door is on the corner of Selby and not the door towards closer to the alley - I watched many ppl approaching the back door, which is for leaving only- yw lol) There should be menu's upon entrance, while you wait in line to place your order. On the back wall, under the Order Here Sign, are the specials of the day: soups, kimbucha, beers, entrees, etc. You place your order, you're given a number and choose your seat. You cannot choose a seat or table until your entire party has ordered. Once ordered, your given your drinks, or get your own water and sit until your food is brought to you. Service: Everyone was pleasant.. not one issue. Everyone seemed quite focused on their roles. Food: Okay, quite like a previous review I read from a guy named Cody S. #shoutoutoCody FROM HIS 2/27 review, which had me cracking up because he said, "Let's get this out of the way: I'm a meat guy. Love it. Been eating meat since I was young and never looked back. If you checked my fridge right now, the variety and scale of the meat it contains is surprising and slightly nauseating." So basically, I agree with Cody... I am a meat girl.. I am sooooo very carnivorous and i really enjoy meat, but i thoroughly enjoyed my meatless meal at J. Selbys! i would honestly go back just because the food was good and I'm also amazed at how full i got from it. I ordered the buffalo wings: cauliflower guys and had french fries. I'm funny about my fries too, guys. My all time favs are crinkly cut.. guess what? They were crinkly cut! I could have just had that as a meal, but I'm greedy (dangit I'm such a foodie), but i wanted to try the fried rice bowl too, which had great flavor! In all honesty, I'm not really a fan of simple fried rice (i eat it tho.. when i have wings to accompany it), but i did enjoy the rice bowl. I mentioned my friends 5 year old granddaughter and for a little while, she was the only child there, but before we left there were a few more youngins that arrived on the scene. Parents they do have kids menu, so they are accomodating for children. Elyse had chicken nuggets and fries with apple juice. While we never have problems with her eating vegetables, she had no idea she wasn't eating chicken nuggets either. My friend Jennifer truly enjoyed her Mediterranean entree. J Selby's is an absolute masterpiece! The food is so so tasty and everything is completely plant-based! I personally tried their "chorizo" street tacos with tater tots and was absolutely blown away by how great they were! The space itself is bright and inviting and the staff are all super friendly and helpful. I think they're perfectly priced for what they offer and would recommend everyone, vegan or not, to give J Selby's a try. It really is wonderful! read more

OH MY! Everything I've had has been amazing. I've tried the vegan burger, Crunchwrap, tacos, and spicy chicken sandwich. I don't know who is back there seasoning the food, but they are doing a damn good job. I'm all about taste. If it don't taste good I can't eat it. It doesn't matter if it's the best thing for me. I just started eating vegan a few weeks ago and decided to try J. Selby's online ordering pick up for brunch today. I am happy I did! I ordered the seitan bacon sandwich on a biscuit with tomato jam, a pancake and the Icelandic potato burger. All was great, even my kids liked it all and they don't vegan. We shared all the food because we wanted to try it. The seitan bacon was delicious but the biscuit was a little too soft and I think I want to try the English muffin next time when it comes to the sandwich. I will be ordering again.
