There are burgers and other food items cooked on the sight, so you can eat while you wander, and it's ideal if you're looking for good, honest food without the stress of supermarket shopping. The stallholders are mostly friendly and keen to chat about their produce, and prices are reasonably compared to health food shops and similar. A great thing to support that adds to the traditional feel of the more independent aspects of Oxford shopping and makes the big town seem more like a local farming market.

My chef friend loves seeing the birds hanging up and tells me it all looks like good quality. I've never plucked up the courage to ask for a cut of something, but luckily they provide ready cut packages, some of which are already prepared with stuffings or glazes, so you can't really go wrong. I think you can really taste the difference between this and supermarket frozen meat, and the price difference isn't too great. The range is impressive as well, although it's hard to predict which of the more unusual meat will be available each time. If you want something in particular, it's worth asking at the counter, as they may be able to get it in for you.

Not all of the meat is organic, but its clearly marked what is and isn't and the guys (and girls) behind the counter will help you out if you have questions. They're open when the covered market is, i.e. mon-sat, but they do extend their opening hours around Christmas. They sell beef, pork, lamb, chicken, mutton, offal, game, suasages and eggs and more. Often they have game (birds or mammals) hanging outside the shop. At Christmas this place is understandably heaving, especially on Christmas Eve or christmas-order collection day, but it feels very festive while you're waiting as they have rows and rows of turkeys hanging up, I even saw a boar hanging outside once! The staff are super-friendly and knowledgable, like a butchers' is supposed to be. The meat is top-quality, traceable and can suit a variety of budgets. If you have a recipe but are not sure what cut you need, or if they've run out of what you needed they can advise you on what is a good substitute too. They can prep your meat for you too if you ask. We also buy organic eggs there too, they're a reasonable price for a really good egg - about £3.50/dozen as I recall.

He was an…read morehonest man and generally his stock was fresh, but sadly, as with so many small enterprises of this nature, he was affected by the arrival of a supermarket: their fish was cheaper and, frankly, fresher than his, so he closed down. I am all in favour of an excellent small 'monger' holding out against the big stores, but closure in the face of something far better (and safer) ought also to be the fate of Alcocks: their meat is less fresh than I can buy down the street, and more expensive; their vegetables are well past their sell-by date; but more than that, the general sense is one of false bonhomie masking an unpleasant mix of unreconstructed male chauvinism, dishonest grasping and surliness. The premises would make a very nice coffee shop, with decent homemade scones and people who actually care about customer service. Time for change...

Great if you come from there and miss your food, but also really fun if you're bored of the usual pub grub, Chinese takeaway or Italian pizza. I've never been to Russia, but I have been to Eastern Europe, where the food can be really stunning. (It can also be really weird, but I guess that's a matter of taste!). They have some unusual meat and pickles, some love it or hate it cake, and, of course, lethal Russian vodkas! The prices are reasonable, and it's not like you can get hold of these things easily elsewhere. The staff are knowledgeable in that they're from that area of the world, but this does mean some of them have rather strong accents! Great for people who mainly travel to try different food - now you can spend all your flight/accommodation money just on the food in the comfort of your own town!

An eagerly anticipated recent addition to Headington, replacing the old Somerfield supermarket…read more Inside it hasn't changed a lot and it's not a huge store but there's a selection of the usual Waitrose goodies including fish and meat counters as well as a bakery. There's a public carpark right next door (rumour has it that Waitrose tried hard to buy some of the carpark from the council but were refused) and most of the Headigton buses stop fairly nearby.
