Not Good, Actually "TERRIBLE". Save your $$$$$$ and eat elsewhere ! We are an "older" couple. Ordered the Crab Roll with french fries at $37.50. We expected something special, because of the price we ordered one order and told the waitress we would "split" it between us (as we very often do). The order came to us with an extra plate and was placed on the table. We were both shocked at the ridiculously CHEAP portion. We should have refused the order and paid for our ice tea and left, but, we ignorantly stayed, complained to the server, and reluctantly ate the mostly LETTUCE filled roll with a TRACE of what tasted like canned crab meat. We realize NOT EVER to send food back to the kitchen for any reason. We paid our $52.00+ check with AMEX, gave the waitress a $10.00 cash tip and left . THIS RESTAURANT WILL NOT BE VISITED AGAIN IN THE FUTURE ON OUR MANY TRIPS THRU MAINE TO VISIT FAMILY. I feel strongly it is merely a "RIP-OFF tourist trap". Upon leaving we spoke with the manager to let her politely know how we felt. She was defensive even though we told her we wanted nothing in return other than being heard. I takes a concerted effort to serve food this bland. Just yuck. Clams were terrible. Soft tasteless blobs of fried nothingness. Crab cakes were brought in from Kansas, I think. Really bad news. None of this can be attributed to the pandemic. And, quick tip to the management, time to swap out those damp, disgustingly filthy floor coverings. Was visiting the Maine Maritime Museum and a staff member recommended this restaurant to us, however we will not be returning. The service was extremely slow, doubled with the fact that we were a large party (7), it took 2+ hours before we left. The waitress forgot our drinks, sides, and sauces we asked for multiple times. Parties of 2 and 4 were sat after us and left much before us. The pasta was OK, but the overall experience was not worth it. I would not recommend this restaurant unless you're looking for a specialty item on their menu or aren't any in sort of rush. If I could possibly give less than 1 star I would! February 6th at 5:30pm we went in for dinner, waited over an hour with no avail. Our waitress was rude from the very start and she failed to even check on us. One would think give the COVID-19 pandemic restaurants will be trying to at least be aware of customers in their own restaurant. After waiting an hour we had to leave due to other commitments, we let our waitress know and she became angry stating that our meal was almost done however we did not have a choice but to leave. The dinning room only had 4 party's dinning and JR Maxwell apparently could not handle that many people. Maybe Gordon Ramsay should go there and do an episode to help save them. read more

Working for a local hotel, I've sent literally thousands of people to Maxwell's and the only negative comment I've received back was that they were understaffed and diners needed to wait 45 minutes for their food. That happened once. They also said it was worth every minute. I don't buy any of the negative reviews. The owners are gracious and kind. read more

We have been in the city of Bath for a few days now. JR Maxwells is located in the middle of main Street. Located conveniently from our hotel. We decided to dine there because of location and reviews. Tonight was our third night there in a row. I have to say that their wait staff was way less than perfect. We dined everyday around 4 pm. The restaurant was NOT busy at all. One day we were seated pretty close the waitress work station. Most of the staff congregated in this area taking and looking at their cell phones and drinking dunkin coffee while we and other tables waited for service. Another day the hostess sat us at a table where we waited for 15 minutes for service. No one ever acknowledge us. Finally we got up to walk out and a waitress stopped us to apologize for not coming to our table. She stated there was a miscommunication between her and another waitress. We moved to a restaurant next door. Tonight we went back to give them one more shot and it was not pleasant. WE ARE NOT COMPLAINERS AND WE DON'T EXPECT EVERYTHING TO BE PERFECT. WE JUST WANT A NICE EXPERIENCE AND GOOD FOOD. The first night was cold pasta and overcooked chicken. This was their special and was inedible. The second night was horrible no crab crabcakes. The third night was a bland rubbery 8oz steak. I have worked in sales and customer service for 20+ years. Staff must be well trained and the kitchen has to be seasoned. This was a nice enough dinner. The location seemed to be trying to balance feeling like a nice dinner out and a place to grab a drink after work. The clam chowder was good. I was satisfied with the rest of our dinner, but not wowed. The cocktails left something to be desired- very sweet and poorly balanced. Our servers were polite and gracious. The restaurant was relatively empty when we were there. Service was quick, though the timing in the kitchen was off-- we had a bit of a long wait for our food, but then we're rushing to finish our appetizer as our dinners arrived and had to find a place on the table. For the price, you can find better food in town, and for the quality/ type of food, you can find more reasonably priced options. read more

Want a horrible dinner served cold? Then look no further than JR Maxwells where you and your spouse can get broiled scallops, blackened salmon, and mashed potato served cold! Oh! And bonus! When you order asparagus, the kitchen thinks you really meant cold and soggy sauteed zucchini and summer squash! Our poor server, who did an AMAZING job was clearly too busy fixing the kitchen's endless f&ck ups to ask patrons if they wanted refills on both wine and water. I wanted a third glass of malbec, but had to settle for two...oh well. I can buy a bottle of Malbec for $20 and pour 6 servings for guests at a dinner party from the bottle of Malbec. If JR Maxwell's just doesn't need my $24 for three glasses, that's fine! Oh well, I suppose an establishment saving money by hiring third string "chefs" can afford to lose a some bread and cabbage by not keeping the drinks flowing. The staff placed two pitchers of water near our table. Thank God for that! Another member of our party was able to reach for the water and refill our glasses for us. Oh. And avoid the Indian Pudding. It looks and tastes like cream of wheat, could double as cement, and just like the mashed potato, blackened salmon, scallops, and sauteed zucchini and summer squash, is also served cold. I love getting an opportunity to visit this restaurant when I can. For decades it has been such a steady constant here. It perfectly embodies the surf and turf concept and the Maine experience. The other night was no different. I went for the baked stuffed haddock, which was great. The haddock was tender and flaky, just the way I like. Newburg sauce was complementary, but not overbearing, as I enjoy the taste of the haddock too much for that. Crabmeat stuffing added - very fresh tasting and satisfying entree. My friend had sirloin steak topped with a lobster newburg. It looked incredible. Homemade key lime pie to top everything off! It's the most delicious around. Maxwell's is always such a great experience, not only with the food but with the friendly and familiar faces and classic decor. I love it there every time. This was one of the best times. We have had many lunch and dinner's here. McInnis family Christmas Eve's where we take up a large table and laugh, enjoy and spend family time. Where to start, I have enjoyed Chicken Cordon Bleu. We have enjoyed Burgers & fries, I believe my favorite is the Margaret or Georgetown Burger. I have had quiche, I love the beer battered Chicken fingers. The salads and the bread, oh my gosh let us not forget those little loaves of bread. If you want a delicious meal, get yourself down there for lunch or dinner. We ate here June 20, 2021 we waited an hour and a half to be served as did everyone else in the restaurant. My mate had the rack of lamb. It had been breaded and deep fried. When he cut into it it was raw inside. I had the chicken masala it was a large chicken breast, breaded, deep fried and then appeared to have been put in a pan on the stove top with mushrooms and sauce and cooked until the sauce was black and gooey. We got up and left. The waitress was very apologetic. This use to be one of our favorite summer restaurants but we hear ownership recently changed and the wait times and food quality are the usual fare these days. We won't go back. read more

I came here for the "best prime rib in the area". Oye. Not so. How about the "most mediocre prime rib in the area". The sad piece of meat I was served was swimming in a pool of au jus. Seriously, I get a better prime rib at Outback or Longhorn. The mashed potatoes had a couple of pieces of bacon (I think) but tasted like instant 'taters. The vegetable of the day was tasteless mashed butternut squash which seems to be the vegetable of the year rather than the day. The place is cozy and the service was good. My sister, my friend and I went to J. R. Maxwell's for lunch. They weren't very busy, and we were seated immediately. We parked in the back parking lot - off the main street - and had to climb a flight of stairs to get to the restaurant, just so's you know. The waitress was very attentive (filled my small water glass a ton of times) and friendly. And the food was excellent! My friend and I both ordered the side salad - which was dark greens, including baby spinach - plus a tomato wedge, peppers, and shredded carrots, and homemade dressing. I had parmesan peppercorn and my friend had 1000 island. Both were great! My friend and I had the chicken fingers (Chicken MacMaxwell's on the menu). The portion was quite large, and the batter was light and crispy and absolutely wonderful, as was the bbq sauce I asked to have for dipping. The meal came with cole slaw, which we all liked. I ate almost all of mine, which I never do. My sister got the fish and chips, and they were just as good! It was great food, at reasonable prices, and the service was very good. I was rather disappointed . I wasn't aware that this place went under new ownership and I do not think that it's for the better . We split a seafood platter ($38.95)and asked for a side of onion rings . When the dish came it had no French fries and the onion rings were mixed in with the seafood . I figured they made a mistake and just gave us onion rings instead of fries but when the bill came the price of the seafood platter was $45.95 . I asked her why the price difference and she said it was because the onion rings cost more money & I asked her why no fries and she said "because they had to put a double order ofonion rings on the platter" ??? Also, the onion rings were awful and half the order was mangled into the bear batter. I ordered a piece of blueberry pie for desert which was written up on the sign as you enter the restaurant " all out of blueberry pie" so I ordered cheesecake and it wasn't homemade and the strawberries on top were not fresh but from frozen , I didn't look at the price of the cheesecake but it was $10-?!? This is a local eatery for us. The last two visits (pre covid) were disappointing. We waited to be seated in a half empty restaurant and a waitress never came over to us. After 20 minutes we left.
